31  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Help needed getting win10 going with XXhighend2.04 on: February 24, 2016, 04:21:27 pm
Guys,

I upgraded from Win7 Ultimate to Win10 build 10586.0 the day before yesterday.
Both are 64 bit operating systems.

I know now that I probably shouldn't have done this, but instead should have started fresh with the ISO file that Peter so kindly pointed me to this morning.

I'm pretty shure that the install is correct:
- WINVER tells me "Version 1511, OS build 10586.0" is installed.
- Installation of updates is turned off using Group Policy Editor. I double-checked, no updates are installed.
I turned off updates using right Mouse Button/STOP within XXhigend. Unfortunately I can't remember which of the two I did first. Does this make any difference?
- I made at least one mistake: I forgot to turn off Windows Defender. I turned it off only after I tried to Activate (maybe too late?) using Group Policy Editor.

I really don't want to start over, so I was wondering if anybody can help me with the last two snags:

1. XXhighend will not Activate, although I have a code, when I enter it XXhighend pop-up says "Done".
    But it never turns red....
2. I can not go higher than 384Khz. Can this be related?

Activation did achieve one thing: Something does happen when I push the Minimize button:
  - I can make a restore point. This only worked after I turned on protection of the C: drive in Control Panel
  - After this I get the message "We're sorry, but your Reboot into Minimized OS can not continue. You may want to contact Phasure about this."
My guess is that because I'm not (or partly????) activated I can not use minimised OS...

The C:\ drive is an SSD, and is the only drive in the PC. The music is located in my other PC.
The audio PC is controlled from another Win7 Ultimarte machine using RDP.

I am not using a RAM disk at all (yet)

Can anybody shed a light on this little problem???

Thanks,

Henk

Peter,

Thanks for the suggestions:)

I already did most of the stuff you suggested (except for the registry thing)

- I reinstalled Jriver. didn't help
- I went back to a previous restore point. I made a small mistake here, don't  remember exactly what I've done, but I had sound for a brief while.
- then I restored an older Jriver library, including settings.

I'm not exactly shure what fixed the problem, but now everything is fine.

Thanks again,

Henk

Hi Peter,

Yes, I do have a KS driver, so I have sound from xxhighend.

The thing is:
Up until last weekend the driver was called:
KS: Phasure NOS1 Out 4.0 [Kernel Streaming]

and now it is called (even before re-installing!):
KS: Phasure NOS1 Out 4.0 >> #pcmrenderer_01_04

The problem I have is that Jriver, which I use for watching movies, can only see:
KS: Phasure NOS1 Out 4.0 [Kernel Streaming]
So Jriver doesn't work anymore....

Off course I immediately tried re-installing the "Phasure_NOS1_v1.0.3_768_setupproduction" driver, but that didn't help.

As soon as the weather allows (it's too hot now) I'm going to try and reinstall Jriver, maybe then it will recognize the "pcmrenderer" driver?.

The question is though: How can this happen, and is there any difference between:
KS: Phasure NOS1 Out 4.0 [Kernel Streaming]
and
KS: Phasure NOS1 Out 4.0 >> #pcmrenderer_01_04

????

Peter,

The other day I hooked up another USB DAC to my xxhighend win7 pc, to compare it to your nos1a.

I never succeeded in getting it to make any sounds, which was a bit of a disapppointment.

The real problem is, that the XXhighend drive has changed from "kernel streaming" to "pcmrenderer"

I have the distinct feeling that it sounds a lot less open, and as a side-effect, I can not use Jriver anymore to watch a movie, because it only "sees" the "kernel streaming" driver which isn't working anymore....

Any idea what I can do to fix this?

Thanks,

Henk

Peter,

I couldn't help but notice that you were unable to find a resistor which is accurrate enough for you application ( <0.005% accuracy??)

So, could you tell me what is wrong with the Vishay Z-foil Resistor? (except for the price of course:)

I've read some raving stories about them (0.005% accuracy, with a TCR of 0.05 PPM/C) while other people don't seem to like them one bit...)

36  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: HDCD problem 1.186-i on: February 22, 2015, 05:28:34 pm
Peter,

That was exactly what I was hinting at... If you convert all your hdcd files to 24 bit files, you will not have any hdcd files anymore, so the problem is solved....

Or am I missing something here???

Hi Guys,

I've had some issues with HDCD, so did some (about 1 minute's worth) of research.

Does anyone on this forum have any experience with hdcd.exe (just do a google search..)

I presume this could solve all HDCD issues, once the hdcd encoded files are converted to 24 bit files?

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the effort:) appreciated.

I don't even have a tablet, so my set-up would be even simpler:
just router -> Music Server (rdp) -> audio pc

I just wasn't shure that if I do it this way that the audio pc can not be reached from the big bad world:)

On the error side of things: I think I just discovered why that network card is so cheap: No win7/win8 drivers are available.

Thanks,

Henk

Hi Peter,

So I could basically buy one of these:
http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/268169/icidu-gigabit-pci-card.html

and connect the audio pc to the control pc directly instead of the router.

It's just that I feel that this still doesn't really answer my initial question... The audio pc will still be used as administrator, without virus scanner, and without UAC. And it will still be connected to the same network, right? So I have the feeling that even if I do this, it won't be too difficult to get infected by anything without even noticing (initially) Or am I wrong here?

But I have no idea if this concern is valid. Does the firewall give me sufficient protection if I don't use the internet from the audio pc???

Me Too
41  Ultimate Audio Playback / Phasure NOS1 DAC / Re: XXHighEnd settings for the NOS1a on: January 27, 2015, 04:20:29 pm
I can't really comment on any of the XXhigend settings yet, I've only been acquainted with xxhigend/nos1a for about a week now.

The difference between what I had, and what I now have is so vast that it dwarfs any changes to the settings that I make:)

However, I do have some concerns about how everything is set up:

I have one Win7 Ultimate/SP1 machine which I use to control everything via  a remote desktop machine (wired, gigabit network). Here I'm not logged in as administrator, and UAC is active.

The remotely controlled audio machine runs minimized OS, unattended, no screen. Here I'm logged in as administrator, I don't use a virus scanner, I never use the internet from this machine, but obviously it is connected to the router, and thus only protected by the firewall.

Is this safe, and if not, what is the best way of improving matters without compromises in SQ?

And please don't ask me to disconnect the ethernet cable:)

Thanks for that Stanley, I didn't know how to reply, but you nailed it:)

Come to think of it:

Sabot is french for klomp.
Sabotage is directly derived from that word. I got these Klompen from Peter (or more likely his wife, who assembles the nos1A)

Peter, I hope you are not trying to sabotage my nos1a experience?

I'm fairly new to the forum, (never posted yet) and only have a few weeks of experience with xxhighend and only 3 days with my brand new NOS1a. Grin

So today I decided to try my first tweak (sorry, haven't gotten around to getting decent feet yet.

I must say that using this very special wooden damping device has made a marked improvement to the sound of especially wooden instruments!

Question to Peter though: I couldn't find any reference to this device in your manual, did I put it in the right place? Or do you think even further improvements are possible?
