241  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Ram OS issues on: March 21, 2016, 05:47:42 am
Hi further to previous post. I have put Benchmark DAC driver file in the installs file to use with other OS's.

I have managed to get W10565 working in Ram and cured above filter problem by unticking the "Is Phasure NOS1" Box. Yeah!!!! Trap for young players.

But in going back to W10586 and unticking NOS box, it has not worked but it will play if I reduce upsampling to 16/44. Filter problem seems stuck even with rebooting in normal OS and back again.

Now after resetting boot menu 10586 from RAM back to Base it always wants to reboot back to Ram. I can change this at bootup if I'm quick at startup screen.

Hi Peter,
Disconnected other OS's and rebooted and the boot screen appeared with everything on it. I rebooted to 10586 Base and checked settings and that my DAC was connected then rebooted into Min OS.

Then rebooted into 10586 Ram memory and this worked with all now in RAM.

When I push play it won't start and this comes up:

Filter 5 - can not start because of filter sampling rate mismatch.

I have them set to 14-1-1-1 as per normal. Looks like I have broken something.

Sorry for trouble, I didn't read anywhere not to have any other OS's connected. I've always had 2, 1 for xxhighend and one for video, spotify etc.

I will set up other OS's to try this evening.

Can I put my Benchmark driver in the installs folder on the Ram drive? This will save me downloading for every OS.

Yes two other OS's I will disconnect them. Then will start again.
Booting from the RAM OS disk is only possible using W10- 10586.0 Memory in the boot menu. I was unable to load this in the Boot menu. But I will try this after disconnecting other OS's.

To load this it needs to point at the 10586 VHD file in the C:\ drive then apply with the tick box in RAM. Is this right?

244  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Ram OS issues on: March 20, 2016, 01:34:50 am
Hi Peter,
I mounted Ram HD and booted into 10565 no problems stopped Defender and No updates. Then opened XXhighend and then loaded Base 10586.0 into boot menu. Boot menu had nothing in it. I then opened 10586.0 and loaded drivers. I'm only using 10586 for now.

All go and I tried to play a track in normal OS but got a message Filter 5 can not start. Should I be able to start XXhighend in this mode?

I'm also unable to load W10- 10586.0 RAM Memory into Boot menu. What is the procedure for this? Should I have done this when I created the Base?

Do I have to create Drive X and where would I do this?

I presume I would set all the settings required in XXhighend(my DAC and playback settings) then put into Min OS before loading into Ram.

245  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: Clairixa USB-cable - Listening impressions on: March 18, 2016, 04:39:48 am
Hi all just received my short Clairixa for Intona connection to USB card along with Ram OS.

Well I disconnected my trusty Benchmark USB cable and connected the short Clairixa.

Gosh couldn't believe my ears what an improvement in sound quality just with this short cable. I already have the standard Clairixa from the Intona to DAC.

Some people suggest different USB cables shouldn't make any difference to the sound!!!!!

The Clairixa is well worth the money if you havn't got one get one, or two if you have the Intona. You won't regret it.

Ram OS for Saturday job.

Thanks Peter I will play with your suggestion. I have also read your original guide on SFS in Getting started under sound quality related. I was wondering if you can add more to this now?

Peter,

I have the following SFS issues but live with it while investigating more closely. This is all in unattended min OS.

I prefer sound at .1 SFS for most 16/44 rips(Wave files) and downloads and a few 24/96/192 tracks and these play full albums with no problems.

Some particularly 16/44 cd rips(Wave files) will only play 1 track or 2, then stop dead. I have to stop play CTRL Alt X to rectify. They will play at .5 SFS as do some 24/96/192(these have been run through Saracon).

Most 24/44/96/192 downloads(mostly wave files) or rips will only play at 1.0 SFS or higher.

If I restart at next track it will only play that track then stop. At this point I'm forced to change the SFS higher.

I havn't noticed clicks or skipping tracks.

I have stopped using Saracon. Most recent downloads are 16/44 Flac and so far good at .1SFS.

I'm wondering if my early CD rips are an issue, with time I will re rip them using DB poweramp.

As for Hires downloads they are a mixed bag, and mine are mostly from HD tracks where some play at .1 or .5 or 1. or higher.

Whether my computer is not powerful enough or what in order to run low SFS .1 for all tracks and albums remains to be solved.

248  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: NOS1a (v1.0.4b) : Fifo errors on: January 25, 2016, 01:13:03 am
Yes I do use the Molex. Its using the standard computer lead from a separate power output terminal on main power supply. Only powers the Silverstone.

Since upgrading Silverstone software no problems. I have not changed USB leads around yet on the Intona. Certainly don't have ticks/clicks but then my DAC is probably not up to it.

In regards to SFS I'm running .5 on 16/44 but have to increase to 1 for some 24/96 and 192 files. These stop playing after two tracks off an album.

