Well the least small mistake you make is that folder is equal to "map" hence directory, which is unrelated to data in a directory versus meta data in a directory, because all is data. If you'd compare with normal explorer functions, you'll see that exactly the same is happening, including the reappearance of all once you would set it to save for a next startup. Look at below picture for how my explorer on this particular starts up, with MyComputer selected, the contents shown at the right, but the first level of the selection at the left just the same.

The difference with normal explorer is that you can set it like my example below, but if you want it different, you have to change the settings. XX just remembers what you did last and re-selects that at a next startup. Note : select is click on that first entry behind the plus/min, might it be a folder icon, drive icon anything. Nothing is related to selecting in the right pane. Not in normal Explorer, not in XX.

Hi Gerard,

What you presumeably do, is click on the folder, in your case Easy Listening. That click, causes the path to be contained in the "path field" at the bottom. Look and see how indeed "Easy Listening" is contained in there too. Now, what happens when you click that folder (and I am NOT talking about opening it), is that the system performs a click on the Search button as well, that by itself causing the contents of the Library Area to narrow to Easy Listening (whatever that is in your case Happy), and which is exactly equal to what the Embedded Explorer shows (btw not in your pictures, because you scrolled down a bit).
Now, the Explorer shows always one level lower than what was selected (clicked !), which IMO is the obvious thing to do, otherwise you'd never be able to drill down. no.

What you "forget" is to click on your GALLERIES, once you clicked on one of the lower folders. If you do that, it will come back with the opened "GALLERIES", and nothing else, but I think it wil bold the one ... hahaha, now I don't know.

Maybe I'm too unexperience myself to know what I brew there. I will look into it.

OK Peter

One small problem, can you remind me (us) how to capture the image and post it scratching

Cheers Chris

A program like SnagIt is most convenient, but not free (I suppose it has a trial period).
If you are really in need, various combinations with ctrl, shift, alt (?) and the PrintScreen button. This copies parts of the screen (depending on the key combinaton used) to the clipboard, and from there on you can struggle further to get it into something you can attach here. Happy

14810  Ultimate Audio Playback / Music Storage and convenient playback / Re: The Memory player on: January 21, 2008, 11:05:48 am
Ok. I feel the urge to respond to this all, but I'm not sure I can have a real contribution. Just hunches, and those appear all so often to be right afterwards ... Fishy

About shutting down services and all ... no doubts. They help. About the hardware stuff ... hmm ...

It is my hunch that they help creating some consistent situation for an in fact further fixed environment. Think of a certain type of memory producing better results (SQ) when the other stuff is left alone, but when you e.g. change the PSU you'd have to again find the best memory. Note that I never tried, but I do know what XXHighEnd is doing ...

It is my hunch that whatever you do with the hardware, can be incurred for by software too, which in this case would be the Q1 slider. So what I say is, that when you found the best memory in your environment, this "other" memory can have the same results but with another Q1 setting.

Without reading all what is written on AA about these kind of things, I wonder what the explanation of guys with some insight in this would be. Maybe it all has been worked out, but I doubt it, because I think you cannot have the explanation. And mind you, a better PSU, less consuming memory, better physical stability ... I don't dig that. I mean, not without the good explanation to it. Not when your DAC is at the other end of a USB cable.

In the end there sure *is* an explanation, accepting that it matters indeed (SQ changes). So, personally I don't need proof of that.
My point is, that real explanation would be the same explanation I have, then caused by software.

That's it. My contribution. Not worth much, right ?
heat Cool

Great Chris !

I suggest the following : Put the graphs from your machine into here, and I will produce the same graphs so we can compare. As you know my system has no dropouts/glitches (apart from two in twoi months) so we must be able to find the (dis)similarities.

You are first !
And for others with problems : please go ahead too.

14812  Ultimate Audio Playback / Download Area and Release Notes / XXHighEnd Model 0.9t-6 (adds Embedded Explorer) on: January 21, 2008, 02:01:12 am
So many things have been changed that testing the combinations could be endless. Please report any anomalies which were not there before. Thanks !

