1  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: XX to USB DAC on: January 30, 2017, 08:57:05 pm
Hi, Peter,

Understood about the filtering.

With respect to saving and loading settings I would say that what is stored should be able to be loaded including the device drivers (yes, I meant these KS drivers. So, in my case Chord and Envy).  IMO XX can save the list of drivers and mark the current active one. When loading the settings XX can check on which drivers are available and verify this with the (marked) one. If its there then make it current. If not then still load drivers, take the top one, make it the current one and produce a message and let us decide what to do.
Idea? It is a bit strange that you can load all setting except the device driver which you still have to set manually.

Btw, after a weekend of listening the SQ is great now with these high settings.
No.
Even better, ha!
And, I'm already looking for the next step. My mojo DAC is now connected with my PC with the short cable (10 cm) that comes with the Mojo. When I'm reading about this Intona isolator I was wondering, is the issue with the Intona all about galvanic isolation which does the SQ improvent, rather than the length of the cable. IOW, would I profit from the Intona knowing that I will need two usb cables instead of one (and of more length) and a box, all replacing this 10cm cable? What do you think?

2  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: XX to USB DAC on: January 25, 2017, 08:36:38 pm
Hi, Peter,

Yes, that was the missing link. Missed that setting. After I set it to 32/768 I could set the upsample rate to 16 times. Great.
So, that is solved, but what I noted was that the filter setting was still on 176400 instead of 705600 and it worked, see screendump. So, does XX not check on this Filter setting? Well, yes, it seems it does because if I set it to 705600 and then go back to original driver settings (176400) I get an Q5 sample rate mismatch and this makes sense. So what happens if I select this new Chord driver with 32/768 setting and 16* upsample rate but leave the filter on 176? I don't get this Q5 message.

I was clever ( I think :-)) and saved the new Mojo settings and loaded settings for the original driver. I noticed it sets everything except... the driver. So, to test it I set it to the chord driver and loaded original settings. All settings were set except... the driver. Is this OK?

One final note. When loading original settings, so presetloader.xxsi, the XX screen shrinks to a small size. It didn't do that when loading the Mojo settings. A little bug?

Hi, Peter,

yes, that must be the case. Returned to Normal mode a few times as requested by you to get the logfiles needed, but moved back to minimised mode with Wasapi off, now showing only the non-wasapi drivers.
I'm quite Ok actually with the current KS mode drivers and it is easy to switch between the two. So, for me what is left now is the question why I can't go to a higher upsampling rate.

Hi, Peter,

Over the days since my last mail, and a few PC and XX restarts later the list of drivers that I see has changed and is now only showing KS drivers (excluding the primary sound driver), see attached. I don't what happened. Also I added new logfiles based on these new list of drivers. Hope this helps with you investigations

Hi, Peter,

Attached are the log files.
Hope you see what is going on and why I cannot raise the upsample rate.

Thanks, George, Peter,

Ok, this button "Stop WASAPI Services".
I switched back to Normal mode and made it inactive and after restarting XX two new Mojo drivers appeared in the XX settings list: a Chord KS-driver and a Digital Output driver. Strange, they are not the Direct Sound, ASIO or Wasapi drivers that come with the Mojo. Does XX show/translate them differently?
Nevertheless, when I selected the Chord KS driver and pressed play all worked in one go! No additional settings to set. Amazing!
It means I can now easily switch between original and Mojo driver. Great.

Selecting Digital Output didn't work, btw (black screen, no sound).

Before I start listening seriously I have two questions:
1 - If the Chord KS driver is actually using the Wasapi driver, then as I understand it uses engine3, isn't it? Wasn't that one a bit inferior to Engine 4?
2 - I would have thought that I now could upsample more than the four times I did with the original driver (Mojo supports higher input frequencies), but 4 seems the maximum setting. I can go to 2 and 1 but not to 8 or 16. Also switching on/off the fx button doesn't make a difference. I use setting Custom, but ArcPredict or AntiImage don't make a difference. 4 is the max . Any idea why?

Bert

Hi, Peter,

Thanks for the latest XX-version R2.07. I had R2.04 but skipped R2.06 and installed R2.07 and again, I don't know how you do it, SQ has improved. Great!

I have a question. I replaced my head-amp with a Mojo from Chord. It is a huge improvement and I'm really happy with it and in addition to that... it also has a superb DAC (check the internet).
It plays DSDs and goes up to 768kHz/32-bit on its micro USB input.

You will understand what I'm up to Happy. I would like XX to provide the music data to this DAC. I was looking on the forums to find parameters I need to set in XX to be able to use the DAC in the Mojo, but it is difficult to find something.
My question is, are there any guidelines somewhere on the fora to setup XX for a USB DAC, in this case the Mojo? One of the things I need to do is exclude the chord windows USB-drivers for being stopped by XX in minimised mode, but there may be other things to set.

Could you help me out?

Thanks in advance,
Bert

Hi, Peter,

Perhaps a good idea to add to the manuals that only going from mixed mode to one of the two contiguous modes requires a reboot. And switching between the two contiguous modes doesn't.

My question came from my understanding from the manuals that also switching from mixed contiguous to straight contiguous required a reboot (which I wasn't asked for by XX, therefore my doubts), but apparently that is not the case if you are already in mixed contiguous.

