Ok, ok, if you start to threat...
I listened to the 44 first and thought, well it sounds good. I don't expect the hires to sound much better, and got a bit bored of the one-note hihat, one-note sax and one-note drum. But than the 174 started off and sounded almost completely different. The first thing you hear is the acoustic off the recording place, it sounded warmer, less upfront and not one-note anymore. Not boring at all anymore and now I can understand why you liked to record this song.
But I used no oversampling/ QAP on 44 so maybe that changes the picture?
Edit: Just tried 44 QAP and I think now it is more detailed, bass drum more clear, more space but not the aha-feeling.

Ivo,
I agree with everything said already, and can add just a little of my experience. If you want to buy in the shop then go to a good shop and ask to try some of their cables for a weekend. This is how I started and ended up with a very nice sounding cable by audioquest. (20 years or so ago). The other cables sounded thinner and this one was warmer and silky. After that tried a lot of different DIY-experiments, to end up with buying vd Hull en Nordost. But then I read about wire without plastic insulation, laquer-wire used to make transformers. It was a big surprise, transients sounded so clean, absolutely no smearing. I guess teflon is better in this respect too like audiodidact wrote, but no dielectric is best of course. Just like capacitors, the dielectric has a big influence. Then the thickness of the wires. I did not believe it but really it has influence, for my speakers I ended up with eight strings of 1 mm wire. For mid/high a combination of .5 and .35 mm sounded best. It is like they have their own resonancefrequency wich gets canceled by the combination. And the wires have to be twisted to give some mechanical stiffness, wires are not supposed to move relative to each other. This idea you can find at Cardas too, but they are expensive! If you feel like it, DIY is the way to go! If you don't want to DIY go back to my first advice.
Peter, maybe a thread for tips and tweeks for the other parts of the chain?

Hello Peter,
I like to keep a lot of tabs open on my browser. It is than easy to find the right page back if there is a small favicon-icon in the tab. Would be nice if you could put the xx-logo there.
Thanks,
Gerard.

Yeah, that was my next question! What turntable, cartridge, preamp are you using for this? I guess if it is to 'low-end' the comparison will be veiled by this.
I'm going to record with a terratec phase 24 FW and play with a HongKong Dac. First have to find a good program to record in 24/192. And hope the needle is clean and undamaged enough... The good point is that recording vinyl this way allows you to play the records loud (through XXHE) without any acoustical feedback.

Better late then never... Thanks to you boys I tried the higher buffer settings (1024) with adaptive mode and normal Q1=1 and wow! The first evening I tried to lower buffer and Q and everything went fine and low, thinking this will give the best sound. A little disapointed I stopped to go sleep and never felt like trying anymore, maybe back to vinyl? So now it is back to enjoying the music, and yes the best ever! Maybe a little extra tweeking and maybe let John Kenny do some surgery on the hiFace and you'll never hear from me again!
