46  Ultimate Audio Playback / Playback Tweaks and Source related subjects / Re: Windows 8.1 on: October 19, 2013, 08:33:31 pm
After installing W8.1 on my regular PC without any problem (only the ATI-drivers were not up to date so HDMI-output was underscanned)  I just updated the music-pc.
No problems, only a reboot needed for UAC.
Music sounds good in unattended.
I can not really compare since I'm experimenting with my amps...

Funny thing is the wallpaper on my regular PC gets the same as on the music PC, so I can read what's playing while writing this.
Must be because I use the same live-account-user.
That's something not so nice, you need a live-account to log in.
This was optional in 8, in 8.1 I think its mandatory, unless I did not keep my eyes open?

The strange thing with this amp is that they are proud 2nd order distortion is added, but still the uneven order distortion stays there too. I always thought uneven order has to be completely missing while even order is not objectionable to the ears.
Still the amp looks stunning!

Yes Peter, please share the recording, because I  don't get what it is your saying about it!
The only thing that resonates in my mind while reading your story is maybe the walls and floor resonate to make this low frequency?
Question, is there low frequency ambience when the musical instruments don't go so low? wacko
49  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Controversial post and new Setting on: October 08, 2013, 10:10:59 pm
Well it's so easy to try so I did it too.
Jackpot for me!
I just had XXHE working properly again on Win8.
After the first excitement I felt there was a bit of sameness leading to uninterestedness. The high's needed a bit more freshness, more aliveness. Everything sounded smooth and undistorted but agressive guitars don't sound like that. Bass as always was less impressive then what I can get from some vinyl.
With SFS changed from 12 to 4 I feel the bass has become strong as supposed too and still refined and tunefull.
This evening been playing disco-hits from the 80's ( blush1).
The rhytm is perfect, timing and volume too. And what's important the low bass you can feel in your stomach while dancing. (Mostly the children, but then on music from the 80's, unimaginable before).
What I like along the strong tunefull bass is the fresh highs that make it sound alive and spacious.
After two hours of this music I still did not turn it off... Shocked

The solution for this problem was not clear for me but was already here. After activation the border of the wallpaper is still yellow because the wallpaper is not refreshed in time. At playing the second song the wallpaper gets refreshed and will be red if properly activated. yahoo

Hi Paul,

Can you give me the brand and type of the speakerunits and the crossoverschema? I'd like to do this really DIY.
But for the record, I have big TL's here that sound perfect, but the Orelino's are really something from another world! unsure

Hi Peter,

That's a very nice invitation!
My wife enjoyed talking to you and Ciska and the children were having fun too. So we're happy to visit.

I hope you like K3 or something from the top40 or how they call that these days, because the children can get bored by the old peoples music!
There is some hope for us because Gwen just started pianolessons.....
I'll be having very high expectations since if the not so good sounds can be fixed to the same level as the good sounding parts it must be the best sounding system in the world!
My wife would be happy to buy the Orelino's, they look gorgeous and no speaker cable! I'll have to find a reason why we shouldn't since my boss did not raise my salary at all unhappy and I only won 50 euro in the lottery last week.
So we'll have to pick a date soon.

Give our kind regards to your family!

Peter has an XX-badge, my wife is indeed checking the cable behind the Orelino (it's her biggest complaint at home, I already posted them here some time ago!) and the children are having fun.
Maybe some of the other people can come forward here?

Since my name has ben mentioned I must give my reaction I guess.
After 30 years I visited a hifi-show again, this time with wife and children and we had a nice afternoon. I told them we had to check if new audiosystems sound better then our aged homesystem. Well luckily no system sounded better! Wink
All the rooms had either to much bass, heavy colouration or no definition. At entering the BD-XX room there was a big difference, phenomenal definition like comparing 4k with VGA. But after sitting down some strange phenomena got in the way. Like people moving close to the speakers, changed the soundstage abruptly. Mind they were not straight in between speaker and listener.
It comes to my mind like the horns are like a radar that makes it possible to see all the obstacles in the room.
Then my favourite track of Van, Moondance, sounded awfull, no base, no warmth, no rhytm. When I came home I played my vinyl-version and was afraid this was a different song, but I'm sure I saw the title on the monitor after Peter found it after a long search.
So it was disapointing to don't hear the perfect bass I was expecting but it was nice to have a chat with the St-family, and my wife is getting warmed up for the NOS1.
Since our government doesn't know anything about economy we have to keep our money in our pockets here in the Netherlands, so I'll have to wait some more before I can join the happy NOS1 family.

Just read this:

maybe this is related?
57  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / 09-z9 with W8: Skips to next track after 20 seconds on: July 01, 2013, 09:45:36 pm
Sound interuptions happen here in a special way.
After installing Win8 again with a wonderfull sound, the music skips to the next song after about 20 seconds. And again after 20 seconds and again... Like an intro scan.

Maybe remove all capacitors from th PC, no resonances, no blankets, no sound? Wink
59  Ultimate Audio Playback / Playback Tweaks and Source related subjects / Re: PCI supply rail noise on: April 12, 2013, 12:12:58 am

Haha.
then I'll first have to clean them and get the spiderrags off.
But they look simple, just a big round black plug with two white coax (sattelite antenna) wires and a yellow/green earthwire coming out of that.