Hi, Peter (and Johan, thanks for notifying upon this setting Happy),

I set XX to Straight Contiguous, but got no reboot message. I set it while in Min OS mode. Was this allowed? I had no idea if XX picked up the new setting so got back into normal mode and checked Control Panel->System->Administrative Tools->Local Security Policy. My username was in there so, so far so good, however I still don't have a clou if XX has picked up the new setting (it should have asked to reboot isn't it?)

Is there a way to check it?

regards,

Bert

Hi, Peter,

Was in the UK this week, so therefore this late response.
I got it all running now, a licensed 2.02 XX, the sound card and XX in min OS and the sound is great!
It first didn't want to create a restore point but I got that fixed after finding a help for that on the forum.
I was a bit stubborn, actually  Wink, as re-installing sound drivers could, that is what I thought, easily give problems in Min OS, cause of missing/stopped services. Therefore I solved this first before going into min OS. And this time going into min OS worked OK.

Thanks for your help.

@Johan.
Johan, as I understand from the manuals it is a kind of 'best of both worlds' (at least for me) being in the middle between being Mixed and Straight Contiguous. Mixed mode provides the least SQ of the three and SC requires starting whatever track immediately after starting XX to be sure that memory is reserved exclusively for XX, which I personally find a bit 'unpleasant' to be so hasty right after starting XX (knowing that SC gives best SQ).

Bert

Hi, Peter,

Light in the darkness!
I started with the second option, the registry key setting. However, I didn't have the admin rights to start regedit. Lots of shields symbols everywhere blocked me from doing things.

Then I continued with the repair option via the W10-DVD. First I tried to restore a restore point, however the file seemed to be corrupted. No way to restore it. There is a 'Refreshing your PC" option that I tried and some how this worked in the sense that I was able to start programs again.
When I clicked on the XX icon in the task bar it came up with the wellknown "Check UAC" popup. When I choose Reboot it executed the reboot  very happy!
After the reboot XX was back again and working! However it returned not in minimised OS, but in Normal mode. But, OK, so far so good. The sound card driver was gone but I could reactivate that (partly). The XX-license was not gone, luckally, and I could start XX and got it playing.

Currently I'm still struggling with the soundcard driver but that is another issue. Once that is working the next step will be going to Minimised OS again.

I hesitate doing that, as you probably understand smirk. So, any good suggestions before doing that?

Thanks anyway for the suggestions and i'm glad that things start working again.

regards,
Bert

Peter,

All worked fine and sounded great in Normal OS, unattended mode.
I'm running W10-Build 10074 showing as follows on my screen in the right hand corner.
"Test mode". Below that: "Windows Pro Insider Preview" and below that: "Evaluation copy. Build 10074". Seems OK?

My sig shows "Mixed contiguous" and that is what it is.

I can't go back to Normal mode anymore to check things, or whatever. That is the problem. If I click on the XX symbol in the taskbar, or double click the .exe, then the only thing that happens is the "Check UAC" popup appearing displaying this "After this a Reboot is required...." message. Selecting Cancel vanishes the popup; clicking OK too and no reboot takes place. I waited a few minutes to check this.

I seem to locked into this (please don't tell me that I have to reinstall all...)

Hi, Peter,

After enjoying the Great-W10 sound I wanted to go one step further and enjoy Great-Great W10 sound via Minimised Mode. However, here I got stuck.

A restore point is created but after rebooting I get an HARD error popup (which I can ignore as I understand from somewhere on the forum).
Then, when starting XX, I get a "Check UAC" popup saying:

"After this a Reboot is required to put through changed User Account Control Settings; Not allowing for this will quit XXHighEnd. Reboot?".

Yes, ofcourse, go ahead, reboot.
But nothing happens. I tried manual reboots but same popups appear.
I then tried to manually check and set UAC: Explorer -> This PC -> Properties -> Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Change User Account Control Settings. I can click on the option 'till I weigh an ounce', so to say, but nothing happens. I do not get to this slider screen. Others settings are also not accessible anymore, such as the Taskmanager via Taskmgr.exe ("The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no devices associated with it".
So, i'm lost and cannot make this last final step to ultimate sound...

Any idea how this can be solved?
(Btw, can a restore point somehow be manually be restored?)

Hi, Peter, JohanZ, Nik.d, others,

It is The Guitar Album from Hein van de Geyn (yes, indeed we are going Dutch here, btw.)  Happy

A really good CD. It was especially 'good' while it failed playing at the first track, ha, ha!
That is, with AI.
With other CD's I had to wait till track x to find it skipping there.
So, this CD saved me a lot of time when trying to find the cause of the problem!

Btw Bert, I got that AI from your sig. At least that must have gone quite deliberately. Happy Happy

Well, I never touch this AP setting, so it is not in my focus and therefore I didn't even notice it while putting it in my sig.

Bert

Hi, Peter,

I'm happy Happy, happy and happy.

XX is working again. I solved the GDI-problem first according to your suggestions and after that switched to Arc Prediction and that solved the skipping issue. So, everything is working again.

Another forum member, Johanz, mailed me and said he had the same skipping problem with AI and also solved it by switching it of, so this confirms for me it is all about AI.

Now, my question is how this AI-switch got set. I don't know. Really.
I always make screendumps of settings per XX-version and can't find back this setting. Its always arc prediction.
I think I'll take the easy way: just blame my wife  Cool.
No. Kidding. I don't know.

Anyway, I'm happy and got my confidence in XX back.

As a thank, if you are still interested, let me know, I'm happy to sent you this CD I used for testing (it is a really good jazz CD!).  Send the zipped version via filemail.com to Sales@phasure.com?

regards,

Bert
