I am sorry. I meant "at 100% clock frequency" ! And this is not because I shut down the control over it. It's something else I've shut down.

ahh. mhh but check what you have installed from the asus cd. Really:)

For a bit of fun (sad) I used to follow how quickly the PC shuts down, it gets quicker and quicker as things are stripped and tuned. From the moment you click the power down button to the PSU relay clicking off with a dead screen it takes 3 seconds ! Now RAM disk is installed and writing the disk from memory it takes ages  unhappy

Nick.

I never turn it off, I just put it to sleep Wink It consumes 4-5W when sleeping.

My power settings are 1h for HDDs (one), anything else never turn off. When i want it to sleep, i do that MANUALLY. Recovery from sleep is 2seconds.

c. My cpu runs at 100% all the time (which is not what did the trick);

Uninstall ANY asus utility that you may have put.

Peter, I really don't like the idea of saving the image file a shutdown every time, not because of length of shutdown and bootup but because you never really know what you're saving particularly if things went somewhat wrong at some point during the session.

I dont really see the problem of this. When you use xxhe on a normal HD the stuff is there when you reboot. Now you can do that with the ramdisk too.
155  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: We all fell in the W7 pitfall on: October 08, 2010, 09:52:26 pm
Nick, do you use underclocked and undervolted system? It brings great improvements imho...

I also disagree.
What I think it really matters is to disable the energy saving features from bios, including EIST and C1.
Then i undervolt 0,1V just for keeping the cpu coooler.

I've just received a message from Cantatis and they say that Overture can't and won't work with 176kHz sample rate in Vista, because it's impossible. I guess, I'm gonna have to stick with no upsampling for 44kHz stuff  unhappy

It's impossible FOR THEM. But since it's possible with other soundcards with the same chipset, it means that they need better programmers Wink

BTW, I did the test of 8x AP vs no AP and it's NOT a huge difference, the ramdisk is way more important.
157  Ultimate Audio Playback / Playback Tweaks and Source related subjects / Re: RAMDisk on: October 08, 2010, 03:57:44 pm
Moral : first wait until the RAMDisk shows up automatically after a reboot (thus, maybe two), and when that works, copy in the XX data, set the settings, and finally check that box "Save Image on shutdown" and also save the Image at that point.

Yeah, i'm at this point now.
After several trials (and loosing xxhe with all its settings), i have managed to have the ramdisk available at boot, i put a dummy text file and i'm going to restart again.

158  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: We all fell in the W7 pitfall on: October 08, 2010, 01:58:10 pm
I spent lots of time to the ramdisk to have it working (huge difference), at the same time of the registry and DPS fixes, and couldnt check without yet, so i'll do it later this afternoon.

The clocks are in SOME of those keys in W7 and i wonder if they can be ADDED to the missing ones Wink
159  Ultimate Audio Playback / Playback Tweaks and Source related subjects / Re: RAMDisk on: October 08, 2010, 01:55:17 pm
It took two reboots for this dataram disk to appear and it's hard to change the size when every option is greyed out unhappy
But it plays great! No going back to "normal" playback.

and now i'm out for lunch  Wink

... if you could connect them somewhere ...

oops

Yeah, mainboards without "legacy" ps2 ports are a disaster, intel's stupidity at its best.
A SP1 or SP2 version of Vista can work, or an update to the bios. Getting a ps2 keyboard or mouse was indeed the simplest solution, provided that he can attach it.

Telstar,

Let me know what you think to the Global DEP disable.

Have you tried the MMCS service prioritisation regedit ? It's in a longish post from me a few pages back in the thread. The effect fundermantal to relay Happy, this is the one you REALLY want to apply for best music.

Nick.

Yes, i printed both things.

On W7 the DEP can be disabled without {current} in the command line, that is:
bcdedit.exe /set nx AlwaysOff

Also the clock key is missing in two of the 4 entries (i think audio and audio pro, but i should check again) - is that normal? I'm using W7 64.
162  Ultimate Audio Playback / Playback Tweaks and Source related subjects / Re: RAMDisk on: October 08, 2010, 12:43:45 pm
Peter,

I might be writing complete nonsense now...

Is it possible to partition ramdisk with 2 separate cluster sizes?
Then the small files and coverart can sit in the 4k cluster sized partition.

Raj

It should be possible to create 2 ramdisks, but i think that the dataram software that we are using doesnt support 2 ramdisks at the same time. (i still cant see the letter unit, which must be "O" btw  Grin)
163  Ultimate Audio Playback / Phasure NOS1 DAC / Re: World's first NOS 24/192 filterless DAC ? on: October 08, 2010, 11:39:28 am
I will be short and I wont report on what we did in sequence - it doesn't matter in the end.

First of all, thanks again and again to Peter, Ciska and Paul for the hospitality and the great time - I was never unconfortable with them. OK, this includes Roy Happy

IMO the NOS1 keeps the promise of providing transparent and uncolored sound, and it will be extremely enjoyable provided that what is fed to is good enough. This means decent recordings and XXHE run from a ramdisk in Vista (so far no other options work).

-A poor recording will show all the issues where they are as they are not "corrected" by filters or other means. Really poor recordings are unlistenable, and it cannot be otherwise if we are not adding or correcting anything. But so-so ones can be enjoyed or re-discovered (i.e. REM - Everybody hurts in the original release, way better than the remaster).
-The Software played from a SSD will also contaminate the sound in a way that has been described by the three crazies (me, Peter and Roy) as "aggressive" and "messy" and it took us just a few seconds to want to go back to the ramdisk/vista.

About "highres" recordings, i'm waiting for Peter to open a dedicated thread.
Instead, i'll mention the really highres stuff - the DXD material which is UNFILTERED. Peter had 4 tracks provided by 2NL (i think), I chose a sonata of Beethoven and we played it. Strangely Peter never played it... it showed the true potential of the DAC, but it also showed a bug in the software that played it at HALF SPEED :D While there were too many bass notes and too few highs (which is weird for a Beethoven piece), there was also an absolute blackness, room-filling harmonics of 20th+ order, and complete lack of fatigue that 80db seemed like 60. Really a pity for the halved HF, cause they could have been the first high piano tones that would satisfy me, apart from the real thing.

Comparing to the very old version of the DAC that I auditioned 1 year and half ago, the progresses are huge and are all in the right direction. I was finally able to perceive the emotion of the music at a more intimate level, which means chillings and/or goosebumps.
I cannot point ANY of the small defects perceived sometimes to the DAC itself. There is a bit of dryness and that's the horns. We changed the amplifiers and there came a sonnolent smoothness similar to many Pass Labs amps, that i dont like at all. Speed speed speed.

Now I can patiently wait for the 8-channels version with a working software XO. It seems it will take between 6 and 12 months, while the 2 channel version will be ready soon.

The future is bright (but uncoloured).

I checked BIOS and everything having to do with USB is Enabled.  What really puzzles me is that it's worked before and I don't recall changing any settings. Mouse and keyboard also work fine in Windows 7.  Hmmm...

Get temporary a ps2 keyboard or mouse.
165  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: We all fell in the W7 pitfall on: October 08, 2010, 10:52:12 am
From a command prompt with admin privileges;
To turn DEP off “bcdedit.exe /set nx {current} AlwaysOff” then reboot

gotta try this right now Happy
