347  Ultimate Audio Playback / Cables (Community induced) / Re: Cables with BNC Connectors/Adapters Are Generating A Superoir SQ on: September 23, 2014, 01:12:31 am
In researching these cables you need to be careful of the makeup off the live conductor.

RG 142 is copper coated steel
RG 213 is stranded copper
RG 214 is stranded silver coated copper
RG 223 is single strand silver coated copper

Radio spares UK have info on all these.

All these cables should sound different.

I can't help but be sceptical of BNC claims to date especially as an interconnect. I mean Nordost are over priced but they have developed their cables backed with research. Perhaps they need to try the BNC plug approach.

I did always run 75 ohm BNC from my CD transport to DAC for many years and it certainly was an improvement over RCA. Interestingly we did try running coax as interconnect but without the BNC plugs using RCA. These were coarse sounding compared to better quality conductor cables.

Quality of conductors is paramount in my book which definitely means steel should be avoided. Its primarily used to strengthen cables in harsh conditions and is a cheap conductor.

I am intrigued and may try the RG223. Has anyone compared 75 ohm to 50 ohm?

348  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Upsampling Internet Radio ? on: May 14, 2014, 04:53:41 am
Further to this how can I run online radio or spotify through XXhighend to upsample the sound?
349  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Re: Sony Blu Ray player - never again!!! on: April 01, 2014, 06:19:37 am
The Cambridge 752 or Oppo 105 only way to go. Both made in the same factory. I have a Cambridge 751 and sonically it was ahead of the 95 Oppo but now both new models probably similiar. If you don't use the 7.1 outputs get the cheaper models down ie: Cambridge 751, 651 or Oppo 95, 103 and use HDMI as I do below.

I run a Kanex HDMI converter to hear 24/96/192 through my Benchmark DAC2 for live BR concerts, SACD and DVDA. Much better sound than from the onboard DAC's. The digital out will not do 24/96 from BR's. This converter does not need to be connected to a monitor to work. I leave it set on 5.1. Would be interesting if this worked into the NOS but I guess the NOS needs xxhighend to work.

I mostly use this setup for live concerts which are some of my favourite sounds. I tend to run movies off USB and this feature is great on these players. Since the advent of xxhighend I've gone back to stereo and home theatre lies redundant. I was ever hopeful that surround music would get bigger but still early days. I've completely removed the centre speaker resulting in a much better stereo sound.
350  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Alt-X issue in Unattended on: March 22, 2014, 04:10:18 am
I have trouble getting Alt X to bring XXhighend back from unattended. I have to either wait till all the songs finish and then it naturally comes back or hit Alt - S which most of the time stops music playing, then Alt - x and brings it back to attended. Sometimes neither Alt x or alt s work, the computer restarts itself with errors. XXhighend says it can't support straight contiguous and reverts to mixed and xxhighend reverts to Win 32. Restarting computer fixes this and then resetting xxhighend. I havn't said anything because I believed what I run is way underpowered by all accounts now and probably the reason. This does seem to happen after a fresh boot. After 2 or 3 new different music tracks playing it does work, but only if music is stopped by alt s then alt x. This doesn't worry me too much as I have got around the issue but just in case it is a software error for your info Peter.

One presumes Peter has increased the efficiency of his system albeit his speakers by 3db by a mod. Always a good thing to do.

I would disagree with you on Ram disk, it made a noticeable difference on playback in W7 and I continue to use.
I use 4g for ram disk playback due to running some 24/192 music files.

I don't use ram for XXhigh as not enough ram. But I would love to. I only have 8g total. You need at least 12g of ram to make this work well for both.

I'm limited by my notebook size can't put more ram in.

Gosh with the multitude of changes I think everyone needs to slow down a little.

I have yet to try W8 and still happy with W7. This sound is still well ahead of any opposition I've heard.

But its got to the point that the latest W7 settings are way beyond my computer anyway.

What with 12 cores and beyond its getting into Star Wars land.

We all recognise that the evolution must go forward but we need time to listen to settings and one would hope MUSIC.