The following changed have been applied :

  • Support for "Play Each" for Cue file tracks.
    Actually this isn't quite finished to the matter of it working allright by itself, but working out to a change of running out of memory which just was encountered before putting up ths version;
Cue file Albums are loaded into memory in full, and the memory management as applied now causes a full new Album loaded per track (that's what "Play each" would come down to) to stress that management. With Invert checked even more.
The solution is to not load the full Album, but to withold the upload of this version seemed a waste.

  • A new Icon / logo was added; The icon files have been removed from the "install".
Currently for Vista the icon won't show in explorer at the larger views.

  • In the Library Area a "D" button has been added. It allows for finding Albums by means of their date ripped.
Note that this feature is not finished, and it won't combine properly with other search features.
Important : the form brought up after pressing this button currently defaults to today for both Start and End Date; note that would find today's ripped Albums only !

  • Going along with the previous, the Date/Time of ripping will be showed behind the Album Name (Library Area).
Because this Album Name data is sensitive to Active Search (typing in the text field next to the Search button), within the selection as implied by the "D" button, Albums of a certain date can be found by means of typing the date in the format as shown.

  • When the Library Area is active, the left pane now shows an embedded Explorer (see picture below);
Important : Since this Explorer is the very same as the normal Explorer, a.o. it Deletes as usual !
Currently only basic features can be applied with it, but in future versions many more will emerge from it. Also see below topics.

  • Although you could decend down to the Track data with the Embedded Explorer, for XXHighEnd matters nothing else with the Track Data can be done than view it. This means shown individual Tracks can not be loaded from there.
Note that rightclick on a track in there incurs for "Play with" (player) when you have players around like WMP. No XX there ! (yet).

  • The Music Galery Root has been removed from the Settings Area;
The Music Root from the Settings Area now determines the root of the embedded Explorer. In the picture below this was D:\Galeries.
Note that the picture shows "AllMusic" in bold coming from the fact that that folder was clicked; Look at the bottom text field, where you also can see the "\AllMusic" behind the D:\Galeries. It's the same as any folder clicked in the Embedded Explorer. Now note :
Looking at the structure as shown it is not the intention that you click "deeper". In other words, when you open a folder by means of clicking at the plus sign, underlaying folders appear, and you could click those just as well. When you do, the result list in the Library Area would be narrowed to that. Very convenient ? maybe ... As long as you know that therewith the main result list is reset to that, and when you'd want to go up again and click AllMusic in order to get all again, you'd have to wait for all (again).

But there's another convenient feature going along with this :  When underneath your AllMusic is referred to "type roots" like "Jazz" or "Rock" which just emerged from the physical data structure (and with which not explicitly added Galery folders are meant), yes, *then* it's a very good idea to find that "type root" and open it. It would narrow your results to that type of music.

There's more to explain, but with this as the basics, try to get the grasp of it. BUT, if you think things could work more conveniently or more intuively, please let know !

  • In the Search Field a backslash (\) is allowed now.

  • Although pressing the Search Button actually is needed only to set a result list fort the first time, from then on going along with Active Search (typing in the textfield is enough), - but also see ebove - it hands you the conveniency of seeing where you are in the data structure, because the Embedded Explorer will show you where you are then.

  • A small issue in between : When the data from the Music Root field in the Settings Area is not consistent with the data in the bottom text field from the Library Area, i.e. the beginning of the Library Root is not contained in that bottom field, you'll see that Album data is cut at the left in the result list. Note you can incur for this already by just typing in mentioned bottom field.

  • On some systems it could occur that no coveart picture was shown in the left pane at the standard (640 x 480) size of the player. This is solved.

  • When XXHighEnd is brought up after a last Off (quit), the Library Area will show the same result as at that Off, even if the result was from Active Search (typing in the text field next to the Search button);
When this doesn't seem to work, remove one character from the shown "typed" search data, and add it again.
When it seems dead, restart XX.
Note : After startup, uUntil a text-copy operation is performed, the clipboard contains the data for Active Search, hence with Ctrl-V the search data can be pasted into the text field when needed.

  • An error would occur in ChangeWP.exe when the coverart is shown as Wallpaper (see Settings Area), and the album would recide on drive C: or X:. This is solved.
Note : presumeably ChangeWP still errors out when a space is contained in the Share Name of the drive where the Album recides. So far this must be taken as unsolveable.

