And valve clipping is soooo much nicer to listen to than SS...as a generalisation...that is if you must listen to something clip.

That is the beauty of an active system when using low powered amplifiers, they do not have to drive the passive crossover components.  Mani, you have passive crossovers which also have to be driven by the amplifier, so your 0.05W calculation is likely to be quite underestimated, it is likely to be quite a bit higher.  Then there is the unknown impedance behaviour of the speaker and crossovers which will affect the power that the amplifier is able to deliver.

Hi Peter,

Please take your time to make it right.  For me there is no real difference between waiting 3 more weeks or 3 more months.

Cheers,

Anthony

I have also heard Peter's system and it just does not happen at his which is in a very big room with lots of space between the outer edges of the speakers and the side walls. No such luck here there are lots of side wall reflections because so close.

The larger the room the lower the Schroeder frequency and the fewer room nodes...that is simple physics.  I would love a big room for audio, but that is not going to happen anytime soon.

Mani,

Lovely looking speakers and I think there is a lot to like about the design of them also.  I would be so tempted to go active with them, but to each their own of course.  Are you planning a sub at all?  You get so much "presence" with the lowest octave...personally I would try to integrate a lower channel (says he not having heard them - sorry!)

Cheers,

Anthony

156  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Adding Wireless to Music Server on: November 24, 2016, 08:10:47 am
Here is how I do it (I also think this is how Peter does it):

MusicServer wired into home network and the internet.

AudioPC is direct connected (no router) to the MusicServer via a second ethernet port in the MusicServer.  I have slotted in a PCIe card that gives me the second ethernet port.  Across this direct connection I have set static IP's both ends and made sure that there is no internet access from the AudioPC by not specifying a DNS Gateway.

iPad is connected by wifi to the home network.

I RDC from the iPad into the MusicServer to run Tidal and rip cd's.  From the MusicServer I RDC into the AudioPC to play music...so two daisy chained RDC's all operated from the iPad.

It works really well.  Both theMusicServer and AudioPC have no graphics card or mouse or keyboard and the setup is quite stable.

Hope this helps.
157  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Tidal Login Failed on: November 19, 2016, 10:10:42 pm
Hi Peter,

I have previously checked the password by logging out of Tidal and then logging back in.  Also I used a different browser that did not have the Tidal passwords stored and logged in successfully using the same password.  As a further check I just changed the Tidal password (in Tidal) and it still does not work in XXHE.

OS is 64 bits for sure.  XXHE is 2.06b.

The two dialogue boxes I get after I try the password are:

"Tidal Login"  "Failed" OK

"Initialize Tidal"  "Tidal could not be initialized (failed on creating Tidal Login Data)"

I think I will next try updating 2.06b to that other version you sent me to fix the 40 cores problem.  This should be ok to do?

Regards,

Anthony

Hi Peter,

I just did the play and shutdown thing several times and it seems it was activated.  To prove it to myself I clicked the MinOS button which was successful.  I am a bit stupid though, because I went into MinOS the computer disappeared from the network (network discovery services turned off I assume) and I had to pull the lid off the MusicServer to reinstall the video card and plug in the keyboard and mouse again so I could get it back out of MinOS.

Anyway, that is done, I am back in NormalOS but Tidal Login still does not work.

Regards,

Anthony

The title bar is red, but of course no playback of any kind is available from the PC.  Are you saying that I should plug in the dac and try to play some tunes to see if it is activated?
160  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Tidal Login Failed on: November 18, 2016, 05:35:24 am
Hi Peter,

The new MusicServer (XXHE2.06b - W10-14393 - Normal OS) is not letting me log in to Tidal.  I am not sure why but I have read the other login threads and the Tutorial and am not having any luck to rectify the situation.  I've never logged onto Tidal with this computer before.

As soon as I try for a search I am prompted for my Tidal login details, which I enter (and I have checked that they are correct in Tidal itself) and them immediately I get a dialogue box saying that Tidal Login has Failed, just as Tore did in his thread with the same title.

I have set the IE defaults and even checked that I have access to the internet at this computer, and I do.

Do you have any suggestions?

Regards,

Anthony

I have a camp here and wake up and there are three pages to read in the morning.  I can see that Peter just lost most of his day to this, but I can also see that this might lead somewhere as well if the results can be understood.
162  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Re: Testing a few digital cables on: November 07, 2016, 11:16:38 am

We've just established that the 3 files were identical (a few added clicks in #3). There simply could not be any sonic differences between them, right? BUT... we heard differences. All in our minds?

Mani.

My main point was that something would be wrong if the files were not the same.  For instance, as Peter said above, we can influence the sound in XXHE by changing this dial and that one and minimising the OS but in all cases the bits remain the same, they are not changed.  How do we change the sound with those dials?  By changing the behaviour of the cpu and other parts of the computer and altering how the transport (MR or Mach II in this case) interacts with the DAC.

What a total mind f**k...

I posted the 3 files on Audio Science Review. Ray Dunzl did some analysis on them and found that all 3 are absolutely identical (with a few samples added to #3 - I could hear the clicks but couldn't get rid of them).

And having seen his null results, I'm now having problems hearing any differences between the files!!!

Mani.

I would have been surprised if the files were anything but "bit perfect" so to speak, or "identical"...these sorts of conversions are well sorted in the modern world.

As to what you hear when your mind has new information to digest then...well...that is quite well documented.

164  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: RDC/2.06a Issue on: November 06, 2016, 12:18:19 pm
I had the RDC waiting, waiting, waiting screen as described and to solve it I changed the power scheme on the MusicServer so that the computer would not sleep.  That seems to have solved the problem for the last week or so.

Nice customer service right there Peter.  I wonder if you really tried you could be more patronising, rude and over-sensitive.

I'll only respond to one thing in particular...

Even small overseas audio companies make arrangements for local techs in Australia to perform the upgrades/repairs on their behalf.

Oh is that so. You mean me spending a day with emails on such a bloke who - out of all and IIRC - tried to work out something for the very same Rob and which never happened. That guy ?
Don't make yourself ridiculous.

No, not that guy, assuming I am thinking about the same guy as you.  As far as I am aware you never had contact with him, and he would be about the last guy I would recommend for this task.  There are good techs about, but obviously this option is off the table.

Looks like I am stuck with the NOS1.
