just reading a post on other forum

Quote:
When a solid state drive is present, Windows 7 will disable disk defragmentation, Superfetch, ReadyBoost, as well as boot and application launch prefetching.

“These technologies were all designed to improve performance on traditional HDDs, where random read performance could easily be a major bottleneck,” explained Fortin.
One of the more notable advancements in Windows 7 is support for the Trim command.

I am lost for words that MS did something that smart.

Yes, but dunno if the RC has this feature already.
W7 will be the first SSD optimized OS. Especially "trim" is very important to avoid degradation.

You are quit right Telstar, yes

I decided to get myself a OCZ vertex 30 GB, as second OS only for audio.
Maybe make partition on it and use 6/10 GB for pagefile for other OS.

Dont partition, put the pagefile on the same partition. SSD do not defragment in the traditoinal way.

Should I close all usb ports, bluetooth, onboard soundcard and such.
(and shutdown as many services as possible)

Using http://www.blackviper.com/

Yes, disable ALL peripherals that you dont need to use. USB may be needed for mouse or keyboard, irDA etc.
blackviper site does not work. What's that?

Anyway you NEED to disable disk defragmenter on the SSD drive. Disable also indexing service (that i would turn off completely in a music pc).

And what about System-restore (we have a back-up), Internet, anti-virus do we need that

Keep system restore, it is the best thing since Vista came. You need no internet nor antivirus, but if you need to get updates now and then and cannot do though a lan, you should install a good AV, then go online, do all updates and then uninstall the antivirus.

What is best to use Vista or trying W7(got the .iso on disc) first?

I would try W7 RC first. If you are fine with the drivers, it cannot be worse for sound than Vista. (SP2 is coming too slowly)
Second best would be to wait for Vista SP2 install dvd (no updates needed in that case).

On the other hand, I think "that" location can be moved to somewhere else ...

He must also move the TMP and Temp (ideally to the same drive where he would download or decompress stuff) folders from advanced system settings.

Running a HTPC 60 GB would be better
I'm running a HTPC and using 32GB of OS space by now

But 30 GB should do the job ! But in my case i would make an image of my OS
Otherwise I have to start over (again)

roy

How? My fresh w7 64bit uses about 10gb.
We are talking about a pc dedicated to audio (no office, etc)

Very interesting.

So now you can calculate a digital correction signal to get perfect output from your DAC?
Like digital negative feedback, maybe not realtime but still?

Very evil thought.  sounds good !
I like it!  pleasantry

Peter,

You decided to go for the vertex and not wait for the intel to drop in price?

Yep, based on my suggestion. The vertex is close in performance to the intel MLC, a difference unnoticeable just playing music. It does not hangs like the old models and it is cheap, especially the 30gb version.

Peter got the 60gb verison because he has the development suite and needs more space, but we should be fine with 30gb (this answer the previous post).

Oh, obviously this is from my "super duper" NOS1 Phasure DAC, and I can tell you that a new version of it is coming up. This time it will have a kind of infinitly more "fast" analogue stage. Yep, that's the attention point now : very fast analogue parts. And we will see what that brings ...
(it has been a kind of quiet around the NOS1, right ? ... not for long anymore).

Yes! Too quiet.
And I'm waiting for updates :D

593  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Widows 7 RC on: May 10, 2009, 04:57:21 pm
But ok, I got as far as SP1 (isn't this the third time now ? Happy) in english (the official install still being dutch).

Great!

On the SSD/Vertex of course. whistle

And? Any issue?
I havent ordered the components for my music pc yet.

594  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Widows 7 RC on: May 07, 2009, 10:47:57 pm
... which it does.

Bad luck.

Cant you use Windows in English? It's years that I only use English software. I hate localizations. Italian ones often are silly.

Vista SP1 (soon SP2) is better than SP0 anyway Wink

BTW, do you guys suggest me to move to the RC? Did they updated the audio stack? AFAIK it wasnt yet in the build 7077 (that i have).
595  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Widows 7 RC on: May 06, 2009, 09:19:05 pm
Well the XXhighend is working fine under Windows 7 RC.

Cheers!

It was also working in previous builds (unlike foobar wasapi Wink ).
596  Ultimate Audio Playback / Music Storage and convenient playback / Re: General feedback, any possibility of XBMC support as a front end? on: May 05, 2009, 10:42:17 pm
I'll try it out.

BTW, there are some XBMC spinoffs, Mediaportal and Boxee.  Based on this thread:
http://forum.team-mediaportal.com/asio-music-player-245/asio-music-player-plugin-28046/

It looks like the Mediaportal team may have done even more to make it easier to integrate a third party audio engine as a plugin.

Media Portal (2) is my favourite. That was the plugin i was using before v1.0
They screwed up something in the final 1.0 version, asio make an unrecovable error, so it was worthless, but 2.0 is being developed with a much better architecture.

A xxengine3 plugin would be excellent, as well as maybe skinning xxhe.
597  Ultimate Audio Playback / Music Storage and convenient playback / Re: cant live without foobar.. on: May 05, 2009, 10:39:45 pm
Have you thought about perhaps a little program that accepts output from foobar and then let xxhighend decode over network? this would be the optimal thing for those with a dedicated music machine, couse once you've mastered foobar there is really no going back and i figure it will take some 2-3 years before xxhighend gets the same usability.

I think (hope?) it will take less, but xxhe needs improvement in the usability region.
At the moment Peter is focusing on functionalities, some of which lacks in any other software.
Give him some time.

Besides, i think that foobar has NOT the best interface. Take Media Portal, with pureaudio plugin. Thousands better interface, readable with a SMALL handheld device, which foobar isn't. Something like XBMC or any of those media centers, have already the best interface for being read from a small lcd or a handleld (such as my viewsonic panel).

I think that in the shorter time, skinning will help (such as media monkey).

Telstar, no ... but you may be missing the -4 vs. 4 ?

Yes, I did.
I have one more comparison request then Happy

+4 attended vs +4 unattended Happy
