Thanks Russs for this great idea!

Glad the idea has been helpful Happy

I've been using 0.9z-2, but only because it was still sitting on my harddrive. That version has the issue of not having the progress bar working though, which comes in handy when adding more that a few albums at a time. I may get around to going further back in versions for the interim, but hopefully Peter can sort things out a little better soon.

Cheers,

Russ

Hi Eric,

I understand the changes to the gallery creation methodology came about when Peter introduced the album renaming function. A most valuable feature that is also.

I also have been having difficulties coming to terms with the new "rules" for gallery creation, and as a result have fired up an earlier version of XXHE when time comes to add new albums. Over time I will work my way through my albums and try and put things into the "official" naming convention, but it's a daunting task for me, so I've put it in the "too hard" basket for the moment. I would rather spend the time listening to music that re-arranging/re-naming folder structures.

Most, if not all, the issues I have arise when albums contain more than one disc and characters are added after the usual CD01, CD02 etc. Boxsets in particular are problematic, and I haven't figured out a foolproof method of describing each album in full, and still allow conformity. Invariably I end up with the rogue "various" folder being created.

Having the option to choose the old or new method of gallery creation (via a tick box) would be very beneficial at the moment for me also.

I have been meaning to bring these issues up myself but never quite got around to it. I can imagine the task of trying to code all the different variants to be a hair pulling experience, so I thought it best to avoid premature baldness for Peter Wink

Peter, perhaps if you could lay out the "rules" the folder naming needs to adhere to it in your coding it might help in our understanding. As I said before, single albums are generally not an issue, it's the multi volume albums where things sometimes go awry.

Cheers,

Russ
153  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: Dual boot affecting NOS1? on: May 09, 2011, 09:22:41 am
For a number of years now I have been using a product called VistaBootPro to manage my dual boot machines. It works extremely well, allowing easy manipulation of the BCD file.

http://www.softpedia.com/developer/PROnetworks-35744.html

edit: here's an alternate link ...

http://en.kioskea.net/download/download-126-vista-boot-pro

There is also another ongoing "product" which is invaluable to those dabbling with building PC's called Hirens Boot CD. It is a collection of various tools all combined on a single bootable CD with a menu structure.

http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd

Caution is advised when using some of the system/disk tools though. If you are unsure of the ramifications in choosing some of the options available in particular tools it is best to avoid them. All in all though, it's a great collection of "geek" tools Happy

Cheers,

Russ

... and are in lo-res mp3 format.

They are indeed.

8kbps @ 11.025KHz is well under the range I expect that XXHE has been designed to handle. Very early on in the development, XXHE wouldn't play anything under 128kbps MP3's and Peter adjusted that down a little to acommodate, but I think your samples are well outside that range. They are in mono also which has been known to trip up XXHE

I can't imagine any real benefit from having test signals at those sample rates. Revert to 128kbps or higher and you'll be OK I reckon.

Russ

I can't recall that I solved this for 0.9z-4(-1) or something, but I can't let it go wrong either ...

Is this bug still there ?

FYI ... all working as intended under 0.9z-5 here  good

Thanks Peter.

Great race, and the best was Webber. And you know why he didn't catch Heidfelt ? because his DRS didn't work at this last opportunity he had ...

Indeed !!

Some excellent racing .. and all that with NO rain .

Yaahhh, but wait. Your album isn't named "4", it is is named "4 ( 1998 )" ...

Ok, will try that.

In the mean time I hope that the director on Sepang has more sense of what to put cameras to than the one in Melbourne the other day. After 90 minutes of F1 I had no clue what I had watched. That the dutch commentary was 4 seconds ahead of the visuals didn't help much either. swoon

ah .. umm .. oops ! blush1

I name all my albums with the recording date at the end and never gave it a second thought. I'm sure with this new piece of "evidence" you can figure it out now:)

re. the F1 coverage, you could always try listening, or even watching, the english commentary via the BBC's web streaming facility. You would probably need to fudge your IP address to appear as being in the UK but I'm sure you know how that's done Wink

BTW .. i've been using the Android timing app from softpauer.com on my phone to get live sector times etc, and it works brilliantly!

Enjoy the race,

Russ

Is this bug still there ?

Just checked ... unfortunately YES.

Same conditions as I outlined above.

Would a log file assist ?

Cheers,

Russ

edit: attached logs anyway to save a bit of time in case you do want them.

