181  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / 0.9z-3 - "naming" bug when using the A-B repeat function on: December 08, 2010, 02:27:35 pm
G'day Peter, it's the bug hunter from down under here Happy

There appears to be a "naming" glitch when using the A-B repeat function in unattended mode.

Load up a track and let it play in unattended mode for a while then go back to the GUI with Alt-X and stop playback. (or just let it complete and allow the GUI to come up normally).

Clear the playlist.

Load up another ( different ) track.

Click on the A button to activate it.

Move the slider along ( 20 seconds will do ), then click on the B button to activate it.

Click on PLAY.

When the GUI disappears and the coverart appears, the ALBUM & TRACK names from that previous track you played are written on the coverart rather that the actual track playing. The correct coverart is shown.

I have tested this several times and the bug is consistent.

If you then disable the A-B repeat function and press PLAY again the ALBUM/TRACK name is then correct ( until the next time you use the A-B repeat).

I looked through the release notes for 0.9z-3 to see if this issue was mentioned and perhaps item 2 in the Known Major issues covers it, but thought I'd mention it in case it didn't.

Cheers,

Russ

perhaps we need to know what state of mind people are in to understand their comments too?

 Wink

haha ... hi Brian,

the woeful performance of the aussies in the recent match merely allowed me to play with JPlay earlier than anticipated, but you do bring up a valid point about state of mind when listening to music. I'm sure we've all had those days when the music just seems to have lost it's sparkle, yet the previous day everything was great.

The human mind is a complex beast and I've learned to accept that our perception of some things can change from day to day. It also illustrates why it is prudent to judge differences in sound quality over a period of a few days rather than an individual snapshot. It's quite possible that the same comparison today may bring forth a difference result, but the purpose of my comparison a couple of days ago was to give some immediate feedback.

Cheers all,

Russ

Again, please share your thoughts & have fun!

hmmmmm .... well now isn't this interesting.

The aussies are getting pummelled by the poms in the cricket so I took a break from viewing that and had a play with JPlay64 on my music server ( running Vista 64 ).

I set the buffer size in Jplay64 to 64 and, playing from the RAMDRIVE, proceeded to flip back and force between it and XXHE playing my usual set of test tracks:

"Samba Pa Ti" from Ottmar Liebert & Luna Negra's album "Solo Para Ti"
"Canto de Oxum" from David Byrne's album "Girls on My Mind"
"Amanda" from Sheffield Lab's compilation album "Creme de la Creme"
"Spanish Harlem (Rebecca Pidgeon)" from Chesky Record's compilation album "The Ultimate Demonstration Disk"

My overall impressions were that XXHE still had an advantage in transient response and "cleanliness", and this was assessed by careful listening to the metallic percussion instruments within the tracks. I usually find that if I get a good sense of metal objects sounding metallic, then the rest of the audible spectrum generally follows along in it's "believability".

I then started to lower the buffer parameter in JPlay64 until I reached the lower limit of 5 buffers. 4 or less and it refused to play. At this setting, 0.1134ms, it was getting rather difficult to discern differences between it and XXHE. I think a lengthy period is needed before a firm preference could be made, but a conclusion could be reached that however Jplay is using memory allocation and resources, should be attempted to be incorporated into XXHE.

Regards,

Russ

PS. Get well Josef Happy

One thing. I could only get the free download to play by loading the tracks with the explorer button in XX. Regular way of loading from embedded explorer wouldn't work.

Have you tried replacing the hyphens (-) in the track names with spaces? I did that as a matter of course and had no issues.

Agreed. So what's your favorite Tommy Emanuel album? Just wondering.....

Tommy who ?? hehe

I first discovered Tommy Emmanuel back in 1987 with his album "Up From Down Under" and have followed his progress since.

I think his 2004 Platinum Edition album "The Journey Continues" is a good representation of his work as it includes both his initial 1993 release called "The Journey" and a continuation selection done 10 years later.

In essence though you can't go wrong with any of his works. None are duds and it would be hard to name a favourite as such.

Russ

My pleasure.

