In the end of the day I will be going to spend some cash on a fanless PSU, fanless case and SSD; I've grown quite allergic to PC noise.

Yeah, me too. I thought I could do with a very silent PC, but i was wrong. I need fanless too. Get a DC-DC psu (es. pico-psu) with external transformer, it is safer than fanless AC psus and add no heat to the computer.

Hi Telstar,

You get this quite often, but do you do the same as Gerard just told ? (not that it is wrong to do or want, but from your description I read some other problem, perhaps).

Peter

Yep:
"This happends when a songs has ended and the next in line does not start."

But my playlists are sometimes a single cd, not from different ones as Gerard. I have to say that I didnt pay much attention if I have more than one cd in playlist.
453  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Music stops 0.9y-4 on: October 20, 2009, 04:52:31 pm
I get this also quite often, and then after a few seconds (buffer?) the music stops.
More often than the remote thing error when i change the volume.

This is with y-4.

the price now can be 2165 euro
This is a league to high for me. Please make a second DAC the Poor Man's NOS DAC for about 700 euro's! Then there are more "everybody's". Great change that I will become a buyer.

Regards,
Johan

I'm afraid that that price point would incur more compromises that Peter is willing to make.
I remind you that he is selling the DAC without taking int account all the time spent and the money for the test equipment, and with a very little markup. If he were a <insert your favourite highend brand> the DAC would cost from 8k euros up.
That's the naked truth.
455  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Does XXHE work on Windows 7 o/s? on: October 13, 2009, 04:07:12 pm
Hi Arvind,

Yes, quite some people are using it for a long time already (like over 6 months).

The only thing I wonder myself is whether the Wallpaper will work without additional settings in the OS, just because there was some discussion about that, and I don't think I ever saw the final solution, and whether it was user error to begin with. But anyway it can be solved (can be worked out with those using W7, which btw is not me, yet).

Peter

Yes, IIRC the wallpaper has to be set as tiles, otherwise it wont work.
Besides this xxhe works in w7 exactly as in vista.
456  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: Help me find a new DAC on: October 12, 2009, 07:28:23 pm
Well if you cant wait or afford the NOS1, your best bets are IMO to stay with the same dac chip and get a good implementation.
The Naim in your list fits the bill (but it is very close in price), the Audio-GD dacs are also good values, esp the reference one at 1500$+shipping and taxes.
457  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Volume change errors fixed ? on: October 09, 2009, 09:41:06 pm
Oh, I just wanted to ask additionally : how may times did you have it since the previous time (post) ?

Me 1x (at using a Volume change approx. 10-15x per day)

I would say close to 50% of the times that I use the volume. Never in any other case. I occasionally have a XXHE stopped working crash, but thats rare.

Quote
But please keep in mind not to use it when it's still "busy" with the previous one (OSD time is yellow or white), or at track boundaries; I wanted to solve *that* for 0.9y-4 but left it for -5 afterall. Happy

I never do that (and i'm still using only attended).

Quote
Btw, *if* you post one log file only, the XX is the most important. yes
Thanks again.
Peter

Fixed, I added the XX log.

Now, i'm in touch with SIMS support and hope they fix the asio drivers so i can get rid of that buffering issue. If you have some tip for me how to explain them the last fractions of second that is repeted endlessly when i pause or stop the music, it would be really helpful. Now i'm gonna record that, lol Happy
458  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Volume change errors fixed ? on: October 09, 2009, 07:55:02 pm
Ok, thanks for the log files !

But it is not related to PCs or anything. Just a general bug. Not related to volume either. Remember ?
Thanks,
Peter

I had the suspicion that my setup with Console, etc made it more commoin (>50% of the times)
Now I think is much more common with the 4x arc upsampling on. I got it another 3 times in a short time.
459  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Volume change errors fixed ? on: October 09, 2009, 07:10:11 pm
Now it happened again, on my other computer, without Console and all that rerouting stuff.