  • Loading data during playback would cause the last track loaded (at one of these activities) to get selected. That, together with the playing track also being selected would cause that to be seen as playing a selection, incurring for playback to commence at that selected track, and to stop playing rigt after that.
Current issue : something else (still) causes that loading tracks during playback will not start playing those new tracks anyway. unhappy

  • Playing a selection has been recovered (in early versions that just worked). Cue files included now (those never worked before from a selection).
Keep in mind (for those who never saw this working) : The top most Selected track is always playing; As soon as a track finished playing, it gets unselected.

  • Selected Tracks will be retained at Off (quit) and will be shown as such at a next startup;
This implies that with UnAttened Playback also Selections can be used, and bringing up XX and pressing Next will incur for the next Selected Track to be played.
Note : It might be so that the showing of the Selected Tracks at bringing up XX again (UnAttended Playback) is not 100% decent, and that the first track shown is not the Playing one as intended.
With UnAttended Playback always a (before) Selected Track will show at the top. Thus, when Tracks, 2, 5, 8 and 10 were Selected, during the Playback of 2, 2 shows at the top, and when 5 starts playing, 5 is at the top (and never 3, or 4).

  • When a selected portion of tracks was deleted from the Playlist Area, the last clicked (due to selecting) would appear selected after a next load of tracks. This is solved.

  • When Cue file tracks were loaded in the Playlist Area, and a second or further track was playing while Clear was clicked, the full WAV file would appear as the only track left. Solved.

  • Depending on the activity, often the first track in the Playlist Area got selected unwanted. Solved.

  • When two Tracks with the same name and all were in the Playlist Area, the second would cause playback to commence at the first again (and in fact things got in a loop). Solved.

  • Added the auto-selection of the first track in the Playlist Area at various "load tracks" situations.

Issue found (is already for more versions present) : When a track is added to a Galery from within the Playlist Area (rightclick etc.) a second time, hence XX knows where to put it from a before selection, the track will not be added. This can be seen by the fact that nothing like "n tracks added to Galery" is shown.

Telstar,

Any opinions using USB vs. SPDIF using the TwinDAC+ ?

F.ex. the program crashes and starts another XX sometimes when I'm playing attended and is into the Library Button on the far left, adding tracks to the ongoing playlist etc. etc.

That's a known one and is caused by the "modal" Open Dialog box. Do you have a special reason to use that ? I mean, why not using Explorer ?

I think in a next version the Open button will be removed anyway. I don't see the use of it anymore, which of course is related to the latest version you don't have yet. Happy
0.9t-6 will be up today. Quite a few bugs have been solved in there; many take over a day to work out. yes

Now Chris, what about your judgements on os vs. nos ?

Try Yello, or trumpets or anything of which you think you could perceive "squareish" sound. But also the other way around : a flute should not become a trumpet !

14818  Ultimate Audio Playback / Music Storage and convenient playback / Re: Touch screen LCD cases and XXHE on: January 17, 2008, 04:16:19 am
I have two responses that seem not much related, but they are. The first may look kind of stupid and hard to judge for the real merits :

The Library functions of XXHighEnd and the Galeries in special, are created with one thing in mind : a huge amount of data to be managed. "Huge" means several thousands of albums Explorer already can't handle because of the time it takes. So whatever front-end you want to use, anticipate on these amounts. I do / XX does, and it does it explicitly. "Manage" means that you can deal with it for functional reasons, and only when you have thousands of albums loaded, you can start to see what I mean with that and it is from various angles (like what to pick, where to store, how to find, how to backup and a few more).
The necessary speed of it all is already a bottleneck for everything, although I did not examine other software, but I think I know.

The power of the Galeries is so enormous that I dare say only two or three of you out there know what can be done with it, and added to that even I myself don't know yet how to exploit it all best, the latter because of it being so generic for possibilities.
Note that to my own findings the Library functions are just in their beginnings, and a next very powerful main feauture (encouraging for much more) you see in below picture (from the due 0.9t-6).

What you will see in the future, and what you might have learned from the past, is that there really is nothing I don't listen to, and eventually whatever it is one asked for is implemented. Mind you, unless "we" explicitly talked about it, and when I, say, can prove it isn't worth much. So here is the stupid part :

When to my judgement XXHighEnd is far better in whatever area than anything else, or I know because of developments to come that it will, there is no reason to spend time on "interfacing" with other software. Mind you, there is no reason for *me*. Going along with it, is the logic of better spending the time on the functionality (etc.) this other software might be better at, than spending time on that interface, knowing that XX will be as good on the matter concerned, might it be sooner or later.