Don't let the technology over ride the Music.
354  Ultimate Audio Playback / Phasure NOS1 DAC / Re: DSD for XXHE & NOS 1 on: January 04, 2014, 01:06:40 am
Certainly can but to get to this point a lot of work to be done at all points from recording to playback.

355  Ultimate Audio Playback / Phasure NOS1 DAC / Re: DSD for XXHE & NOS 1 on: January 03, 2014, 10:30:29 pm
I agree with Peter I've also, yet to see the merits of DSD. Conversion is a major problem and especially in the studio in order to work with the music file before we even get to hear it.

There is a lot of discussion on this subject currently in "The Computer Audiophile": http://www.computeraudiophile.com/f8-general-forum/world%92s-first-valid-comparison-pulse-code-modulation-versus-direct-stream-digital-18636/

Also on Mark Waldrep's(Audio engineer, University lecturer) site here: http://www.realhd-audio.com/?cat=45

I have lots off SACD's which if I could rip them would be nice to play them off my computer. Can't be bothered with the Playstation 3 rip method even if I could find one.

At this point in time with all that Peter's up to its not a priority I believe. I mean I don't know where he finds the time for the half of what he achieves with PCM and Windows let alone the NOS 1 and his own hifi upgrades(new speakers last year), hifi shows.

My limited experience with DSD to PCM listening from a post at CA:

Quote
I down loaded all three tracks plus Foobar and DSD add on's. Got all installed and listened. First I found the DSD tracks to be louder than the PCM. Closer listening the DSD tracks appear to be more forward and open sounding compared to PCM(not sure whether loudness contributed to this). I could not get Foobar to output 24/192 only 24/96.

Upon returning to my preferred XXhighend software which only plays PCM the PCM tracks were output at 24/192 as downloaded and easily beat all the sounds from Foobar DSD and PCM. If XXhighend adds DSD I can then do a better comparison.

Perhaps a dedicated computer audio player for DSD needs to be developed. XXhighend has been dedicated to PCM.

The Benchmark DAC2 easily played back both DSD 64 and PCM files. Overall inconclusive for me, individual setups will determine final result.

I don't have a problem using vinyl as source for these recordings but how could I ever forget those scatches and clicks no matter how minor they are. I for one will never go back to vinyl.

356  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: 1.86a For W8 only? on: January 03, 2014, 04:40:57 am
Definitely worth running with W7 a noticeable improvement in sound quality. Check my signature, I'm limited by using a laptop which has only 2 cores. I've found Peters W8 settings to also work with W7. Havn't tried changing settings yet still getting use to the sound.

Happy and prosperous New Year to you Peter and all your followers.

Thanks for the great New Years present better than any other I've received this Christmas.

Its going to be another interesting year judging by the latest XXhighend version which I've got working(easily this time) but not optimised and is definitely another large sound improvement.

Yes I've been ripping the last of my CD's the not so popular ones and whoa they do sound good again. Mine are new wave and ambient from the 80's and 90's.

Another big year but looking forward to next!!!!!!!! XXhighend 10 and beyond????

Thanks for your huge efforts in digital audio land Peter.
359  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Re: Miraculous speakers if you are in a budget on: December 16, 2013, 08:25:14 pm
The Behringer active monitors are excellent value. I've just sold some with an active sub which was my kids system. It survived parties and some of the most terrible music available today!!!!

There is a lot in favour of going down the active speaker route. Most pro studios use active monitors. The amplifiers are made to match the driver and are more efficient. You can buy excellent quality at a moderate price not the inflated so called "Hi-End" pricing. They are built to a specification standard something a lot of Hi-fi manufacturers don't use or care about.

If you go to surround speaker setup you can buy 5 speakers all the same.

Certainly in the future I would consider this option if I was upgrading or down. Check the Finish Genelecs out for example.

The source is critical and certainly helps when feeding lesser products.
360  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Windows 8.1 on: November 19, 2013, 10:10:26 am
Peter Don't beat yourself up.

Perhaps give it a break, I know you will crack it as you did crack W8. Just going to take you longer.

I was heading for W8 and guess will wait now with baited breath for the cure to W8.1.

I'm still happy with W7 but not having heard W8 don't pine for it.
