Chris,

All is relative; When you use "about nothing" from the PC, like XXHighEnd using in the areas of 0,1% CPU and together with other services, say, 3 %, you'll gain 3% on eliminating the services. This, while the fans start spinning up at maybe 30% ...

Good point Peter, and one very well made. Grin Grin

But fans won't spin slower because of the minimalistic use of things already (hence, taking things away will not do anything according to heat).

OK Peter, must be my simplistic approach to things. I thought if a computer wasn't doing anything (aside from being turned on Wink), then its needs no additional power and you get no additional heat, so the fan will be on less. dntknw

I am using the standard low power settings (screen dim etc) but this makes little difference in terms of how often the fan is on unhappy

But Gerard ... although I can't (and won't) prevent you from doing those things yourself, this is not exactly the idea;
What *is* the idea, is that all happens in a controlled fashion. Example :

When someone is bothered by harddisk acces during playback (or thinks he/she is), I could shutdown the "service" which provides harddisk access. A next thing (but earlier) would be shutting down everything which urges for harddisk access, otherwise you'd get errors. And so on. Now, when the *audio* system needs the harddisk (end of track etc.) all has to be started up again, and the software can easily do that (at the appriopriate moment).

Note that this is just an example, and a not much realistic one. But it explains how far things could go, if done in a controlled fashion;
You yourself never could shutdown the service that realizes harddisk access. You'd get errors all over the place. So, the "how far things could go" is the key here. By means of software control it could go way far ...

Peter, I think there are two aspects to this that could be addressed.

1. Degradation of SQ when the computer uses processes that do not need to run if its a dedicated machine - but remember ( I guess) that some of these processes may be needed to go online to download updates or CD art.

2. Noisy fans or hard drives in the PC or associated off-board storage. Many of us will have the PC at hand by the listening chair so this noise becomes quite invasive. I guess turning off unwanted processes will reduce the PC usage and hence heat, but as inferred above it would be really nice for the software to turn off the hard drives until needed. The fan on my laptop is on regularly but the external hard drive seems to be motoring away at random times throughout the music tracks.

Sorted Peter good

Well my initial impressions (Q1 3 inverted) are that XXHighEnd has moved up yet another gear.

I put on one of my standard test tracks Eva Cassidy-Over The Rainbow which I've heard so often its difficult to get really excited over.

There was strumming of the guitar with notes so perfectly formed it was difficult to believe and sent shivers down my spine. The money note was hit with more impact and precision than I ever remember, and most importantly I found myself emotionally involved with the song for the first time in a long while. If I wasn't such a big strong bloke I would confess to a tear in the eye. Now where did that come from. good good good good good

Try the album Poems of Thunder by Yim Hok-Man.

This is a fantastic, well recorded album, but the first track in particular 'Poem of Chinese Drum' has a big drum that makes you fear for the safety of your house. If you want to know if your base speakers stop and start well or if your room booms, then give this a shot. My BD15s can through with flying colours.

Hi Peter

I did a 12 hour listening session yesterday using Version k, Q1 slider at 3. XX performed faultlessly aside from 2 minor glitches.

Just twice during this time on, different albums/tracks, the tracker moved along the bottom but no sound came from the speakers. After about a minute of this an error box came up saying "Engine #3 did not start within the expected time". I hit 'stop' and 'play' and it went back to the start of the tracks and played just fine.

It may not be relevant, but in each case I had two complete albums on the list for playing.

Cheers Chris
98  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Question about Q1 slider on: October 05, 2007, 11:13:36 am
so from what you posted, could i make a conclusion that for common listening, Q1 slider is best at 0 until -4 point?

thanks for the reply Happy

I have settled at -3. I would try there first to get a grasp of how its performing. If its not to your liking then bounce about a bit. You cant do any harm to the software or your system (30, at the other end, also has some admirers). Dont tick 'doubled' 'upsampled' or 'reversed' till you have got used to what is going on.
99  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Question about Q1 slider on: October 05, 2007, 10:47:06 am
Welcome WeHa. I'll have a go at answering that, but Peter mey want to chip in.

Unlike a volume control the Q1 slider is not a straightforward 'linear' device going from one extreme to another. At each position it has a different impact on jitter.
Because we are running different systems, in particular sound cards and DACs, it is impossible to predict the best position for your system. Many of us have ended up between 0 and -4.
At the very low end some people experience a reaction in their systems (cracklings) but nothing that will harm your speakers. As you get used to the software you will find your own best position. You will find a fair bit of discussions on other postings. Good luck

PS
If you put a brief description of your system in your 'signature' it can help people decide what advice to give you.
100  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: The Q1 and it's mystery on: September 23, 2007, 09:15:40 pm
OK, I understand now. The Q1 slider is controlling cause not effect. Its adjusting jitter influence and not specifically a particular property of the sound  good

I take your point about the sampling rate of the Fireface (I still use 256) and will get my act together and buy the plug-in firewire connection, rather than continuing to use the inbuilt one which limits the ability of the firewire. Thats the problem when things sound so good it builds in inertia to change. Wink

Hi Peter

I guess I was jumping to the wrong conclusion about the Q1 slider Happy.
I had assumed it had two extremes (like a volume control) -4 and +30 and that all points in between were a blend of these two extremes. In other words 13 was a 50% blend of the characteristics at -4 and +30.

My quick listening at the lower numbers suggested 'dangerous' 'spotlight' 'intense insight' and at higher values 'relaxed' 'smoothness' 'easy listening'.

Looks like I will have to go back and listen more intently, particularly as you say that one or two of the positions may have very distinct character of their own. good

But do you mean an avatar ? If so, that can be 65x65 pixels only. I think it is so that when it's larger it just does not show up (or is thrown away).

65x65 works good Wink
103  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: The Q1 and it's mystery on: September 21, 2007, 09:45:54 am
I played my set up on -4 last night for a few hours. Just because I could Wink.

In reality I wanted to get a fix on what was happening at that end of the slider, so I could better judge where to set it. No technical issues at all, played without any nasties.

The jury is still out on SQ at that end of the slider. It throws a big spotlight on individual elements of the music and is an effect I have not heard like this before, so will take a period of adjustment before I know if I really like it. Certainly there was no distortion or listening fatique and yes its sounded more 'live'.

Will continue the listening over the weekend.  good good

Cheers Chris
104  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Buglist as per September 13, 2007 on: September 19, 2007, 11:32:41 am
It was late at night and I didn't pay a lot of attention blush2

I had an album loaded in the playlist and was sitting back relaxing. I think after track 1 or 2, when moving on to the next track, an error message flashed up. I cant remember what it said, but as the next track started playing OK I just achnowledged the message and that was when the big red cross replaced the entire playlist area. I dont remember any disturbance to the music throughout.

I cant tell if the message was the same as Johans because of the language difference, but the red cross certainly was. (strange how I get drawn to that album sleeve of his Wink)

Next time, if it happens again, I will make note of the error message. Sorry, not much help.

Hi Peter,

During listening to the 0.9k version I have got two times a dotnet error message. See attachment. Music was still playing. I have not seen this error in any other version of XX.

Regards, Johan

Me have that too....not too often....but too....
Thanks for reminding me of this Johan.

Well still the music goes on regardless the error.

gerner

Dont know if this is the same issue.
Last night the program had a slight wobble, I got an error message which I didn't catch, then the box where the playlist resides was relaced with a big red cross on white background - but the music kept playing  good good
