226  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Split file size and volume on: July 15, 2012, 05:45:53 am
What seems to be working best for me with a Wyred DAC2 is buffer=2048, Q1=14, SFS=2 and yes its definitely more musical and detailed.  An important difference is that I'm using Normal mode of Engine #4.

The 2048 buffer size may have to do with my use of 2x or 4x upsampling (rather than 8 or 16 as others are using).  Also, I'm now using PE and AP or at least AP + Minimize OS.   None of this is reflected yet in sig (at the time of this post).

So this works on a non-Phasure DAC.
227  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Where are we with Peak Extend and Arc Prediction with .9z-6-1c? on: July 14, 2012, 10:50:42 pm
I could not find it by searching so I have to ask.  Thanks.

I remember reading that PE must be used with AP right now (.9z-6-1c), else PE does nothing.

Is that correct?

(I ask also because I also remember reading that one user prefers AP without PExtend....  so I'm really confused.)

(btw I'm also trying SFS=2 today, so far so good)

Ah, okay, great.  Thanks

Looking forward to the release of z7

From your signature, I am sure you can explore more and achieve better result. Arc prediction is a unique feature of XXHE that you should try. Almost all folks here run W7 already.

Thanks Praphan.

Actually, I started with arc prediction and have since landed on the settings in my signature line.  I plan to post about this in a separate thread once I get some time.

Peter

Your software sounds so good that I owe you more than the currency I paid.   Hence this testimonial.

I thought JRiver sounded just fine.  Then I was compelled to try xxHE just because I could.  Eventually I purchased it and I was able to tweak the sound enough to slowly track improvments.

Now I've reached an amazing plateau:  With my current settings, 44.1/16 sounds so good that it is difficult to tell the difference between 44.1 and HiRes versions of the Norah Jones Come Away with Me release.  Further, in some other cases I even prefer the 44.1 over the HiRes release.

In many cases, I prefer the sonics of HiRes, but even in these cases, the 44.1 material can be more engaging even if the sonics are inferior.

The sound is smooth and very analog like using a Wyred 4 Sound DAC2 through its USB input, yet amazingly detailed.  Things just sound right and true.

Congratulations  clapping clapping good Good job ! thankyou

I look forward to .9z-7 for at least its functionality.  I hope that if I keep my settings, it does not alter the sound because I need the functionality enhancements but don't want to jeapordize the sound.   I say that  because I've seen that little supposedly insignificant changes make big differences.  This is tricky business and you've given us a fantastic tool to deal with that trickyness.
231  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: For z8 only --> intermediate tracks do not finish playing on: June 10, 2012, 03:39:37 am
Well, okay.   Then issue 0.9z-7.   Wink

BTW, just now it happened again with 44.1 material that was HDCD pre-converted.  So it was 44.1/24.  Same problem.

Thus, this problem follows the 24 bits, not the 88.2 or 96 etc. or higher sample rates.

Here you are.  I zipped all of the log files into one zip file and I'll let you figure out which are the right ones to peek into.

The pattern for these log files is HiRes playback.  Ctrl-click of four tracks, non-consecutive, then hit play.  First song played okay.  Second song skipped after about 1 minute.  Then I stopped playback and returned to Attended mode.

Thanks again Russ.  Looks like True Image did much better in that review.  I'll also check out cloneZilla.

Actually, the version of Ghost that I have is 9.0 and I don't see an option to create recovery media, neither from Start->Programs nor from within the Ghost application.

The help file says:

When restoring a computer in the recovery environment you must use the Norton Ghost CD or Symantec Recovery Disk (available with Norton SystemWorks Premier) to first boot into the recovery environment.

Dead in the water?
235  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: For z8 only --> intermediate tracks do not finish playing on: June 08, 2012, 01:10:54 am
Last night it happened again several times.  Each time, it started on the 2nd chosen track, either by Ctrl-click or Shft-click.

However, both times it occurred with HiRes files.

I read above that with HiRes this is a known issue.  Therefore, I am waiting for it to happen with 44.1 material and when that happens I will report with log files.

Wow!  That's extremely helpful.  Thanks Russ.
237  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Minimus Mode and USB detection on: June 07, 2012, 12:57:45 am
Thanks Russ.  thankyou   I presume then that I would have to install Ghost on the audio PC to do this?

Create a bootable Ghost recovery disc and try it on your C drive, then run the validate process at completion.

I didn't know I could do that.  So I can do a validate without actually doing a restore?  (..which could fail)

And to do the validate, do I start from the recovery disc?  ..or from the installed Ghost software on C:?
238  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: For z8 only --> intermediate tracks do not finish playing on: June 05, 2012, 11:04:13 pm
New data point.  New clue.

Last night I selected only a single track about 1/3rd the way down the playlist; then I hit play (unattended).

When this type of selection is done, it is a feature that XX sucks the remaining tracks into memory until the end of the playlist;  ..in this case about another 8 tracks.

Well, not on the first song, but on about the third song XX abruptly skipped to the fourth song about a minute or two (on a typical 4 or 5 minute song).

So  evil this is not necessarily about Ctrl-click.  We've seen it now with Shift-click, and with just selection of one track.   So what appears to be the common denominator is that this occurs when I don't start playback at the first song of the playlist maybe ?

The colors of the selcted tracks clearly look good and strong.  So I don't think this is it.  (..besides I know more now and will post immediately after this one)
240  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Minimus Mode and USB detection on: June 05, 2012, 10:50:19 pm
No.  I'm just planning and reading right now.  ..Reading about Minimus mode and how to get out of trouble.  Each night I save a new restore point in case I get the nerve to try it.   At least I copied the system drivers to another disk.

I have no original OS disc and no backup.  And I notice that Gates backup program requires that you have the original install disk, so that won't work.

I have an old version of Ghost, and doubt it works with Vista.  Anyone have any recommendations for current backup software?

I've read posts where users have gotten stuck inside of Minimize OS mode and can't get out.   I can actually live with that for a while, but I must be able to continuously add music to the music disk via USB;  hence the original post.
