841  Ultimate Audio Playback / Playback Tweaks and Source related subjects / Re: EMI susceptibility of audio and USB clocks on: April 02, 2014, 08:43:28 am
Nice work Nick, and thanks for sharing.

Using the diy clocks as a reference the dexa at the NOS end was retuned again to very close to 24mhz. Then PC end dexa usb was re-tuned to match the DAC end dexa with both running much closer to 24mhz.

How close is 'close enough'? And how much do you expect the Dexas to drift away over time from their current settings?

842  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Bass Issue (Lack thereof) on: April 02, 2014, 08:40:17 am
This is a tough one Lee...

I normally have a NOS1 here in my home office/study, but it's currently with Paul (Scroobius). In its place, I'm using an Audioquest Dragon for now. And I can say that I'm getting 'a lot more' bass than I normally do with the NOS1.

But it seems to me that its a typical 'quantity' vs. 'quality' situation. The bass sounds deep and makes the room reverberate... but I wouldn't say it's particularly tuneful.

Having said this, I've heard a stock NOS1 vs. a Nick/Paul-modded NOS1 and I have to say the latter made the former sound thin and lacking in bass.

As I said, it's tough...

Here in the UK, the April fool's joke needs to be made before midday... else the maker is the fool.

Peter, was it 4:02pm that you posted???

844  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Sony Blu Ray player - never again!!! on: March 31, 2014, 10:50:55 pm
I'm totally pissed off with Sony and their bloody Blu Ray players. I've had the optical drive of a PS3 fail in 18 months, the optical drive of a [fairly expensive] Blu Ray player fail in 15 months... and now the optical drive of another [fairly cheap] Blu Ray player fail in just 3 months.

I'm sure Sony still produces many good and reliable products, but my experience is that their Blu Ray optical drives have terrible reliability. I am the only one???

Also, I now need to replace two Sony Blu Ray players. I totally refuse to buy another Sony. I'm happy to stretch to €500 for one and €200 for the other. Does anyone have any recommendations based on their own experience living with the machine for a while? I've read good things about the Oppo - any thoughts?

845  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: SQ of 1.186, best ever! (Again) on: March 28, 2014, 04:03:58 pm
I think minimised os is essential to the forum opinion. Now you have to get a licence to use that. My advice is that you save some money the coming weeks/month and purchase a licence. It one of the best audio buys you will ever do and one of the cheapest too.

846  Ultimate Audio Playback / Orelino / Orelo MKII Loudspeakers / Re: Difference beteen Orelino and Orelo MKII ? on: March 25, 2014, 10:50:31 am
But didn't Peter tell you that there is also the option to have an extra bass section on top of the Orelino and Orelo MkII?

But might someone really want it, technically the reference level (no sub-low audible distortion) of 88dBSPL will go to 94dBSPL (at straight to 19Hz). Not sure who would need that, but in the end it could be about a very (very !) large room.

I'll stick with my MkIIs, sans extra bass section, I think - should be more than OK in my room.

But if I had a much bigger room, rather than going for an extra bass section with the MkIIs, I'd probably just change my order to a pair of MkIs. But I suppose it's good to offer people the option...

Hey Peter, here's what you said about the Orelo MkI speakers at X-fi 2012:

When we left last night after breaking all up, we left a cold empty room #110 and I said "good bye my cosy room !".
Yes, I want to be in there again. Play all my greatest tracks.

In terms of SQ, how much of a compromise are the MkIIs over the mighty MkIs?

But I understand, more general subjects first - I'm really enjoying learning about the more technical aspects of the speakers.

Wasn't sure where to put this, so maybe it needs to be moved at some point...

But is is about the sound !

So, any thoughts on the sound you can share with us?

849  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Requirements for NAS on: March 18, 2014, 01:04:48 pm
Are there any specific requirements for a (simple) NAS, for convenient use with XXHE?

Hi Stanley, not sure if this is helpful, but I've been using a NAS for music storage for a number of years now. It's 'only' 5x1TB drives, which is enough for me, and has worked perfectly since I set it up. I'm not at home right now so can't check, but it's a Synology NAS (the 1010+, I think).

This is how I use it with my main music PC:

1. rip CD from Plextor drive (without cache) onto SSD of ripping PC

2. transfer ripped files to NAS

3. put music PC in normal non-minimized state

4. transfer files to single HDD (2TB, I think - with a 100GB partition for the OS and XX) in music PC

5. put music PC back into minimized mode

Now, with the dedicated music PC in my office system I do not transfer the files to its internal HDD (actually a small SSD), but access them directly from the NAS (with 'copy to XX drive' enabled) for playback. The waiting time for the transfer before playback is literally a matter of a few seconds - nothing at all really. But FYI, the LAN is constantly 'on' as I use remote desktop via LAN to control the dedicated music PC from my work PC on my desk. Probably not the best for SQ, but it's OK for my office system.

When I get back home, I can test using the NAS with my main PC and disabling the LAN before playback. Never tried this. Might be interesting to hear if there is much difference between playing the files from the internal HDD.

HTH.

There is still more, but nobody likes too long posts ...

Speaking for myself, I'd be more than happy to have one of your really long posts on all this.

The more I hear about these speakers, the more psyched I am to have mine here. It seems Bert has really put some serious effort in getting things where they are (with more than a bit of help/encouragement from you of course). Well done!

Hey Peter, just for my understanding, your NOS1 is still floating on water, right? And you still believe that this really helps, right?

Just a quick note to say that title of this thread isn't really accurate. I've actually ordered a pair of Orelo MkII speakers from Peter and not the Orelino speakers. Not sure what 'clean' sub-20Hz bass is going to sound like in my room... but really looking forward to finding out.

Hi Juan, I'll reply to your PM tomorrow.

Hey Peter, no offense, but is this really the best photo you could take of your Orelo MkII speaker? Satty (my wife) just saw it and immediately said "Darth Vader". Perhaps that was the response you were looking for?

Daa da da daa, daa da daa, daa da daa...

Tomorrow is going to be a sad day. Gerd Sauermann is coming over to collect the mono amps he lovingly built for me.

Well, Gerd has just been... and gone, with my beautiful mono amplifiers  unhappy

It was an absolute pleasure to see him again. His enthusiasm for our hobby is contagious.

The cables that truly 'filter less' MUST be those that affect the sound the least when placed in series with another (any) cable... no?

Actually, Gerd disagreed with this. His main focus is in the time domain, and not the frequency domain. He suggested the following scenario. Imagine a 1m cable that was smearing the signal in the time domain (most cables do this, according to Gerd). Now imagine placing an identical 1m cable in series with this. There would probably be no change in sound (or very little). According to my 'hypothesis', this shows that the second cable is perfect. But of course, it isn't. It just isn't good enough in the time domain to show the issue up.

So, I'm now going to go for plan A. I will try all permutations of cables and NOS1 positioning to determine which is the best configuration. I asked Gerd how I could determine the 'best', without a reference. His answer was to compare directly to real instruments playing in the room.

Hmmmm...
