[...] conclusion that Vista sounds best, is more stable and run as long tracks as you ever wants. I think?

No difference in stability, and no difference in the running time for the demo version. Remember Gerner, 0.7d.

Quote
I can provoke the XX to stop sounding or play several tracks at the same time by clicking "NEXT" immediately after it starts. I did that when just browsing tracks for finding relevant music for my Ipod.

No rules here. But you could be banned for that !  Cry Ipod ... djzzzz

I'm almost sure you run another version ...

15679  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Vista no go on: May 29, 2007, 07:18:58 pm
Hi Jack,

Glad you got it working. It was my incomplete outlay why it didn't the first time ...

Quote
Reading your help file suggests that my 'best' option for now is XP running on engine 1 with doubling enabled or not depending on taste.

By itself this is true, BUT, please read this alinea from it :

This #1 Engine is dedicated to bitperfect playback for XP.
It makes use of non-certified audio drivers, like the MME drivers from RME.

Actually this tells that you need an RME Fireface or other soundcard from RME that uses "illegal" drivers, bypassing KMixer. These drivers are bitperfect.
More brands will exist, but I don't know (anymore) which.

Edit :  scratching Actually, Doubling is not possible for Engine#1 ! (the help file neatly tells that Tongue)

Quote
For your information, Iv'e not had any instability issues in either OS or engine

... which should tell me that you *have* such a driver ...
Important test : can you run tracks larger than, say, 6 minutes 20 seconds, or IOW 64MB ?

Quote
I must remember to pick shorter tracks though!

This is unrelated Jack. It's just the running time.

Quote
if YOU had the copy of XX that Iv'e got would YOU load XP or Vista?

Definitely Vista. More detail, more fine, more stable over different CDs.
But why don't install a dual boot if you have to go from the beginning anyway ? then you can choose ... prankster

But please NOTE : My choice for Vista, is because I left behind the instable XP RME drivers as mentioned. If you have something stable under Engine#1 which is bitperfect at the same time and plays tracks over 64MB ... from theory follows that would be my first choice.
Note : "instable" means : running the player, start something else, and select back (Alt-Tab etc.) the player. Then it stops making sound ... with over 64MB files for 99% sure, with smaller ones, say, 50%.

15680  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: 100% on: May 29, 2007, 11:39:44 am
The only thing I can say is that lately we do one thing only : looking (listening) for wrong / unnatural playback of voices and instruments and all.
Currently we are *very* satisfied. Note that this is XXHighend/Vista/Engine#1/96K, and the Orphean/BD15/MKII. The latter is probably the most important. As a bonus the BDCrazyA is used, adding spooky air to it all, and making you see the shivering of cymbals.

We are now *really* in the stadium of comparing music playback to the real voices and instruments, and therefore we are close to comparing by absolute means ! Close or just there. grazy  Currently it is very hard to tell what can be a next step. Oh, I know one : Vista/Engine#3, which currently makes too much of all (mainly dynamics), of which I am sure that this is "limited" by means we did not find yet.

We'll see !
15681  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: 100% on: May 28, 2007, 11:21:40 pm
Personally I don't think that is possible, although I sure hope to get close with the complete chain as how it is now (XX, good nos-DAC, BDCrazyA, Orphean/BD15 MKII) ...
Here was one explicit test we applied : http://forum.bd-design.nl/board_entry.php?id=13600#p13611 with one of the D amps we had at that time.

But why do you say this Klaus ? smile
15682  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: .net and usb-audio.com driver issues on: May 28, 2007, 11:05:30 pm

1.
On my english Windows NT I didn't have any problems to
get XX up'n running (without sound output).
On my german XP I never managed to start XX up. It got killed right after
I accepted the DEMO Window. It must have something to do with the .net setup I guess.
Any ideas?

Klaus,

You didn't solve this I guess ?

But do you really mean Windows-NT ?
If yes, I guess that you don't have DirectX 9.0c running on that ? (if not DirectX10 is needed  dntknw blush1)

Adrian,

Could you try to install the DirectX thing behind the Zip in the attachment below, and let me now whether it helped ?!
Your PC has to be connected to the Internet when this is performed ...

Yes Gerner, this area has been especially created for you. Well, anyone could have guessed that !

The fellow you are referring to must be a serbian waiter pooring too few cognac. In "your" beautiful  country I'm sure there's only one of his kind.
Man, what did I love the food and drinks !
Especially loved the situation that Serbia won the Eurovision Song XXO Contest ! hahaha

Hi Klaus !

Very nice to meet you here !!

I must dive into your issues, but for the USB thing : I recall that the USB.DE driver is mutuallay exclusive to the legacy USB (MS) driver. So yes. you'd have to uninstall the .DE (.COM) driver.

XX does not support ASIO (just because it is not better  Happy).

It isn't difficult to try though, and the .DE is reinstalled very easily.
Please let me know the results !

Hi Jack,

Sorry to hear that, but, kind of expected.  unhappy

What is your "first window" ?
Any error messages ?

15690  Ultimate Audio Playback / Download Area and Release Notes / Demo version, Install notes and getting an Activation Key on: May 25, 2007, 04:26:47 pm

What you download from this board (the XXHighEnd-x.xx.zip files)  is a fully working demo version, only limited in playing time per session (the GUI will disappear anywhere between 6 and 60 minutes, randomly, or playback will just stop otherwise; you may think the program "crashes"); When you've got an Activation Key your demo version will have turned into a normal licensed version for your household with unlimited playing time.

