I'm sure, I didn't encounter this problem with any previous versions.

...and what's really weird is that the attempts to issue the ALT-X command all seem to be backed up, so although the mouse doesn't move and there's no response of any kind, once the playlist finally comes to an end the warning dialog about XX already running; etc. appears for as many times, I think, as I attempted the command. I then hit "cancel" on these dialogs and need to do ALT-X again to bring XX gui back up. At this stage, the BT devices are obviously responding again. During playback they are. in suspended animation!

Thanks Peter, Tried it, doesn't seem to help! Mouse and Keyboard remain unresponsive.

Is there a service exception I can enter instead?

Thanks so much Boleary. I think I just realised what's happening; I've lost the use of Bluetooth in unattended mode and I'm using a Bluetooth mouse & keyboard.

1.86 must be turning off the BT service, which didn't happen under previous versions or on Win 7.

I need to figure how to stop XX from stopping Bluetooth.

Listening to a long Jazz playlist right now and seems like I'll have to listen all the way to the end. Never mind, sounds good!

5  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / ALT-X not working to stop 1.86 on: February 18, 2014, 04:32:15 pm
Peter,

Under W8 unattended with V1.86 ALT-X has not effect. This was after a reboot.

How do I stop it?

Thanks,

Geoff
6  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Request for feature to re-start Audio Service on quit. on: January 09, 2014, 10:17:50 pm
Thanks Peter. I'm not sure if that would accomplish exactly what I'm after though.

I want to do all this in Min OS, because I want to keep as much minimised as possible when I run JR for DSD.

This seems to benefit SQ there as well.

That's why I just want WASAPI restored when I'm in still in Min OS without rebooting in and out of Min OS.

I hope I explained it better this time.

7  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Request for feature to re-start Audio Service on quit. on: January 09, 2014, 02:45:18 pm
Peter,

I'm just wondering if it would be possible to automatically re-start certain services on quit.

Specifically I'd like to re-start the Windows Audio Service because I want to run another player for DSD only and that requires it.

This would save me going into services and manually restarting it, together with its two dependencies each time.

Even better might be the ability for the user to choose exactly which services get restarted on quit.

Obviously when running XX again, all the services requested to be stopped should be stopped as usual at unattended.

Thanks for considering it.

8  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Music stops after one or two tracks in XX-1.186-a (W8) on: January 09, 2014, 02:40:24 pm
I had the same problem as you Juan. Only one or two tracks would play then I got an error message about not being able to fetch the data.

In my case changing the clock res from 1ms to 1.25ms totally fixed it and I'm able to play complete albums now. This is with all other settings as per Peters sig, except I'm not using a playback drive or running XX from a Ram Disk at the moment.

Hope it helps,

Hi Johan,

Thanks. Will definitely give those settings a try under Win 7.

Just got it running under Win 8 with excellent results.

I haven't yet tried fetching music files over the lan, where the lan is only on while fetching the files. This is an interesting feature indeed and seems to imply that storing music on a NAS is now preferable to a drive tethered directly to the computer. Although Peter is mainly speaking about an old computer instead of a NAS.

I would rather use a NAS as long as there are no delays or SQ hits.

Thanks Robocop and Peter for clarifying that. I've been listening to it initially with Peter's settings for the 0.9.... version; but will also try it with the W8 settings under W7. I'm just looking for good starting points and will tweak it from there to get the sound I want on both OS's. I find it's better to start at different extremes and then work my way towards something that best suits the system.

Of course, I'll be trying it under W8 as well.

Cheers,

12  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / 1.86a For W8 only? on: January 02, 2014, 09:23:54 pm
In the realease notes and SQ comments, I only see W8 mentioned. Just wondering if there's any advantage to running the latest version on W7 as well.

If so any guidelines on optimum parameters for W7?

Thanks,

Geoff

I think this is a terrific idea!

14  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Apple Lossless Support on: December 05, 2013, 10:28:32 am
A couple of years ago I read a post here requesting support for Apple Lossless. I was just wondering if you have got any further with that Peter.

The format has been open for some time as with flac, I believe, so hopefully supporting it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

This would be a great feature for those of us who have large libraries already in that format and don't want to convert them to another.

I believe you always convert to WAV before playback anyway.

Thanks,

Geoff

I also found the difference between, "not the best" and "optimal" to be dramatic. So I'm glad you posted that Juan.

I went backwards and forwards between the two over the last few days and finally agree that "optimal" is the preferred setting.

Compared to "not the best" resolution seems "hyper-real" with optimal.  More interesting, more involving.

In my main system with the NOS1 "not the best" could be a useful setting when listening at low to moderate levels. The sound appeared warmer and the bass seemed to be boosted, making listening at those levels more enjoyable.

If I started at higher than moderate levels with "not the best", I tended to want to turn it down. Conversely if I started at moderate or lower levels with the "optimal" setting I tended to go in the opposite direction and crank it up to realistic levels.

"Not the best" then for me is actually "the best" when I'm forced to listen at low levels.

I imagine it will also be useful for edgier recordings where, for example, sibilance appears exagerated on female vocals.

Geoff

PS: I need to change my sig. Settings are currently the same as Peter's
