256  Ultimate Audio Playback / Orelino / Orelo MKII Loudspeakers / Re: Orelo MK-II mini review **VR** edition on: January 24, 2017, 11:19:50 am

Interesting talk. However, I can't help but think that it's overly-focused on the frequency domain, and not enough on the temporal domain too. For example, I've owned a particular pair of speakers in the past that measured very flat and went very low in the LF. However, they achieved this with a pair of downward-firing ports. The bass was there, no doubt about it, but it was slow and sluggish. It seems to me that there's never such thing as a free lunch.

He talked about active speakers as being the golden standard, because you can more easily tune to get a flat FR. But I still can't get my head around how to manipulate the 'natural' (i.e. unadulterated) sound from the speaker whilst avoiding any detrimental side effects, such as driving the drivers too hard in certain areas.  For example, when I played around with my Orelos, I had to boost 50Hz by over 20dB to get a reasonably flat in-room response. Over time I learned that this was producing some very undesirable side effects. I suppose just tweaking slightly should be fine.

But I'm no speaker designer, so what do I know?...

Hey VJ, so what does the VR Edition entail? Is it available for all Orelo owners? If so, make sure you spread the word. (Of course, it no longer applies to me... unhappy)

258  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Mach II vs. microRendu on: January 19, 2017, 07:19:16 pm
I've just started a new thread on CA, comparing a couple of old DACs with a modern DAC: http://www.computeraudiophile.com/f6-dac-digital-analog-conversion/digital-analogue-converter-test-old-school-vs-new-kid-31354/.

I doubt whether the thread would be of much interest to many people here (or to even those over at CA?), but it's something that I've wanted to do for a long time. However, there's something that I've just tried that might be of interest here...

Originally, I used the following chain:

Roon RAAT -> microRendu (LPS-1 PSU) -> Intona -> AR-T Legato -> BNC spdif -> DAC -> Prism AD-124 -> BNC spdif -> Tascam DA-3000 (SD card)

But I thought it'd be interesting to try the Mach II too, so I did:

XXHighEnd 2.07 -> Phasure Mach II -> Intona -> AR-T Legato -> BNC spdif -> Altmann -> Prism AD-124 -> BNC spdif -> Tascam DA-3000 (SD card)

Here are the files for comparison:

Original file: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B0...0F4SXJRZmZ0Unc

microRendu -> Altmann DAC: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B0...VFYWkdMTTNka2s (file is 1.5dB down on original, which will need to be accounted for during playback)

Mach II -> Altmann DAC: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B0PU5LO5jVjfb1ZFc1RNMmR4NjA (file is 3dB down on original, which will need to be accounted for during playback)

I didn't want to say it over at CA, but XX2.07/MachII is miles ahead of Roon/microRendu. But don't take my word for it, take a listen yourself.

Anyone planning on going? I've booked my flights and hotel and will attend the show all day on Friday and Saturday. There are a few manufacturers I'm hoping to meet up with (primarily Reinhard from Thöress and Manolis from Tune Audio), but it'd be great to meet anyone from this forum too.

In any event, I'll report back on my findings from the show.

260  Ultimate Audio Playback / Phasure NOS1 DAC / Re: B'ASS Current Amplifier on: January 13, 2017, 03:46:50 pm
Hey Peter, I'm sure (along with everyone else here, I suspect) that what you're reporting about the improvement in SQ with the B'ASS is absolutely true. But I have to say that with 2.07, the sound is so good that I'm quite content without the B'ASS upgrade... for now. (Of course, I've never heard it, so can't miss it.) So please take as long as you need.

261  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: 2.07 a great christmas surprise on: January 13, 2017, 03:41:07 pm
I totally agree with all the positive comments regarding the SQ of 2.07. To my ears it sounds 'cleaner' and 'clearer' than 2.06a. With 2.07, it's almost as if I've reduced the SFS to very low level (I haven't), BUT the sound remains nice and full (as opposed to too thin or anaemic, as low SFS tends to produce).

I hope this makes sense.

Any idea what -in the end- cause that rename to fail ? is it in the same realm (somehow) ?

OK, my excuse is that I still feel jet-lagged from coming back from holiday...

I now realise that xxhighend.exe is not being reverted back to the 2.06a version at all. It just so happens that the 2.06a version was dated 12/(can't remember month)/16. The 2.07 version is dated 23/12/16. So when I saw 12/x/x in the date, I thought it was going back to 2.06a. But actually, it says 12/1/17. I never realised xxhighend.exe was 'updated' after each use.

Sorry for any confusion.

... as soon as I close it, XXHighEnd.exe gets replaced by the previous 2.06a version. I'll try to replicate this and take a few screen shots.

Everything does seem to work now, but I thought I'd share these just in case there is something untoward still going on.

I think I already know what is going on ... your super duper non-NTFS system !

Nah, the c: drive is a regular drive. Anyway, see above...

Ahhhhh... All solved.

The problem seems to have been using a screen shortcut for XX, with 'run as administrator' checked, which is what I've always done for software players. Everything works fine if this is not checked.

OK, there is something strange going on...

I have managed to get 2.07 working on my music server. BUT... as soon as I close it, XXHighEnd.exe gets replaced by the previous 2.06a version. I'll try to replicate this and take a few screen shots.

All I did was extract the 2.07 upgrade patch into the 2.0x folder where 2.06a was sitting, and working perfectly. I've just checked all the rights to this folder and everything seems OK.

Anyway, I have just created a new 2.06a folder and extracted 2.06 and then the 2.06a patch to it. 2.06a seems to be working fine. I will extract the 2.07 patch over this and see what happens.

The path on the music server is C:\XXHighEnd\2.0x.

No, doing it manually doesn't seem to help. Any other ideas? Otherwise I'll try doing things locally (not via RDC) to see if that works.

This means that no 16/44.1 will be replaced by MQA versions.

There were some early reports on CA that 16/44.1 files were actually being replaced and not simply augmented by MQA files. I hope they were wrong...