Again, this sounds stupid but it is my strategy anyway. Not enough time to do it otherwise !
Let me try to give an example of which I hope I won't offend anywone but the developer who seems to be vanished anyway :
People exist who like MP3Toys as a front end. So there's the question : could XX not be controlled by it (because Foobar can and blahblahblah). So yes, I could make that. But man, software like that is so much outside my own standards (for decency) by far that I would degrade myself (or (future) XX) by doing it. So I don't already for that reason. More important though is that those who want/use MP3Toys, apparently don't see the "problems" you'd have when using that instead of XX itself, all ending up in me solving those problems which really aren't of my interest apart from you being that customer of mine. Also, I *know* that interfaces are the most hard to create and maintain, and most often something not working anymore is beyond both parties knowlegde and blame (like : "hey, it doesn't work with Vista SP1 !").

I know, a command line interface doesn't seem much (work), but when it's there it should be there for the good reasons. In fact I can tell you it's already there, but the means to exploit it for *my* reasons are not, and that's why you don't have it. At the time it is freed to you, yes, you could use it to let front end software control XX, but let's say that's a coincidence and it won't be supported.

Coming to the second part of my response, and I think this is less stupid, my before mentioned "good reasons" would be remote control, and might you not know, this is a whole world of knowledge and experience in itself. Since you mention Girder it might be so that you have good experiences with that in the HTPC/Movie environment, where btw 50% of my roots are too. The very major difference is though, that with movies you have OSDs (On screen Display) and you can see what yo are doing. Audio playback however, inheretantly works with the smallest device possible, that coincidentally being very close to you otherwise you can't see anything, that by itself urging for touching the screen since it is under your nose anyway. too much !

Now what ?!

This is a subject I couldn't work out so far myself. I do try though, if you'd only know that the Asus mentioned earlier in this thread is one of the attempts to find out, a Philips Pronto is another (talking about costs swoon) and yesterday the postman brought a Harmony.
At this moment I think it comes down to a most simple form : infrared remote control with any random generic programmable remote (think of Harmony like devices), and XX accepting commands as smart as we can all think of. How that makes us selecting albums/tracks without a visual ... scratching ... but if you'd compare it with a normal CDP, well, then yes.

With this rather unnecessary long response, the least I could do is indicate that I don't know it myself, at all. Any ideas are welcome for that matter. I'm sure everyone has ideas, so please vent ! Might I not respond to one, please know that I do read and take into account all. In the end there will be something I guess ...

On another note, I think what he is doing in the base is right.

Edward, at writing this I wanted to eloborate and emphasize more on his hardware ideas, but forgot. Also, I wanted that piece of my text softening my earlier remarks, but since I lacked in mentioning the examples, that did not happen. Things are out of balance now in a direction not justified. blush1

That this caused Telstar to be challenged to call things ridiculous and silly is just my fault because I created the atmosphere, though unintentionally as said. If I need to take back more I will, but not including the way your PC gets more or less destroyed if you only try this software like you would try any software. If you're not the best in computers it would render your PC worthless, just because not knowing, or not paying all that much attention on what to do in order to go back to normal once you'e in "cMP mode". But let's say I don't even know that, noticing my cookies disappeared and decoders got unregistered or not working otherwise.

On could call it "silly" (and I don't think this english word necessarily is a negative) to go through all the trouble on the hardware side from the perspective of better sound. However, once you dive into the matter and judge the findings (which seem to be cics' findings for a great deal ?), it may be nothing less than the future route to the best playback possible for SQ, including memory sims using less Watts to name one. But me spending thousands of hours on "memory playback" is as silly the least. Some people are just enthusiasts ...

Maybe worthy to tell, is the funny thing of me being the first responding to that thread when it was posted the first time, where I was rather politely telling that maybe there should be a big warning sign for people with not all that much computer knowledge. I started my response with "Maybe out of all it should not be me responding here as the first", and I ended with "If I could not see your dedication and enthusiasm I would think this is a hoax. But I do see, so I know it is not". That got deleted with the thread ...
