1. How do I move all contents of my Nice Stuff gallery to the Show gallery?

Charlie, only with trickery I would not even be able to accomplish myself.
So say it can't.

The need for this arises because I'm interested in individual tracks, not whole albums, and my understanding is that individual tracks are handled in the Show gallery.

Re deleting duplicates...

Just delete it. Notice that under RightClick on the Library Item, there's a "More Gallery functions" option near the bottom in the context menu, and there reside the functions you seek for.

I believe I tried that and it didn't work, as tested in the past by clearing and reloading and when I reloaded, duplicates appeared regardless.  Now maybe that was a cache issue or something like I needed to exit and restart xxHE.  I will have to reconfirm.

The situation for 2 is that if I like a track I hit Alt-c.  But it turns out I do that multiple times over the course of years because I can't remember whether or not I've hit alt-c before.  So I end up with unwanted duplicates.

No, that is not how it works (or indeed you'll get mad). So I am afraid you already "manipulated" outside of XXHighEnd's functions, like copying Gallery folders or renaming them etc. etc. via Explorer.
Say that it is another subject how to get this right again. This too will be quite impossible, depending on the damaga done. Anyway ...

I never copied Gallery folders, nor renamed them, nor moved them.  However, because rightClick functions were not working, I did try to use explorer to delete some.  But that didn't work because apparently, a duplicate Gallery metadata item is also placed in the "real" folder and from that it appears that the Gallery "repairs" itself.  [Frankly I don't like the idea that the real folder is littered with these Gallery files.  I'd prefer you create a folder and within that litter all you want, preferably a hidden folder.  Even more preferred would be,  don't touch the real folders at all, or at least have an option for that.]

The real / original folders and data and their locations on the disk have always been the same and have never changed.  Yet,  the filenames of the metadata files in the Galleries for these duplicates are indeed a little bit different.   That's a cliue.  Perhaps different versions of xxHE used different naming schemes?

I conclude then, that really I should be keeping my settings in separate folders for each version.  That way the daily stuff gets put in the right place.

c:\xxHighend\2.07 indeed does exist.  That's where the .exe is.  Maybe that's where I should put the settings after all.

Regarding the blip at the initial rendering of the progress bar,  I tested 2.01 and it is in there too.

Thanks

Hi Peter

1. How do I move all contents of my Nice Stuff gallery to the Show gallery?

2. Also, how do I delete a duplicate item within a gallery?

The situation for 2 is that if I like a track I hit Alt-c.  But it turns out I do that multiple times over the course of years because I can't remember whether or not I've hit alt-c before.  So I end up with unwanted duplicates.

Perhaps there is a new setting brewing here:
  • a "De-duplicate Galleries" button?  This button can clean everything up automatically, or
  • a "Prevent duplicates" button?  This can leave galleries as they are but check to make sure that new entries don't already exist

Thanks for your consideration

Charlie
49  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Considering upgrading to 2.07 from 2.01 on: July 28, 2017, 04:31:49 pm
Couple of 2.07 questions

1. Can I restore settings to 2.07 that were saved from 2.01?

As a part of this, I notice that by default xx looks in the \xxhe folder,  which is the same as for 2.01.  But I also notice that just below in the same section of the settings dialog,  "Copy settings to" is populated with c:\xxHighend\2.07,  which seems to contradict.

Also, I note that 2.07 has settings, maybe many settings that were not present in 2.01.

2. How can eliminate a gap in playback as result of, or apparently as a result of, the first display of the progress bar in unattended mode?

It took a while to correlate the gap in sound and the progress bar, but it appears that they coincide when the progress bar is initially rendered on the display after going from the UI and hitting the play button with the mouse and into unattended mode.  Playback starts before the progress bar is rendered and then right when the progress bar is first rendered there is a gap in playback about 1/2 second long.

I've never noticed this before, but it may be because 2.07 comes configured out of the box with progress bar enabled.  Whereas with 2.01 and prior versions I was using OSD but not progress bar.  (possibly maybe this is why?)

I do prefer the progress bar or plain old OSD.

I don't think that gaps happen after the initial instance, but I'm not sure of that.

Thanks,

Charlie

OK so as I understand it, just install 2.07 directly and don't install any patches.   Correct?