Edit : But since 0.9m for a demo install there's no possibility for Processor Core Appointment.
Edit : Since 0.9n for a demo install there's a restriction on the number of output result items (100) for the Library functions.

Install

Download the Zip at the very bottom from any of the Releasenote topics on this board (best practice is to use the last/newest one Happy). Example of an old one : XXHighEnd Model 0.9v-1 (Support for Vista/64 and more). Now look at the very bottom of this example download page for the zip file. Remember, this is just an example, and the newest version will be in the topmost non-sticky topic (the yellow ones, not the orange ones).

Save the zip and Unzip it to any directory you like, create a shortcut from the XXHighEnd.exe from there (Explorer, Rightclick on the Exe and Send to desktop) and attach an icon to the new shortcut (rightclick on the shortcut, Properties, Shortcut tab, Change Icon, Browse). Use XXHighEndXP.ico for XP and XXHighEndVista.ico for Vista ...
Note that the XXEngine3.exe is an internal program, used by XXHighEnd.
You might want to have a look at : Installation guide for Dummies.
But in any case, look here : Vista Users ... prepare yourselves ... which also counts for W2008 and W7 users, and tells you about the necessity to run XXHighEnd with uplevelled rights ("as administrator"). Omit this, and you *will* have problems.

Start playing (but see below).

There will be no explicit changes to the Registry, apart from a small harmless OCX needed for the GUI (you will see an install passing by for that).
Notice that it is of great importance that all the programs you see passing by to run when you start XXHighEnd for the first time, are answered to with "Yes , Run" and tick the box which says "do not ask me again the next time". If you omit the latter, things will be run under the hood, but you won't be able to see these little screens, nor will you be able to answer the messages.

Note :
Make a good habit of keeping a copy of all the earlier versions you downloaded and keep them accessible. It is good for comparison.
Remember that XXHighEnd is about audio quality, and in fact not about features. BUT : it won't be the first time that changing or adding a feature, degraded the sound quality.
And if that happens, I want to know !!

A demo version is the same as an Activated version (but see here at the top), and activating a version requires an Activation Code which you can obtain from within XXHighEnd at clicking the red "undemo" in the volume knob.

When you receive errors at your first playing attempts

If you are not confident with the below things, be sure you have a restore point (hence backup) at hand !

When you use Vista, W2008 or W7, there should be no need to install any additional software, hence the errors your receive (if so) must come from somewhere else. For XP (or Windows2000) the below would apply though.

Install the Dot-Net Framework 2.0 Redistributable package from here : (changed per June 8 2007 into the 2.0 version) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en

Don't forget to choose the language of your OS, or otherwise it won't work !

When you want to run Engine #3 when it's available, you'd need Vista and additionally need the DotNet Framework 3.0 redistributable :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=10cc340b-f857-4a14-83f5-25634c3bf043&DisplayLang=en
But : Carefully read this excerpt from the page I just referred to :

The .NET Framework 3.0 is included as part of the Windows Vista™ operating system; you can install it or uninstall it using Windows Features Control Panel.

which would imply you would already have it, but that it needs to be installed as indicated.

If you still get errors and you have XP, download the zip at the bottom of this page which will get you "a" DirectX update that works for the player.
Most probably from this link you will get a more current DirectX version, and from there you might find even more current ones (I think lately the MS pages are messy).

Currently it will be a bit trial and error, but eventually there will be a decent install guide.
Note that things got rather complex (for me) after developing much of the stuff on Vista, and having it compatible for both XP and Vista at the same time. Also, since all of the PCs I own are development PCs anyway, it's a tough job testing the raw installs. Sorry !

Getting an Activation Code (72 euro, see the UnDemo section of XXHighEnd)

Important :
The license you will receive is valid for your (one) household. A household is defined as all of your PCs connected by means of a local network, one of those PCs obtaining the Activation Code (Key) over the internet.
At getting the Activation code from the internet, initiated by the PayPal button in the Undemo section of XXHighEnd, it will be the PC that gets the Activation Code that gets licensed !
It is well possible that the (or a) PC providing the audio playback as intended, is not connected to the network. In that case it is the strong advise to connect that PC temporarily to the network anyway, *or* connect that PC temporarily to the internet at obtaining the Activation Code. If you do not do so, you may end up with a license for the "wrong" PC (while you are entitled to use them all ...).
Whether your Audio Playback PC will be allright for a license - when you do not use that PC to get the Activation Code from the internet - can be tested by looking at the Audio Playback PC(s) under "My Network Places", and if you can see the PC that *wil* get the Activation Code (assumed that harddisks of the internet PC are shared). If you know the both PCs can see eachother once they are connected to the local network, you should be okay.

(do note that when your Audio Playback PC would be permanently connected to the local network, this does *not* influence audio quality that I know of)

In order to use PayPal you do not need a PayPal account; a credit card is sufficient.
Carefully read the pages that the PayPal procedure present, and never cross away such a page. It may prevent the email with your Activation Code being sent.
But if you do not receive that email, which should be within seconds, there's a manual procedure as a backup, and waiting for that procedure should never be longer than 10 hours. Before that period has passed you may post about it if that makes you confident, but it really is not necessary.
