196  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: SPDIF Cable, longer is better! (Interesting articel) on: October 22, 2010, 05:37:30 pm
For my Hiface with BNC I tried a 10m cable with RCA's and adapters and it sounded more silky.
If you use the  RCA-fitted Hiface then 75 ohm's is impossible to achieve so then I guess a long cable is always a good option.

Another improvement is a 12- 20 dB attenuator as proposed a.o. by JKeny.
It is supposed to attenuate the reflected signals as well as the main signal but the main signal is still strong enough because the hiFace gives enough juice.
and the battery option sounds worthwile..

How about putting a Virtual Machine on RamDisk and putting Vista and XXHE in the VM?
Even allows to make more VM's for testing and comparisons!

Isn't it a setting in the BIOS?
It happened to me too a long time ago, and even the keyboard was wireless, but the bios saved my day...
USB-keyboard, USB-controller or something like that.

Hi Dan,

I tried again and the track looks to start to play but without sound for almost a halve minute and then the errors apear.
Engine #4 is ok after.

It's hard to make direct comparison if you don't have two identical PCs.
I could try myself if it wasn't for a virus bugging my right ear. unhappy
Although I think other programs sound better in Vista too.. (a.o. Dvbviewer and PowerDVD)
201  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: We all fell in the W7 pitfall on: October 06, 2010, 03:05:41 pm
Did somebody make a direct comparison between Vista/Ramdisk and W7/Ramdisk already?

(I like W7 more then Vista, more stable, less hiccups, hiFace-drivers...(?)).
Problem now is the sounddevice is not freed after an application used it.

Hi Peter,

I never heard sound from Vista/engine 3/hiFace.
The problem happens after I click play. The songs get greyed out one by one (slowly) and after track 7 nothing happens for a while and then the two messages pop up.
After that a long message and engine 3 stopped message.
It is unattended but still in the startup phase.
Hope this helps!
Back to engine 4 everything is normal.
But with stutters that look related to a high cpu-usage that I did not look in to yet.
Maybe micosoft looking for updates or not tweeked to death yet...

Peter,

I got the temp error B and buffer to large messages too.
It happened when I changed from engine 4 to 3.
An album with 8 flac songs stopped after processing song 7 and gave the messages and stopped playing.(Actually it never started)
I guess it is the preprocessing that's doing this?
(Vista with hiFace).
204  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: We all fell in the W7 pitfall on: October 02, 2010, 11:25:22 am
So back to Vista.
But what to to with the SSD.
I remember W7 was optimal for this, but can it be used properly in Vista?
Luckily I can stil boot from a harddisk with Vista, only have to do some tricks to get Bios-information on the rigth screen...
After this better put Vista to the SSD or leave it on harddisk?
Or only put XX on SSD or...
205  Ultimate Audio Playback / Phasure NOS1 DAC / Re: World's first NOS 24/192 filterless DAC ? on: September 18, 2010, 06:09:50 pm
Peter,
Just for curiosity,
I thought you did not use resistors in the signal path?
But if you do then a good quality volume control is easily made by adding a potmeter after the resistor between signal and ground.
The wiper you connect to signal and this way there are no bad contacts or bad resistors in the signal path.
Maybe this is what you already tried but I thought I'd ask.

BTW. If you postpone delivery a bit more maybe I'll have some more funds to buy one!  Wink
BTW2, What is the way to order and what will it cost?

Haha,
Just made one myself with a trafo connected to the output of an audigy with a wavegen-program running on 7.83 Hz.
I don't feel or see anything happening.
But I believe in it!
It heals you, it works like an Indian Guru, it makes you see things at places you never visited, and what else you can find with google.

The strange thing is the family gets more social, they're still talking after midnight like never before.
Maybe I'll have to turn it off to get some sleep, or better not and sleep better...

But serious, I did not AB yet and maybe the 'antenna' is not giving a strong enough signal, but it looks promissing.

Easy for DIY, Wavegen at audiotester.de, a soundcard with headphone output and a toriodal trafo with 110 and 220V taps.
Connect the middle tap to mass, the two 220 V taps to left and right output from the soundcard and your done.

And the rain just stopped here!
Hope the children get up easily tomorrow!

Mani,

It's not the 9 Hz resonance but the ones at the audible frequencies like the page about the Funk Firm Fxr arm shows.
If you see that, your heart skips a beat, but of course help is on it's way.
Just buy their arm.  Wink
BTW. Funk Firm is the new name for the restarted Pink Triangle firm, known for it's very good=neutral sounding record players.

Well, the technical part is over my head, although I get reminiscences of the mp3/atrac/dcc explanations from 20 years ago.

The piano still intrigues me, is the rhytm missing on 44 kHz too?
To me it sounds like the piano is missing some of it's impact because of resonances from the recordplayer-arm.
I don't have this record but on my player I like the pianosound a lot.
If only I could record at 192/176, not even 44 at the moment.

A nice explanation can be found here: http://www.thefunkfirm.co.uk/arms/fxr_II.html

If this is the case, a very good record player could give us a perfect digital source??

Haha,

But for old men clicking with the mouse on a small button is difficult too!
Especially if you use a 'Wim Kok'- mouse. scratching scratching scratching

I suppose this is nitpicking

Haha, yes thinking of it.. Never to old to learn/think!
So much for the rest of my remarks!
One-note is not true too, and is it just an ordinary sax?

One way it is interesting to find out what instruments you can hear, maybe a new hobby..
