Does this mean that even with a "band limited within itself" 24/96 file it will still sound better upsampled because of the increased resolution?

Yes, with AP. It makes perfect sense if you read the threads about how AP works and the tests that Mani did with the samples.

Quote
If so, wouldn't it make sense to rip a redbook cd as a 24/96 with a ripper like dbpoweramp?

I think that doesnt make any sense. On the contrary you would loose a few times of AP upsampling, i.e.:
44.1k - 16x to 752k (with the NOS1)
96k - 8x to 768k (")
scale down for 192k limited dacs (4x and 2x respectively)

Besides it could also be a non-integer resampling rather than a 0-stuffing what done by dbpoweramp (i dunno).
Short answer: no, rip the way the cd was recorded.

The DAC is galvanically isolated from the PC, and on that matter I would dare state that the PC can not make a difference.

So, WiFi, seperate videocard, overclocking are also allowed in the dedicated audio PC.
So no more power tweaking and such (CPU, RAM)

Wow, dedicated audio PC, is no longer a necessity, just get a fast PC.

No, or better ni.
1) Wi-Fi contaminates the AIR and all electronics are subject to the dangerous RFI and EMI. We cannot do a sh*t, but shield every piece of equipment very well.
Why? Because unless you live in an isolated, very isolated villa, you'll have already a few wi-fi networks hanging on you. Try with any modem or smartphone. My iphone picks up an average of 2-4 from my neighbors.
So the recommendation of Peter to avoid it only apply if you dont have it already. Otherwise, I dont see other solution than shield every piece of electronic gear in a thick mu-metal cage.

2) Non dedicated PC - I think Peter answered you on this. Various processes can still influence xxhe, that is the sound, so best to avoid. But the computer can be fast, as long as fanless and EMI/RFI controlled (note that Peter has his computer FAR from the DAC and his system, AFAI Remember).

3) PC PSU. Here instead special care to the computer power source ***should*** NOT be needed anymore, when using the NOS1, with its special interface.
But, what is needed is a filter to block the noise FROM the PC psu and any other switching equipment that is connected to the same power line (I mean line not plug) to protect the OTHER electronics in picking it up, namely the amplifiers (the NOS1 seem to have an excellent PSRR by itself)
I'm going to build such filter for about 300W power, single rail and 6 plugs. It'll be open source/diy.
At this regard if someone can source the fabric used by Furutech to absorb EMI/RFI, it would be a nice addition.

Additionally for you Telstar, this version of the DAC supports the 8 channel business, but it is not programmed yet. Not in the CPLD, not in XXHighEnd, and not for the real purpose : the XOver stuff.

There is time... The XO stuff i think at the beginning i can handle it like now (which means no highe than 4x AP)

But the parts for your amps should stay away for 8 weeks, to keep things fair.
Happy Happy

Probably it'll take longer, who knows Happy In the meanwhile I seem to have found the best VAS (which worked even with 300mV out and will have easier job now).

And i have yet those tickets to buy...

thanks for the update  Happy
I think i can start ordering parts for the amplifiers now  Wink

Incidentally, one of the guys who was over at my place has dropped me an email. He says about the Quad 2805 speakers, "Hi-Fi World's measurements show a 6ohm average with a low of 3.2 ohms and a high of 12 ohms."

Mani.

I think that the hypex modules provide lots of current that the ESL likes. Some other current monster SS may likely provide an overall better sound but at a cost several times higher (also a faster amp than Pass designs is needed to keep up with the Quads). Something along the lines of Viola and Mark Levinson.
231  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Re: Testing a few amps on: June 08, 2010, 09:02:25 am
Before I got the Quads, I was multi-amping a pair of Wilson-Benesch Chimera speakers (yes, also gathering dust in my basement!) with a total of eight UcD700HG amps. Of course, you'd think that 700W into 4ohms for tweeter is total overkill. Yes, but boy did they sing with this sort of power on tap. In any event, the Hypex amps are mighty fine up top as well as down below.

Mani.

Personally, I would never use a class-d or any amp with global feedback for the tweeters.
But I think the ucd2k are just what my subs will need Happy
232  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Re: Testing a few amps on: June 07, 2010, 08:05:33 pm
BUT... I've heard many class-D amps, and can tell you that they are not all made equal. There is one make that stands head and shoulders above all the others I've heard. And that is Hypex, designed by Bruno Putzeys and made in Holland (does anyone get the feeling, like me, that the Dutch are taking over?).

The amp we heard was one that I put together using two Hypex UcD700HG modules with their recommended voltage regulators and massively over-specified linear PSs.

Good to know. I'll use hypex modules for my subs Happy

Mani, did you have a chance to listen to some good quality Tripaths (t-amps)?

No tripath chip is able to power his electrostatics.
234  Ultimate Audio Playback / Playback Tweaks and Source related subjects / Re: Does Improving PC PSU and Reducing PC EMI/RFI Improve SQ? on: June 07, 2010, 08:02:36 pm
I use the Winmate dc-dc psu with a switching psu (gateway 150W). It's not linear but i think it improved things comparing to the internal psu i was using before.
I'm going to build an OUTPUT filter/distributor for all the switching-equipment that I have to isolate the audio chain (i.e. the amplifiers and the dac).

RFI is produced by the computer itself, isolating it with a transformer or other means is very important IF a digital or analog signal comes from it.I'm waiting to find out the NOS1 computer interface before mumbling further.

Yes, that has been suggested before, and it really is a good idea. It will be there at some stage !

oh yes!  Wink
236  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: SQ of 0.9z on: June 01, 2010, 01:34:42 pm
The more i listen to it and the more it sounds "right".
My most sincere compliments, Peter. It's since 0.5y that I dont feel such kind of improvement. And this is with an OS dac of average quality.
Got the goosebumps since I dont remember when.

 pleasantry
237  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: 0.9z on: May 30, 2010, 04:01:47 pm
I really don't understand what you mean now. Is this related to the earlier posts ? or something new ? In either case I don't get it. Cry

No, it's not related - it's one of my feaure requests.
I always wanted an "apply settings" button that will store all settings without having to quit xxhe and restart it. This was especially useful when xxhe would crash out of nowhere and all settings were lost.
Is it more clear now?
238  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: I almost had a heart attack on: May 29, 2010, 03:16:47 pm
Love the new GUI but I could not find a way to do continuous play or loop play yet.

Never been available. But i really want this. I sometimes like to listen to the same album 4 or 5 times in a row.
Please, peter add a "repeat playlist" (that works Wink ).

There is a hdcd led somewhere?

Maybe I don;t understand the question, but under where normally the FLAC logo appears, there will be the HDCD logo, if HDCD encoding is detected.

Let me check. I dunno if the album was hdcd or not. The numbers in the top left still show the 176400 upsampled bitrate.
Checking...
OK, so it shows FLAC and below hdcd.
This means that it's not upsampling, correct?
240  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: 0.9z on: May 29, 2010, 03:11:56 pm
BTW, Peter please add an "APPLY SETTINGS" button - it's much better than quitting and restarting xxhe since i'm forced to do everytime a new version is up Wink
