Just for people who don't know this:

To REALLY reduce your shutdown time.
...

What's shutdown? Wink
My pc is supposed to be on all the time. S3 works marvelously on my setup. Less than 1s to come back to desktop.

Disable Transient Multimon Manager (TMM) : The Transient Multimon Manager (TMM) is a Microsoft Windows Vista operating system feature targeted at improving the user experience of connecting and disconnecting displays, particularly for the mobile user.
When you start Vista, you see a 2-3 sec delay followed by a blank black screen. This is the time Vista searches for external monitors. So if you dont use an external monitor, you could always safely turn this off!
To do so, Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Task Schedular.
On LHS, expand "Task Scheduler Library" then expand "Microsoft", then expand "Windows" and finally click "MobilePC". You will see a task called "TMM". Rt-Click on it, and select "Disable".

This is a nice one. I'll check tomorrow if i have this and if so, will be disabled.

BTW W7 has a few more services that showed in the computer management and task scheduler. I'll dig more into that, but as i said i achieved a silent hd just with Peter's optimization.

I also turned most of these off.
and there is a reboot required after doing this

Turn windows features on or off see pic. (in W7)

That uninstall the "feature", IIRC. I prefer the disabling approach that Peter followed.

Those services are about Aero ! (but are only shut down at Unattended ->> would you like that for attended too ? (no problem)).

Yes, but you can tell me which are and i can do that manually. I thought aero was to be disabled Happy

A quick listen told me that there is more transparency with the new build over the old computer used before. And that the pc is truly silent in my room (closed case now).

Ehh, Telstar ... isn't that exactly what is shut down at Unattended Playback ?

Yes it is. innocent

Are you talking about aero or the services? Happy I guess the latter.

Well, u know that i play always attended and that i hide the taskbar so the visual effect is the same but i can get back to xxhe or any other program if needed without much trouble. Unattended always left me out of control and i dont like the idea Wink

Ooookay, I reinstalled W7 Home Premium for the third time on the dedicated pc and did all optimizations following Peter's guide.

There are slight differences in W7, like readyboost and a couple more services not enabled by default. Also the HP version has less stuff than the Ultimate (that I have on my main computer). On a fresh install, also defrag is not running but it's scheduled nonetheless.

Disabling defended didnt cause any error, but disabling the schedule and unticking optins should be enough as well.

The logs must be disabled as Roy described, unticking the enabled checkbox.

Done everything, finished 10 mins ago, i restarted and checked the perf meter. not nice. Waited about 10 mins and then the VSS stopped and the disk activity became sort of dead (yay!) Music will play tomorrow.

Now, i have a question about visual things. I know that some people disable aero and all visual aids. What about this?
Peter, did you try already and thought not needed?
501  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Version 0.9y-1 feedback on: August 19, 2009, 11:57:09 am
I'm not convinced it's size 1024X1024 or whatever... it's the size of the file ... I ran into some .jpg that were like 8MB or something (how does a pic get into the 8 - 12MB size? something embedded?)

Scan at high dpi without compression. But to be 8MB it has to be 2000x2000 or above.

You guys really need to use photoshop to do this job. I download lots of covers from allcdcover and half of their scans needs to be cropped, smoothed and colors adjusted. Then I usually leave the normal resolution. I think I should instead make a smaller version 600x600 or 700x700. My own scans are set at 72dpi (screen resolution) and around 1000px IIRC.

Now that I have most of the DB already built it would be quite a pain to go trough all that and resize all. But indeed having lots of big covers makes the library quite slow.
Edit: didnt try the latest versions yet.

I know Telstar is going te be a very happy person.
When he finished his build next week combined with this version of XX

Wrong :D
I "finished" today. Just the irTrans software to install, then another restore point and add the music HDD and disabling services.

I had an old 500gb seagate disk that i wanted to use for backup but it's fricking hot (45°C) and would raise the internal temps, so it will go out and I'll get another disk. I have to see if the matrix raid can transform a single disk to a raid 1 in a second time (my guess is yes).

I had only one issue with my config and that was the BD drive not being able to boot when in AHCI or RAID mode. Had to put a dvdrom from another computer (still plugged to run memtestx86 all night) to install windows. I put W7 home premium x64 (msdn).

The rig has only one fan, undervolted and runs basically unaudible from 1,5m distance and open case top. So far i'm very happy.

Telstar, Rightclick desktop, Personalize, Desktop background, choose Picture position.
Then save changes.

Fixed!

I always use fill, never tile (which in vista was crop or something) and i'm using the landscape theme atm.

Anyway, I'll try more on the dedicated pc, i dont use wallpaper here.

Thanks for the feedback Telstar.
On 2), is that when XXEngine3.exe is not running ? ... that works ok here (in that case). And if so (XXEngine3 not running), how do you close XXHighEnd ?

From the X button in the top corner of the window (remember that i always play attended).
505  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Version 0.9y-1 feedback on: August 15, 2009, 02:03:30 pm
Morning,

About that "resize to 500 x 500" good

On my new little screen (18,5"), I'll have 1360x768 (took a model with low resolution native on purpose).
If we make it 600px, it would be perfect Happy

I agree with Roy that some biiig pictures in the gallery make it slow. I have really huge scans saved as folder.jpg.

506  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Version 0.9y-1 feedback - Nope on: August 14, 2009, 11:51:10 pm
Short playtime and two bugs (tested on W7 RTM x64):

1) start button disappears
2) background does not returns to normal when i close xxhe (this was solved for me in a previous build)

luv the long tree Happy
507  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: 6a skips the last piece of the last song in the playlist on: August 14, 2009, 11:28:12 am
I think I found this ... at last. Still never happened to myself which I thus far can't really explain. Anyway, I really hope is is solved for you in the next version (0.9-y1a or 0.9y-2).

Peter

PS: Also see Re: Version 0.9y-1 feedback

Cool. I HOPE i'll be able to mount the pc today.
508  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: "the back" of the CD is shown on: August 10, 2009, 12:14:05 am
For the upcoming version.
No dynamic fonts, but Verdana has been applied allright.

Why the font change? I got used to the times.

BTW, in attended mode with taskbar autohide everything is exactly as I want Happy
Sometimes I prefer your back with track list (more visible than some albums back).

Notice that the first shown album has no back.jpg, while the second has. Still all the combinations are possible.

Does this message mean that now i can choose whether to display the back.jpg picture?

Hi Josef,

The new install requires a new Activation Key in the first place. I just sent you a PM about that.

When i reinstalled Vista on my temporary music pc, I used the same activation code and it worked.
With new hardware i think its not the case, so you'll get an email soon, Peter Happy
I have all components (including the mainboard and SSD) and W7 ready to go.

510  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Accommodating non square cover art on: August 07, 2009, 08:30:53 pm
Note that I started off allowing a max heigth and max width at the same time

Well, then keep in mind that i have highres pictures, some of them bigger than my desktop (such as 1200px+), so i dont think it's a good idea.
instead cropping to make it square would be nice.