I'm guessing most will skip over track 9 when the, ummm, "vocal" kicks in  nea

Other than that it is a wonderful peaceful album for late in the evening.

While looking for some additional Ottmar Liebert albums, who I enjoy immensely, I noticed on his site a collaborative album that is available for all to download.

http://www.ottmarliebert.com/rose/

There is a link to FLAC's underneath the track listing.

Enjoy Happy

PS: Of course I won't go against anything from the Man Down Under, but I used a Juli@ ...

swoon

Indeed you do Peter, and I'm aware of that, but your initial teeth gnashing when putting your new system together appears to be due to immature drivers/BIOS for that uber motherboard you got rather than a limitation of the Juli@ card itself. When Marcin writes that 3 combinations of audio card and system configuration fail to remain stable, logic suggests ( well, my logic anyway  ) that trialling a known stable audio card would be the next thing to try.

Marcin, from my reading of your posts, you come across as having a good handle on PC matters so I presume you've been down the path of ensuring you have the current drivers/BIOS installed. Did your instability problem arise after you applied all the "tweaks" , or was it evident even on a fresh unmolested install?

Perhaps you could try unplugging the external audiocard and enabling the internal device for testing, assumming there is one available, which is most likely the case these days. Whether you can get KS Spec mode working at all though on those inbuilt devices is a bit of a coin toss.

I wish you the best in hunting down the underlaying cause of your stability issue.

Cheers,

Russ
189  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Special mode stability on: November 22, 2010, 10:43:38 am
All things being equal I would be putting money on the card/driver combination being the culprit. I have a ESI Juli@ card in both my music server and video server (Vista X64 and Vista x86 respectively ), and use Special mode in both with no stability issues at all. The drivers and Juli@ card are rock solid and I don't think I've read any problems with anyone else here that has them, apart from when KS was first introduced and we had to find the appropriate version of driver to use.

If you can borrow a Juli@ card from somewhere to try you will certainly enjoy the low latency it can provide Happy

Russ

My thinking for having an operable counter during the A-B phase was primarily to have the player emulate how a standalone physical player functions. It would assist to a degree in knowing when a specific event was just about to occur, for example a subtle triangle being struck in the rear of the soundstage, that you were trying to focus upon.

If it can't be achieved easily and accurately or is likely to impact sound quality then throw the idea in the bin quicksmart as I'm sure you would do anyway.

Cheers as always,

Russ ( waiting patiently until the 13th March )

hey there Peter Happy

a couple of points about the A-B repeat function I just noticed after trying it again for the first time in ages:

Firstly, while you made mention in the release notes for 0.9w-2 that

Quote
Note : At Attended Playback the time slider won't move during this means of playback

is it possible to have the digital time counter operable at least?

Secondly, when using the A-B feature in UNattended mode, if you have the Running Time OSD option enabled, the time display will start at the "A" point, but when the "B" point arrives and the play restarts at the "A" point again, that OSD Running Time continues merrily on its way rather than reverting back to the correct "A" time point. Probably a bug but worth a mention in case you hadn't noticed.

Russ

Regarding Vista: is having SP2 is OK? or SP1 is better?

I'm running SP2 on my Vista Ult X64 music system and haven't noticed anything to make me think it's an issue.

Nothing like that ever showed up here Peter.

The product seems to be part of LogicNP's "megapack", but as to what that's all about I can't help. Presumably it will make more sense to a .Net developer.

OK, then I will go with Vista HP.

BTW, after installing Vista (I plan to vlite it first) when in Device Manager you uninstall some unneeded device, does it get installed back automatically on next reboot? If yes then how to make it not to install back automatically?

Ivo

There are two ways that immediately come to mind to achieve what you want. Firstly, if initially prompted to install a driver for something you don't want to use (for example the onboard ethernet feature that you choose to leave enabled in the BIOS due to running a dual boot environment ), then choose the option that says "do not install at this time" and "do not prompt again for this device" ( or words to that effect. Going on memory here! ).

Second way is simply to choose the "disable" option when right clicking on an entry in the device manager. That should stay intact across reboots OK.

Give it a try.

Cheers,

Russ