159  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: HDD sound (9z4-1) on: April 07, 2011, 06:05:02 pm
Although ... I reboot something like in between 10-50 times per day for other reasons. Yes, I'm at 1:04 only so I think it might give me some 11 minutes more working space in a day sometimes. Hmm ...

Well Pete, 11 extra minutes a day equates to almost 66 hours over a year. Imagine what you could do in 66 hours. Why, you could probably watch 2 full seasons of F1 championships and still have time left for a MotoGP championship as well Happy

The point I was making is that SSD's are a real tangible benefit from a speed perspective, and I daresay if I was running one of the newer i series CPU's and latest chipset motherboards like a lot of you are, the reboot times would reduce significantly compared to the 'ol clunker I'm happily using still.

FYI, I rarely need to reboot to recover contiguous memory if all i do is play music, album after album. It's when I stop playback for a short while to browse through my music catalogue (Excel spreadsheet based ) or perform other tasks that the memory gets fragmented and necessitates a reboot. I suppose I could reduce the size parameter some more, but I'm happy to endure an occassional reboot.

Cheers,

Russ (the one with alternative viewpoints from the crowd Wink )
160  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: HDD sound (9z4-1) on: April 07, 2011, 12:02:44 pm
As we all know the SSD lost its favour since 9z4-1

Well, I for one don't agree with your assertion.

I have not noticed any significant degradation in perceived sound quality using a SSD drive for the O/S.

In fact there is a significant ergonomic benefit from using a SSD now following the release of the new memory management versions. On the occassions where a quick reboot is needed to recover the straight contiguous memory value available following a clean boot, I can achieve that in 51 seconds!

In other words, from the moment I click on the "Restart" boot option, to the moment when XXHE has fired up again ready for further action, be it a press of the PLAY button or queuing up of another album, 51 seconds has elapsed.

Try that with your spinning discs !

Cheers,

Russ

I had my first occurence, that I can recall, of a very brief pause last night ( maybe 1/4 second if that ), while listening to ( I think ) track 4 of Grover Washington Jr's "Winelight" in 24/192 format. I did have my SFS at 500, which I have had set like that for a week or more now, but I've dropped it back to 480 to be a little more conservative. Not sure whether that might have been the cause but I'll continue to monitor.

Rest of parameters as per signature below.

... you just shouldn't do it like that.
I installed it in a new directory, but its now running in demo mode. What file(s) do i need to copy in this directory to run in undemo-ed mode?

This should help Johan ...

163  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: XXHighEnd Model 0.9z-4-1 - Message Box on: February 26, 2011, 04:44:56 am

Well, can you think of a reason that you applied "Do not start at all" ?
Deactivate that, and you'll have what you want (if I understand you correctly).

Bonjour Pierre,

Well, Yes, I could do that, but I was interpreting your notes ...

Quote
Assumed is Unattended Playback (this is a prerequisite for all !). Also assumed is "Do not start Playback at all", hence do that lateron with Alt-P. This is not a must, but it will matter (and has not been tested otherwise).

... as being the preferred way to start playback with the new memory management. I shall try going back to previous way of letting things start automatically, and see if I can detect any meaningful differences between the procedures.

Ta Happy

Russ

FYI ... it's hard for me at the moment to comment on improvements with this version. Reason being is that last week the chap who built my speakers visited and we decided to remove the integration of my subs when playing 2 channel, and discontinue the use of the parametric equalizer in the pre-processor. Net result is a completely difference sound reference and I'm slowly learning to come to terms with what I'm now hearing. Suffice to say it all sounds very much improved, and of immediate note is the tight controlled bass registers. More feedback to come as I appreciate the changes made.
164  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: XXHighEnd Model 0.9z-4-1 - Message Box on: February 25, 2011, 01:15:10 pm
Hi Peter,

in the release notes for 0.9z-4-1 you wrote:

Quote
When playback is started and XXHighEnd quits, notice the message telling you that Services are being stopped. Only when it has gone, use Alt-P for Playback. Not earlier. Also notice that at a first playback session after a reboot this can easily take a minute. A next time it will be seconds to none.

Can you think of any reason why you couldn't append a PLAY function to the code that controls when the message box disappears? It would save the user from having to issue the Alt-P themselves. You could perhaps alter the wording to something like "Services are being shut down, and play will commence when message box disappears. DO NOT attempt manual PLAY before then"

Cheers,

Russ ( still fiddling with parameters ! )

hey guys, Peter had an epiphany and has figured out what the system is doing in the background. The clue is in the song title(s) in the screenshots !

Or I could be wrong and need to ease off on those cryptic crossword puzzles .. haha
