14701  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: How .9u Sounds on: February 18, 2008, 12:20:49 am
Gerard,

I'm sure you are familiar with playing "your" so called good music at a birthday party etc. Then, when the big day is there you play those carefully selected tracks, and there you are ... uh-ohh ... doesn't that disturb ? second is that someone asks you to put the volume down. Of course you don't want that but you agree anyway. That someone actually is right ...

Now, not that I recently bumped into such a situation, but it is the very first time in my life that this whole evening the music is playing (not loud) and I don't even notice it while being behind the computer screen. By this I can tell that something is very very different.
When I pay attention to the music playing I hear everything indeed, and when I do not pay attention, nothing disturbs me ... I don't hear anything.
My wife tells me the same without asking.

The mind peace experience !

Here is a most crazy observation (don't laugh) : Besides I ask our 9 year old son to tell me when he hears "anomalies" in high frequencies which he might be able to capture while I myself am not capable of anymore because of, say, old age (which he indeed tells if so), I can "measure" him as a device when the music plays right. He swings it out like a young kid can do ...
Well, at least for some 3 hours each evening the music blasts through the room here, and exactly since 0.9u is playing here he seems to be the most swinging man on this earth. Such a kid is not under any control ...

For Dave (SeVeRd) : try it out on your daughter. secret

Thank you Edward. I will look into this and hope to solve it. aggressive

Glad that it works Manu.
Enjoy !

GerardA, no problem !

Edward ... I'm puzzled. Q: Are you sure that your mentioned messages are not caused by the long(er) waiting because of the messages you so nicely copied into here ? So, supposed you clicked away the "UNSUPPORTED FORMAT" messages (at 32 bits ... I know, you did not mention them there) within a few seconds, would you still get the message "No Track given" etc. ? I know you are accurate, but please confirm, *and* whether you can copy this repeatedly. Somehow I can't trace something like this in the code ...

Thanks.

EDIT: When i do it like this 24/192 and do not check one of the below two boxes ( 24 bits not tested and 32 most often) it works and play's.... Is this the best thing/way to go? And can i  leave it always like this?

Gerard,

When it plays it's always good. It may be confusing, but those settings are unrelated to sound quality for starters. BUT :

... and I am sorry to be so much confusing now ...

When you have a > 16 bits soundcard anyway, and you are satisfied with that, you can squeeze more out of it with the Digital Volume Control. So, only when you set either 24 bits or 32 bits *if it works for your soundcard* you are able to use the Volume Control for the better. "Infinitly better" that is ...
So again :

No !! Not if you are playing 16 bit files.
The fact that you chose 24/192 does nothing but (theoretically) allow you to play 24/192 files (which is not even supported yet).

For now Gerard (and everyone), if you slide the Volume Slider down to, say, -60dB, you will hear distortion with your ear in the speaker. When it works, with the 24 or 32 button ticked you will not hear any distortion up till -114dB (or less -> -120dB is where I don't hear anything anymore).

Oh dear ...

I still have it, but never got around getting to know that "stupid" mixer except for using it in the synthesizer environment (ProteusX or whatever). So ... I was *not* able to get any sound from it by CD playback means. I guess it is better to just not install that mixer thing and let one or the other legacy driver to the job. I did try that for an hour myself, but gave up on that too soon maybe. Now I don't even know how to get rid of that mixer.

Sorry !
(but it's a rather OK and affordable 192/24 card ...)
14707  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: For those with too much gain and 0.9u ... on: February 17, 2008, 09:53:43 pm
Oh Dave ...

I did not know that you used a setup like that.

Quote
(of course someday peter is going to allow me to get rid of this when he adds xover control to XXHE... aren't you Peter hehe)

Well, since this is one of my own goals, you bet I will. Some day ...
But this is way difficult (for me) and it needs the FIR filters that will, say, hold back on SQ as I expect it. But net ... I expect it to be better anyway. Difficult though anyway ...

Ok. You could say that the least that resistor has to hold back, the better it is.
Let's see first how *you* perceive the proposed setup. If it works for you for the better (maybe not 100%) we know it's worth while. It will be true that in the end all things have to "communicate" so indeed you might encounter that things are worse than before. Otoh, I don't see the difference with the "pile" of resistors my XOvers (still) have ... But maybe that's in another leage because it is consistent within itself (the loudspeaker as a whole fed by one "different" means only).

Anyway, anxious to know what you learn from this ...

Hi GerardA,

Are you sure ?

I changed the setting to 32 bits (most often) and got some new messages and it started to play.

Anyway that's what you told in "your" topic. This can't be with the "DAC is" set to 16 bits ... :

With 16bit/44kHz I can not choose the 32 bit option, with 24/96 it is possible, maybe a small change for this?

14709  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / For those with too much gain and 0.9u ... on: February 17, 2008, 02:12:00 pm
... do NOT solve this by means of a resistor of any kind now matter how good you think it is. It will immediately destroy everything.

In the mean time let me work on the next project : allow for more attenuation with the same number of bits.
Can I do that ?
14710  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Can't play with Terratec phase 24FW on: February 17, 2008, 02:08:57 pm
Ok, this is what I expected. Now you only don't "need" those messages. BUT : they will stay in, because actually you want Exclusive Mode.

Now on this point currently I'm lost, because there would be no real reason that I know of that Exclusive Mode is not allowed, while Shared Mode is. The only thing which might help is the information on what Shared Mode actually uses. The big point is : it should be using the data in that 2|16|44100|176400|4 message, which just is the right data. If you have any means to check it, ... please tell me.

At this point you should try a native 96/24 file (buy one from Linn for a few euri if you don't have any) and let me know what happens.
If this works in Exclusive Mode I'd know that there must be some setting I can emulate (which would come down to Doubling and 16 to 24 which is *not* in there yet).

Actually I don't see the difference (apart from messages)

I was just thinking ... do you still have the proper bitrate etc. (I mean, like before when it worked !) selected in the Sound Device's properties - Advanced ?
And, is that Sound Device still the Primary Device ?

Of course we are not heading for Shared Mode playback, but at least it should do what it did before ...
14712  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Can't play with Terratec phase 24FW on: February 17, 2008, 12:41:51 pm
Actually I don't see the difference (apart from messages) when you

a. Set the "Dac is" to 44.1/16;
b. Set the volume to -0dB;
c. Play 44.1/16 files.

Did you try that ? (but 0.9u-0a please)
14713  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Can't play with Terratec phase 24FW on: February 17, 2008, 12:35:28 pm
It shouldn't differ, but with 0.9u-0a it's the same I suppose ?

Thank you very much Brent. I see now that I did something wrong.

Please try below .exx. Put it in your current XX folder, (move away the old one) and rename it to .exe. Then try again.

The thing i also nodiced was that there is peace in the room.

This is a great description which I noticed myself in the exact same way. Somehow you "need" a description for it which actually does not exist (so far). "Peace" is what came to our mind in this house ...

Mind you, I think this goes along with this (and I referred to it in the Releasenotes by the too low volume not being important anymore) : actually somehow it doesn't matter anymore how loud things play. The "peace" I think is derived from that. Something like "no need to change things".

But wait a minute ... did I say I was ready ?
