121  Ultimate Audio Playback / Music Storage and convenient playback / Re: Most convenient Storage Structure ? on: August 01, 2007, 11:12:11 am
This all seems too simple - I must be missing something?

On my new hard drive I have created a system based on folders, with 5 layers of depth

Top layer is genres such as:
  • Country
    Pop
    Classics
    Irish
    Jazz
    etc

Second layer is:
  • Solo male
    Solo female
    Group male
    Croup female
    Group mixed

Third layer is performers name (eg under Country - solo female);
  • Reba McEntire
    Gretchen Wilson
    Shania Twain
    Alison Krauss
    etc

Fourth layer is Album tiltles for each selected artist.

Fifth layer is the album itself from EAC with track numbers, titles, lengths, and album artwork.

I can get to any album or track with 5 clicks of the mouse thankyou

I can add that the blue lights would match the CrazyA perfectly ... (might you get the CrazyA ...)

Well, it is in my peripheral vision, but I am so happy with my EAR 861 power amp that I cant believe it would be so much better as to warrant a change.
One virtue I accept is being able to leave it on all day. At the moment having valves tends to make the Hi-Fi just for 'special' listening, and most valves take about 30 minutes to come on song.
So the Crazy A would not be an instant purchase - I would need to hear it to be persuaded. Unfortunately I checked with Bert, and there is not one in the UK yet.  unhappy

One further remark : The backup feature you describe as "Raid" will be about automatically duplicating the one disk to the other. This means that if you by accident delete a couple of folders (or all), they are gone on the "backup" as well, instantly ... yes

Raid (whatever type) really is not for backup, but for continuous uptime (like with drive failure), which is something different.
So be careful !

Yes I did take note of your earlier comments. I do like the automatic way it does back up (saves me a job) but I agree that care is of the essence.  very happy very happy

I settled on this to get me started  -  the Freecom Data Tank 1TB

This is something of a bargain at present, with some free promotional vouchers I had, and free P&P it came in at £211.

What pursuaded me?
1. Price
2. Probably the simplest and prettiest box around, which will be OK on view with the sound system
3. Small and portable, for regularly, but temporarily moving to my desk top Internet system for loading music, track titles and artwork using EAC.
4. Quiet, and hopefully reliable - my wife has had a smaller Freecom external hard drive for some time.
5. Capability for automatic back up on its two internal drives (RAID)
6. USB or Firewire 800

I would second what Gerner says, that I will probably only store those Albums that I enjoy listening to on the Hi-Fi. Others will stay on CD for the car etc.

So now to finalise the indexing of folders Grin Grin

I also play from a LT and have choosen two of these fellows:

http://www.freecom.com/ecproduct_detail.asp?ID=3098&CatID=&sCatID=

As far as I know they come up to max 1 T-byte only.

But they are quality built and completely noiseless. Price were around 500 EURO/each.

Gerner

Hi Gerner.
Those Freecom DataTanks look pretty attractive and would not look out of place alongside the Hi-Fi. By comparison the Buffalo kit looks a bit utilitarian (albeit a bit cheaper).
One reviewer of the DataTank said it was not ready for Vista yet, but this may well have been an old review.
Are you running yours with Vista?

PS
Dont forget to put your system on your profile signature Wink

If I might be so bold, I think your 2 issues so far have been "user orientated" (don't hit me!) The problems are neither XX or OS related.

Thanks Jack, said with maximum diplomacy ok ok. What you really mean is, I shot myself in the foot - at least twice Happy Happy

Being an analytical scientist by trade I tend always to move too fast and too deep into this sort of thing without the knowledge to support it.

It is a rapid learning curve, but also a slipperty one.  fool

If they are not in one box (hence one USB connection), it's my guess that you can't "span" them into one volume. But maybe others know better ?
And indeed, when you'd end up with 4 drives, that would be very inconvenient.

Btw, boxes for two drives exist for sure, and 2x 500GB would be a good price/value.
2x 1TB (which also exists since 6 weeks or wo) would be more "infinite" though ...

OK, thats the way I was thinking good

Just trying to get my head around this storage and retrieval lark

Initially lets forget the back up drives, and concentrate on USB2 drives

So, if I get one very large (say 1TB) device presumably this will have a title such as drive f and can be readily searched, providing I have my albums well indexed.

If I was to buy say 4 x250GB drives, I guess I would then need a hub to connect them all. Are they then called say drives f, g, h, and i, and therefore more of a hunt is required to find specific albums?

Cheers Chris

Emmmmmmm

This takes me way out of my depth with my existing computing knowledge unhappy

Can I ask a few direct questions?

1. Am I right in saying this is not an XXHighend issue, but more about how Vista sorts out the storage of files?

2. I am planning to load all my CDs onto a dedicated USB external hard drive connected, during just this process, to an XP computer on the internet (for getting track names and album art). Will this get around any Vista storage issues.

3. If this is not an XXHighend issue will you still be striving to resolve it (Couldn't blame you if you didn't Grin)

4. What should dir *.wav have in it. Is it a permanent store or should it renew (say) each time you reboot?
129  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Can't drag files from Explorer onto Playlist area on: July 24, 2007, 11:50:28 pm
Chris
Is it possible that you are using XX's library button & trying to drag from there?
Jack

Oh dear, thats exactly what I was trying to do oops - thought it was just another window to drag and drop from blush2 blush2.

Well thats sorted that problem out - cheers clapping

Hi Peter

Had a look at this today.

I tried a few times (without success) to drag and drop several recognisable tracks into XX

I then went straight to opening a DOS box and looked for those tracks.

There were plenty of tracks listed but all had yesterdays date when I moved quite a few CDs onto the hard drive.

There were no tracks with todays dates to show the drag and drop.

Cheers Chris

YES Grin Grin

Dumped the last picture and captured another one which definitely had the file extension '.jpg'.

All is well now.

Thanks to you all for you help good

Files look just like yours - my file is called "folder".

If I click on properties it shows it to be a jpeg 124x124 pixels. What is strange is if I double click on it, it says 'file cannot be opened'.
This is strange cause the picture shows on the front of the folder.

I love a bit of straw clutching, but no luck I'm afraid.

I hovered with music files for over a minute, but still no entry dntknw.

Regarding file size, I had given this no thought at all, but mine turns out to be a paltry 3.15Kb.

134  Ultimate Audio Playback / Music Storage and convenient playback / Re: How do you get album pictures into the XX player on: July 23, 2007, 07:04:05 pm
Chris
This should happen automatically, Windows defaults to hiding known file extentions(.jpg for example). So it already knows that it is a .jpg file, just call your coverart 'folder' without the .jpg (Windows is seeing folder.jpg.jpg). Then when you load up a track from that location you will see the picture too! I hope that's clear.
Jack

Thanks for the suggestion Jack. Nothing happens with or without the .jpg extension unhappy

It's possible this is related to another issue that was left on the back burner, whereby I cant drag and drop files into XXHighend.

Nearly there with this Wink

I have album tracks stored in a folder together with the album cover stored as folder.jpg.

Now, how do I get the picture into XXhighend.

I can see under settings that there is a box labelled picture folder containing "folder.jpg" - should I be doing something with this.

Cheers Chris