Hi I woke up this morning and no sound whatsoever. I have just received the Intona and blamed that initially.

The software for the Silverstone was not working.

I downloaded the latest W8 drivers from the Silverstone Web site and all working again. I installed both the firmware and driver and restarted, it all worked. Don't use the driver from the install disk its a problem I believe for W10 although it did work but stopped so not sure what happened.

Here is the Silverstone ECO4-P driver link under downloads for anyone: http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=364

This interesting piece from The Telegraph UK:

Quote
The future of the music industry

David Bowie gives the New York Times a prediction about the industry in 2012:

"Music itself is going to become like running water or electricity. So it’s like, just take advantage of these last few years because none of this is ever going to happen again.

"You’d better be prepared for doing a lot of touring because that’s really the only unique situation that’s going to be left. It’s terribly exciting. But on the other hand it doesn’t matter if you think it’s exciting or not; it’s what’s going to happen."

Yes sad day. I discovered him through Aladdin Sane but loved his Berlin albums.

Saw him live in 1978 and was one of the best concerts I've ever attended. Superb production and sound. Was never filmed but sound track was recorded. Best live production was his Glass Spider tour which I never saw but have the DVD(hard to find these days).

Downloaded Blackstar from HD tracks yesterday 24/96 and it is a fitting last album.

252  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Why I havn't bought a NOS DAC leading to an XXhighend AV idea on: January 10, 2016, 12:35:53 am
I thought I would blog this.

I do appreciate that the NOS dac is all everyone says. Its excellent!!

I have not bought one yet for the following reasons:

1. Don't have a dedicated listening room just for audio.

2. I believe one should live with his system and use it everyday so this means its in the main living area. Sometimes to the annoyance of others who don't always like your choice(music) but as we may not like theirs we have to live with it.

3.  I use to play drums many years ago with live instruments so have always strived to repeat this in my lounge. Further to this my most favourite way to enjoy music is watching and listening to live performances(PCM stereo) via an Optoma projector and Cambridge 751 BR player.

4. In order to accommodate my AV with XXhighend computer I bought the Benchmark DAC2 for switching and volume control.
I do recognise that the Benchmark is not perfect and is limited by only allowing 24bit input plus only outputting 192 and probably other issues.

Solution:

If somehow I could run the AV through XXhighend, then the NOS would be an excellent idea. I have ripped my best BR/DVD concerts already to a hard drive.

I realise this is adding more connections and reducing the sound quality somewhat but I feel the overall AV experience is worth it. I could disconnect all AV wiring to enhance dedicated Audio listening.

Currently XXhighend sound easily beats my best sound from my Cambridge 751 player(24/192). I'm not upgrading my Cambridge to the latest Oppo or whatever as I think its the end of the road for software on disks. I have tried JRiver for AV but its Audio is not as good as XXhighend.

Just more work for you Peter but I think its worth mentioning as an alternative.

Thanks for the replies.

I've been holidaying in Sunburn't Australia with no HiFi for 4 weeks. They say the average HiFi in Australia is a bed side clock, I think its true. Hard to find a dedicated Hifi shop even in the big cities.

Mani I've ordered the Intona today I did think it was probably the way to go.

Peter my original question re new setup of 10586 is do I follow the same procedure as 10074 as per your instructions?

I will go the OS ram route shortly and will need the short Clarixa.

I note on CA forum that one person who bought Intona said it was better sounding with cheap cables versus his Lightspeed $$$$ with no Intona.

I'm changing to this version Peter. Do I need to follow the same setup as 10074?

Xxh 2.04 is a stepup from 2.03a quite surprising in 10074.

Which is better upgrading to W10 OS from ram or Intona? Can't do both financially and I can't decide which to do first.

255  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Leonard Cohen Old Ideas Hires download issues? on: December 08, 2015, 10:10:30 pm
I have the CD 16/44 and ripped to Wave file.

When the version 24/44 appeared I recently downloaded(flac) from 7 Digital UK. Upon playback it only played 4 tracks then XXhighend stopped.
This was after conversion to Wave by Saracon. I repeated this process and no luck still stopped playing.

I downloaded from HD downloads the same version 24/44 in wave. Play back was perfect for the whole album in XXhighend.

Not only this, but on comparing all 3 versions "Amen" in attended, the HD download version was better in all aspects, leaving the 7Digital version in second place.

I will try to get someone to analyse these two downloads.

All I can say is all downloads(Hi Res especially) are not equal and can have issues. One could jump to the conclusion that playback software is to blame when in fact something odd is in the download files.

This on top off so called hires rip off's like albums just being upsampled and sold as hi res issues.

I have had problems with some HD downloads that will only playback fully after being run through Saracon from original wave download.

In my view the HiRes(24/44) Leonard Cohen "Old Ideas" is well worth getting from HD tracks and easily better than the ripped CD.