Thanks,

Charlie
52  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Considering upgrading to 2.07 from 2.01 on: July 24, 2017, 12:39:23 am
Hi Peter

I've not upgraded beyond 2.01 because I have Windows 7 and don't have Tidal.

With 2.07 there is the potential for SQ improvements with Win7.  Regarding this, are SQ improvements likely?

If yes, can I upgrade to 2.07 from 2.01...  skipping all of the other versions in between?
  • this implies that I don't need the patch,  which must be applied to 2.06, which I don't have installed.

If no, can I upgrade to 2.07 from 2.01...  by first installing 2.06... skipping versions 2.02 through 2.05?

Thanks,

Charlie
53  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: With mp3 tracks are skipped on: April 23, 2016, 06:20:45 pm
Hi Peter

This is a reply to a post from June 2013.  In version 2.01,  I encounter this also with 320 Kbps mp3 and only in unattended mode.   To listen to 320 K mp3 I have to listen in attended mode.

I would say this is not urgent for me.  Nor would I ask you to put significant amount of time fixing it.  I can always listen in Attended, as mp3 losses even at 320 are far greater than what is lost in Attended mode (say my ears);  and also I rarely listen to MP3.

54  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Praise for xxHighEnd 2.01 and new filters on: July 19, 2015, 09:53:34 pm
I'd say yes.
55  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Praise for xxHighEnd 2.01 and new filters on: July 18, 2015, 10:19:35 pm
All hail the magic of 2.01 !!!   thankyou Good job !

Version 2.01 deserves special praise for the sound quality and besides the sound quality because for me it is the first version of xxHE that really really works as intended for the way I use it (mostly!).  I'm sure it has worked well for others for many years but for me it hasn't.  Now, with a few exception, everything just works.  For example:
  • Hitting alt-p after hitting alt-s or alt-e plays back correctly
  • Playback does not randomly stop after a few tracks
  • I can select tracks with control-click, skipping certain tracks or reordering tracks and it behaves exactly like playing an entire CD or folder
  • The output mode (WASAPI vs. KS) does not change at random like it used to (actually it did but it is rare now)
  • Etc.,  etc.
To me 2.01 is first version that I consider "production level" quality.  I can easily recommend it now to almost anyone.

Regarding sound quality,  2.01 with the new filters is so amazingly good that I will have to listen to my entire collection all over again.  Every single one.  It is one of those major shifts in sound reproduction.   Listening now for the first time to PCM with zero ringing is a revelation.  Recordings like Fragile by Yes that even at 96/24 sounded relatively complex, dense, and distorted before now sound simple, light, and clean.   The clarity is unbelievable.  Things I hear and never heard before are all over the place.

The reason I mentioned "PCM with zero ringing" is because, as an alternative to xxHE, I used HQPlayer to playback with DSD which has little or no ringing and DSD naturally has a slow roll off as it has all day long to attenuate down by 5 Mhz (2xDSD).  That also sounds very good.  But the sound is relatively distant and less involving.

With xxHE I get a high level of immediacy and involvement.  Amazing.

I use the "High" custom filter of 384 (v2.01 has only two Custom Filter settings for 384: High and Low) and a Wyred 4 Sound DAC2 DSDse which is a 384 capable DAC.   I look forward to a Mid setting whenever it comes.

Charlie

P.S.  These comments should also apply to 2.02.  But I cannot confirm because I have not tried it.  I'm running Win7 and 2.02 appears to be more about Win10, which I'm not interested in.

Awesome.  Looking forward to hearing your filters.

To anyone subscribed to this topic, there is a new 2.01 version that now supports these filters.

In one word, they are UNBELIEVEABLE!!!!!   sounds good !

[Edit: Only as of May 31, 2015 are my settings accurate in my signature lines below,  in case anyone is interested in my settings.  They are important.]
57  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Activation for 2.01 without network connection on: May 25, 2015, 03:18:23 am
Hi Peter

I did read the two whole pages on activation again today in preparation for downloading 2.01 whenever it comes.  Sorry to ask this here but hopefully the answer will help others.  Can you confirm, yes or no, that I can activate paypal on one PC that is on the internet and can visit Paypal and then use that activation code manually on my audio PC, which is a different PC that has no network connection.

Thanks