It is a "remote command" error as the last time. The interesting thing is that is on a different PC without anything between xxhe and the OS.

460  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Q Settings - Post your settings and general impressions on: October 09, 2009, 06:46:41 pm
Have played a bit more with Qs in y-4. Tried SeVeReD's settings, 4/26/26/0/0, ticked "invert" and WOW

Hmmm... I didnt tick invert. Will try that too Happy

Tried (on headphones, OS dac). I dont feel anything ticking invert. But 4/26 vs 4/0, keeping all the rest at 0 is interesting. The higher Q1 has a more smooth sound. I labeled it as distortion before, but now i'm not so sure. It is too hard to compare 4/0/0 vs 4/26/26, so i worked only on the Q1.

I also noticed that with Q1/2 = 0 the sound seems louder, which is not always a positive thing. The conclusion is that i'm more confused than before. I still think that Q1/2=0 produces a more natural sound, but I also think that putting 26 or such attains a positive effect on certain music.
461  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: How to manage xxhe in Unattended on: October 08, 2009, 11:23:28 pm
Thanks for the many replies.

I did some tests and unfortunately i cannot use quad upsampling at the moment due to 96k Console limitation. Besides, cpu % for the crossovers basically doubles from 20 to 40% going to 88.2k. I'm looking for a different PEQ to do the job (I will evaluate Algorytmix).

Still, I noticed is that the 88.2k arc-prediction upsampled sound is even more revealing of source material defects and DAC limitations, to the point that some commercial stuff is disgusting.

Test been done in attended. Unattended has to wait for tomorrow if i get the time (being rather busy with work).

The backbone of the Wallpaper album shows an ~ at the top for normal Phase and I for inverted phase.

A suggestion: marker for the upsampling, i.e. 4x, 2x, etc?
Also, do you plan to remove the other kinds of upsampling?

This system has a beautiful, extremely open sound. Not only did it lack even a hint of hardness or grain, it also rendered orchestral cymbals and triangles better than any other system I've heard in the past few years. The presentation was extremely fast and effortless, the sound beautiful to the extreme. I put on the first track from mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato's new Rossini recital, and sat transfixed. Brava to the mezzo, and bravo to the components.

Hey Peter, another cymbal lover :D
463  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / How to manage xxhe in Unattended on: October 08, 2009, 11:49:43 am
I'm probably dumb, but having used XXHE mostly in Attended mode, I dont really know how to control it in unattended.

So, what I'm asking is a list of commands to do the most basic things, i.e.
-stop/play
-pause
-next track

and how to bring back the program interface, and then to send it into oblivion again.

Thanks in advance to anyone who will reply. I plan to do some serious A/B comparisons with Arc predition on Happy
464  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Q Settings - Post your settings and general impressions on: October 07, 2009, 07:12:18 pm
Well I've been dancing all over the Qs tonight,,, but I seem to have fallen kinda back to 4 26 26 0 0  (Things I've tried: (2-4) (23-30) (23-30) 0 0; (2-4) 0 0 0 0 & invert vs normal on settings).  Right now, and that will change, I'm digging 4 26 26 0 0 on a recording that's very clear and lively in the top end (Submarines - Honeysuckle Weeks).  Also, sounds great on Beethoven quartets I'm playing now.

I quickly checked both 26/26 and 20/20 with Arc prediction 4x upsampling inserted and I prefer the 0/0/0/0 still.
Headphone test, will check tomorrow in the real system.
465  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: 0.9y-4 - w00t on: October 07, 2009, 07:11:10 pm
Arc Predicion 2x and especially 4x brings a significant SQ improvement. The goosebump effect is undeniable.
And I'm at headphones yet for today.

Tomorrow plain/4x arc -attended vs unattended.

After a quick check with q1/2 at 20/20 i think i still prefer those at 0, sounds more realistic to me (in headphones).
