This is solved for the next version (0.9y-5).

 clapping clapping clapping

Actually no. In y-06 I still got it unhappy

Hi Telstar. What do you mean ? I don't see you applied the Anti Image upsampling filter ...
So now my question is : what exactly when wrong in your case ?

No, it cant play no matter if i use a filter.

Plain vanilla now and see attachments.

364  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: 0.9-y6 can`t find my music files on: February 22, 2010, 01:39:34 pm
Similar (same?) issue with a Coldplay cd just happened.

Some clue can be in the xx log file (attached). So far it is the first time i get this error.

PS: In y5-6 the volume "remote control error" crash still happens.

Besides from what I "promised" in the release notes, what do you mean ?

Thanks,
Peter

I mean that i thought the error was fixed according to the relase notes, but it's not. Haven't used y-6 much yet to know if it still happens.
366  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: start menu windows symbol disappears on: February 21, 2010, 10:24:25 pm
Is this only when xx plays....?

Yes.
367  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / start menu windows symbol disappears on: February 21, 2010, 09:29:37 pm
FYI Peter, this glitch keeps happening to me. Hovering the mouse restores it.

PS: In y5-6 the volume "remote control error" crash still happens.

Hey Telstar which recording of the Etudes are you listening to? Nelson Freire? Just wondering cause I haven't tried to "tune" in the piano yet. Happy

Nikita Magaloff (philips), Etudes op.0 and op.25.

Gettin' lost here: For singer songwriter vocalists, Eva Cassidy, Patty Griffin, Jackson Browne, Dylan, James Taylor  etc., its kernel streaming with 2x arc prediction: they have never sounded so good. But for classical, (Bach violin concertos, Ann-Sophie Mutter) turn off arc prediction for the kind of precision and separation between instruments offered by engine 3. For Rock and roll, dunno, don't really listen to it that much, but I'd think no AP would be better.  wacko   Shocked  wacko

Yes, i feel the same now (after many more hours). For piano pieces, i'm divided. Yesterday night I really enjoyed Chopin Etudes with KS.
370  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Can 16/44.1 files be upsampled to 24/192 using AP? on: February 15, 2010, 09:28:07 am
Hi Peter,

I have a strange situation where my my Overdrive DAC does not support 176.4. My native files are 16/44.1; if I use QAP (my soundcard is 24 bit Off Ramp) then my output files from XXHE would be 24/176.4, which is supported by the soundcard but not by the DAC. Is there a way I could upsample my native files to 24/192 through XXHE?

Arvind

I asked the same question a few months ago and the short answer is no. Upsampling must be integer (2x, 4x, 8x).
371  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: KS with q1=-1 locks my computer on: February 14, 2010, 12:18:23 pm
If you know what to look for, you can see this is driver behaviour. Here is an example of it without further explanation : Re: 0.9y-5-05.

Although I am very sorry these things happen, please notice that we are "asking" for these kind of problems. And yes, of course I urge you to it.
The least you can do (at trying Q1 values) is not setting the thread priority so high. It may help. Once you found a good setting, yuo can set the priority back.

The next version should be more "under control".

It's ok, Peter.
I knew it were the drivers, creative is known for sh*tty drivers. It's the need for a cold power up that scared me.

I used the same settings as GerardA (Q1 = 11, Q2,3=18, Q3,4=0, KS) before without any issue. Those settings are my favourite with the x-fi.
372  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / KS with q1=-1 locks my computer on: February 14, 2010, 01:21:06 am
the main one, with the x-fi

it becomes totally unresponding, while the music flows. the only fix is to power off (reset isnt enough).

very, very weird.
373  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: New to this, but have been dreaming of doing this for a while... (introduction) on: February 13, 2010, 06:24:51 pm
Well the Lynx AES16 is digital in and digital out, so I will need external DACs.

Yes, is about he same as the RME AES32. Somebody says that RME has better clock (in case your dac has a wordclock out, slaving the transport almost always has a very positive impact).

Quote
However I wouldn't spend more than $1500 per 2 channels. I wold never use a DAC that sits in a computer. However I also don't think we really need $5000-1000 DACs for 2 channels either. The actual DAC chips today perform much better than they did even 2 years ago.

While I agree with you in general about the prices of highend gear today (it is minimum 3x overpriced), there are exceptions (which i call the best buy products), there is diy, where there is almost no markup.
Building a state of the art dac is really expensive and much more difficult than building a preamp or a power amp. I reasearched the matter for two years and you couldnt have guessed that 99,9% of the products out there do one thing or the other NOT in the best possible way. Wether is the digital input, or the clock, or the dac chip, or the output stage, or the psu, or the volume control. Astonishing but true.
I didn't build my own because -thanks gods- somebody else at last did all things right, Peter (or i hope so becuse i havent checked the very last version, and the final one is not ready yet)

Now, your figure is quite close to the COST of building a state of the art DAC. If you look at the pricing of Peter's NOS1, its a little more than that for 4 channels. And he spent several thousand euros on equipment, R&D and dealing with suppliers. He will make the ROI maybe after selling a thousand pieces Wink
But in the hifi world, the really good DACs can be counted with the fingers of one single hand and are all over 3000€ for 2 or more channels. Adding channels it's a minor addition to the overall cost (good for us).
374  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: New to this, but have been dreaming of doing this for a while... (introduction) on: February 13, 2010, 06:10:27 pm
Your point #2 is interesting and it makes me believe that I do not have the resources to truly perform a per driver correction. I would need to take my equipment to an anechoic chamber and fit it in an infinite baffle and measure each one. This will not be easy or even very possible at this stage for me.

Right now I am thinking about starting with decent drivers from ATC or just get the passive ATC SCM40. They have some experience in making drivers and the price is reasonable for the quality.

Most drivers have those measurements published in their datasheet and done by the manufacturer Happy
Just keep in mind that sometimes are too much smoothed to cover defects. A reliable manufacturer like ATC is a safe bet, so i would trust their measurements.
375  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: 9Y-6 special mode on: February 13, 2010, 06:06:16 pm
I finally did some listening comparison on the dedicated pc.
y4 with engine 3 Q1=4 and all rest to 0, no upsampling (y5-6 does the same with this configuration).
This is the best sound i have ever got from this system. It has PRAT, it doesnt fatigue me.

y5-4 with engine #4 KS. With the same settings i get the special mode, I had to raise to Q1 to 19 to go back to normal mode. But the problem is that i dont hear a damn difference between normal mode and special mode unhappy
So i settled for Q1=18. I tried to raise the other sliders and didnt like or didnt change much.

So, the comparison was between wasapi Q1=4 and KS Q1=18, all attended and without upsampling.

KS is less reliable, sometimes xxhe crash, while wasapi is finally stable.
The sound of KS is like wadding cotton. the midrange is super smooth, while the upper end is rolled off. the voices SEEM more natural but the instruments like cymbals, percussions loose the sparkle and dont ring right to me. I started to experience listening fatigue after about half an hour, whuich is a bad, bad symptom.

It's like the sound is more natural but less realistic.

With my current setup (remember that i am forced to use 2048 samples and that the equalization adds latency), i definitely prefer engine #3.
