256  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: new GUI! on: May 26, 2010, 09:28:34 am
Overall is cool. But:
- confusing at first (couldnt find the gallery!) but when you get used it's a nice improvement.
- the buttons and text are way too small. This is exactly the opposite as what i expected. Try to see it at 1920x1200 and uou'll understand. I had to rely to the slow see below) tooltips to know what the hell every button was (except the config, play and stop which were obvious).
- Text too small in buttons and gui (ok in the help panel)
- Too much emboss makes the leds seem on and white, when they are off.
- tooltips take to long to appear, same applies for the help text in the middle panel when activated. But this can be related to the general slowness i experience.
- again please remove the transparency below the title bar.
- minimize, maximize and exit buttons on the upper right corner should have some picture in the off state, it's confusing as of now.

The slowness is yours (isn't it always Happy).
You could try to qualify it though ...

It is strange indeed, since you have a slower cpu.

I was straight to bed when i posted. I will elaborate:
The gui takes 3s to load compared to <1s. Then, when i click play it takes more than 5 seconds to start playing! Same settings as the previous version.
Moreover, the library is behaving slowly and weirdly like when you first introduced KS. Maybe some code rolled back? Maybe some optimizations are out?

BTW, ceteris paribus i THINK SQ improved (adaptive).

i'll talk about the GUI in the other thread.

For now i have only one word: SLOW, painfully slow UI and that's from my E8500.

PS: please remove the transparency below the top bar, it is annoying.

3. E8600-based PC in Zalman totally silent (no moving parts) case with Gigabyte mobo, fast memory and one SSD
4. i7-based PC (hyperthreading off) in Zalman totally silent (no moving parts) case with Gigabyte mobo, ultra-fast memory and two SSDs

Any difference in SQ between the two?
Peter told me that there isnt much more resources involved in octal AP. And i hope so.

That leads me to conclusion: drivers' "performance" is more important than overall performance of a PC

I quite agree with this Happy

261  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: The optimal PC-setup on: May 23, 2010, 01:31:39 pm
Well, a NAS would be a perfect solution, especially since it can be located in another room. This is what i will do when i'll need more than 2TB of space, which for my speed is not very soon Happy

Do you have any arguments against NAS about SQ, Peter?

Also, I have to figure out the thing about wireless keyboard/mouse (i.e trying without)
262  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Next track in unattended mode on: May 23, 2010, 01:27:39 pm
Mwah ... Solved for 0.9z.

Good!
Now we just have to wait for 0.9z Happy

Its still a good mobo...........

*nods*

And with the applications you mean the cd's that are in the box?

Yes.

Quote
The box shows pic's of  Ultra Durable 3 and 2oz Copper btw.

wacko *scratches head*

Anyway, no mobo will force those features on you. Knowing gigabyte biooses, you can disable all of them at hardware level Happy
(Indeed i did that on mine).
Enjoy your new toy.

I'm sure the Trinity, with its [EDIT: eight 1704s per channel] is an amazing DAC... but I bet it'd be even better if it had a wordclock out.

I know I 'bang on' about wordclocks all the time... but only because I know from experience how important it is for SQ to have the master clock sitting right next to the DAC chips.

Mani.

I agree with you.

Gerard,

Just DONT install any of the applications bundled with the mainboard and get the drivers (except maybe the network card) from the manufacturers.

The main difference between the two mainboards are the lack of the 2oz copper (the ultradurable) and a little slower video chipset (harder to play BD with it).

Thanks for this comparison Happy
I was waiting for it for awhile.

Telstar,

Did you use 1 or 2 winmates in your setup.
2x 130W winmate is already on its way to Holland !
Was thinking of using 1x130W for mobo and cpu and 1x130W for hdd's and remote control unit
with a lite-on 210W ac/dc adapter from ebay.

Should work fine.....

Roy

One is enough. The lite-on must be very good. I have only 2 hdds + SSD.
For your setup i think you did right to take 2.
269  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Core Appointment and Multicore CPU-s on: May 15, 2010, 12:03:59 pm
This is crayz. One track is subjectively better with Scheme-2, another played via Scheme-3 :D I put back my previous statement about Scheme-2 beeing better than Scheme-3. Further comparisons show that they're definately different, however Scheme-3 is more refined - I can set the volume louder and music still plays clear.

Next week I should receive my new soundcard and will be able to do some direct comparisons between PCI and USB-to-SPDIF -> DAC playback.

Well, you have a quad core, I had a dual xeon. Do more tests, i'ts interesting Happy
