It actually requires relatively so much time that it looks that I may never find that time.
Maybe when I take a day off. Haha.

Peter

Haha...I know that feeling.

It is an office computer.  C, D, E, F, G, I, J, Q are all individual drives and J is the one with some music and XXHighEnd installed (and nothing else).  J is a Samsung 840 SSD, 750GB or 1TB something like that.

I never did create a new directory or change the name of the existing XXHE directory.

Hi Peter,

To be honest I have not had time to do more to chase down the issue, so the problem is still there.

I did as you suggested and could not get ChangeWP.exe to run either from a normal prompt or with Cmd "Run as Administrator".  The program was sitting there is the directory, I could see it, but it would not run.

So, that got me to thinking...I went into Explorer and ran ChangeWP.exe from there and it ran fine...the "Run" button worked as it should have and now XXHE 2.06 starts on the Music Server.  I just downloaded a Tidal album to be sure and it worked as it should...the only possible issue is that the title bar is now blue and not red...

Cheers,

Anthony

The drive is J...that computer has a lot of drives.

No special permissions either on that drive.

Hi Anthony,

I had the same situation with copy/paste new files over 2.04 on my AudioPC but did not choose 'Cancel' button even I was aware that 'ChangeWP' was not executed.
My upgrade went under 'normal' W10 (re-booted from minimized). Returning to minimized W10 brought the same info/warning message again. However, this time, clicking
'Run' successfully called and executed 'ChangeWP.exe'. Few more errors appeared - all related to my re-named XXHE directory, from 2.04 to 2.06. And yes, borders of this
info/warning window were in XXHE style, not Win style.

George

Thanks George,

Unfortunately this computer, the Music Server, does not run in Minimised so I cannot test out that procedure.

Peter, I should have mentioned that this in Win8.0 Pro.

Anthony

Hi Peter,

No, I have not made a new directory...I just extracted the files over the old 2.05 directory.  Not sure what is going on.

203  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / XXHE 2.06 ChangeWP error on: June 20, 2016, 11:50:51 pm
Hello Peter,

So, on my Music Server, which is also a work computer, I have installed the 2.06 patch over 2.05 and have hit a problem.  The files extracted fine over the correct directory and I had no problems, however when I start XXHE 2.06 it performs its pre-load 'assembly' on my left hand screen as it normally does, but before it finishes it comes up with a dialogue box..."Open File - Security Warning"  "The publisher cannot be verified, are you sure you want to run this software?" "J:\XXHighEnd\2.05\ChangeWP.exe" et cetera.  The box is surrounded in the XXHE red theme rather than the normal windows theme and the options available to me are Run and Cancel.  I hit Run and nothing happens, but Cancel works and XXHE brings up another dialogue box as follows...

"Load Settings"
"Initialization FAILED during loading of settings at phases :121;

Do you want to try to load a previously (auto) saved settings preset settings file?"

Does not matter which setting file I load, nothing works and when XXHE is started next time I have to go through the same rigmarole.

Do you have any clues?

Regards,

Anthony

It was about 10 degrees this morning at sunup and reached 30 before lunch...perfect day apart from a bit of wind.  Not a hot 30 degrees though because no humidity, just a beautiful comfortable day.  Mind you four days ago we had strong south-westerlies blowing cold air up from the Southern Ocean over the continent and it got to 10 degrees maximum with rain...that was a shock to the system!

Anyway, yes, I would have 30 degrees or more inside the music room very, very often from say September to May perhaps.  A wall of windows to the north with lots of natural light but little airflow, unlike the rest of the house which has wonderful airflow from every direction but the south (cold when it blows from that way).  I have had passively cooled audio computers before (i5) and they just do not work when the humidity gets up (the case goes from luke warm on a dry day to toasty on a humid day) so I am very wary of them, but perhaps they were not as underclocked as the Mach II.

The thermistor and fan is a good idea though.

So 30 degrees in the music room today? It would have been pretty close (I did not go up there) but it certainly would have been at least that had those 24 valves been glowing today.

I am quite sure that fanless will not work in my (Australian) environment even when the cpu is throttled down.

It is winter here...30 degrees celsius today...what a beautiful day!

Ok, yes, we are on the same page then...I must have misinterpreted something.  Phwew!

Peter,

I was told by someone that judging by the frequency response plot of my main speakers (from my sig) and the consequent change in impedance (depending on the frequency), my power amp (also in my sig) would switch very quickly from 200 (under 8 ohms) to 400 watts per channel (under 4 ohms) - back and forth, mutilating the sound.

Alain, perhaps that is true, but in reality there are not many amplifiers about that are able to double power when impedance halves, and I do not know whether yours can do this or not.  Those amplifiers that properly "double-down" to low impedances have huge power supplies that most people don't want to pay for!

Speakers are generically voltage driven for normal impedances...the higher the impedance the more voltage and less current is required.  When the impedance drops more current and less voltage is required.  Is the amplifier capable of providing enough current for low impedance?  Well that depends on the electrical characteristics of the speaker and amplifier in unison.  I think there is a lot to be said about current driven loudspeakers, but that is a whole other subject not really applicable to this conversation.

Peter, thank-you for your writings following my earlier question.  To my way of thinking the B'Ass would impact the input stage of the amplifier (signal integrity as you describe) rather than the output stage (where the power for the loudspeaker is produced) but you seem to be talking about the speaker load being integral to the effect of the B'ass.  In my example, with zero-feedback single ended triodes and the associated transformer de-coupled speakers the speaker load is not really "seen" at the input of the amplifier (of course the speakers are not absolutely-totally de-coupled, but I would suggest that they are much more de-coupled than for most solid state amplifiers especially those with global feedback).  What the B'Ass would "see" in my situation is the variable impedance of the Passive Line Level Crossovers at the inputs to my amplifiers, not the speaker load as you talk about, so I still have a niggle about what the B'Ass will achieve other than providing enough drive for a highly variable amplifier input impedance, but I guess there is only one way to find out, to put a B'ass in there and see.

Anthony

Hey, this reminds me of the passive I/V conversion I played with for about a year (with the first NOS1 and prior to real production). It suited me well, but a sort of forced by the commercial situation and not so efficient speakers (mine already were 115dB at the sime) I *had* to swap to active I/V conversion. Then too I was shocked because it was actually better and I did not expect that at all.

Peter, there was a time when I would have been concerned about an active I/V but those days are long gone.  In my eyes active at the source is just "necessary" for the reasons that you say about current (and more).

My concern (well a little question mark in the back of my mind) with all this current amplification in the B'Ass is whether its effects are unique to your situation (your gainclones) and whether we are going to get this "improvement" with other power amplifiers.  Will it work with amplifiers of other topologies such as triodes or Class D or...?  That is a little unknown, at least from where I sit, however I generally believe that current is very important when driving an amplifier.  So I guess my question is whether you have tried the B'Ass anywhere else other than with your gainclones?  And sorry to put you on the spot like this...honest question...please know that I am standing first in line for one of these things.

Cheers,

Anthony

Hi Peter,

How does one figure out how many "amplifiers" we need?  Is it a case getting a few and then seeing if that is enough.  Will we be able to add more "amplifiers" in later on if we see the need?

Anthony
