256  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: 0,9z installation not possible on Win7 64-bit Ultimate PL on: May 30, 2010, 10:45:09 am
Color scheme ? I mean that text and icons have darker background that the background iself, which is brighter.

I have that issue here also on my x64 install of Win7. Probably a glitch in the .net libraries or something like that.

Other than minor issues like that, XXHE works fine under x64 version.

257  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: 0.9z - GUI graphic glitches on: May 30, 2010, 10:39:53 am
I've just tried it on a another PC and similar anomalies are occurring.

"panel glitch_left" shows the condition immediately after starting XXHE (or coming back from unattended) .

"panel glitch_right" shows the condition following a minimise command.

Note the characteristic of the vertical resize bars has changed, which might be a clue.

Even clicking on the "set panel to font size" button made no difference.

re. #1 , it's not a biggie, but would look nicer that's all. Perhaps you could fudge things a little by putting a transparent border around the whole GUI so that when you maximise it you can still see everything.

258  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / 0.9z - GUI graphic glitches on: May 30, 2010, 06:01:56 am
Have found a few, and I suspect Peter is aware of them, but thought it worthy of listing them here. If others have discovered additional ones, please chime in.

#1.  In maximise mode, the outer half dozen or so pixels are chopped off from all sides.

#2.  The folder art in left panel sometimes extends past the vertical "resize" bar between the left and middle panels. This error seems to occur on first startup or returning from UNattended mode. Minimising/restoring corrects that oversizing.

#3.  Following a "minimise/restore" toggle, the righthand data panel then extends to bottom of GUI screen and is thus overlayed by the lower grey subpanel that contains the "showdata" icon.

Cheers,

Russ

However I can't get alt-t to work to bring the screen back up.

Also where can I select attend/unattend mode. Now that I installed autohotkey, it seems that
the program is automatically in unattended mode all the time?

Alt-T is a toggle command, ie. it flips the active/inactive state, and it's my understanding it's not meant to take you back to the GUI when in unattended play. That is the purpose of Alt-X.

The icon for UNattended/attended mode is directly beneath the PLAY button. By using Alt-T you should see the red indicator light on left of icon switch from red (active) to blue (inactive)

Hi boleary,

that Tag.exe was compiled over 7 years ago now and wouldn't incorporate the publisher coding that Micro$oft likes everyone to include. My advise would be to take the tick out of the "Always ask before opening this file", then click on  "Run". You shouldn't be bothered again by that message following that course of action.

If you really want to know what it does, simply google Tag.exe , and read all about it in places like hydrogenaudio.org forums.

Ok ... and when this happens, did XXHighEnd come up automatically after Unattended playback ?
It should ... (after some 15 seconds or so).

In my instance of that subsequent error the GUI was waiting for me after UNattended play finished the last track. I can't say for certain how long it took for GUI to come up as I wasn't paying attention to music server at the time. Within 15 seconds sounds about right under normal conditions though.

Russ, what I don't see in your sequence is

- I brought up XX again.
- I quitted it.
- Brought it up again.

The bold lines are necessary in such a situation, because it clears the (apparently) wrong cache data of something.

The error message you saw in a flash must be unrelated, because I see it too, and all goes right after that. But might you be able to capture that error, I will be the most happy to know what it is ... yes

Thanks,
Peter

sorry Peter ... I wrote the abbreviated version of events  Grin

I did close down XXHE a few times and retried, but to no avail. I've seen that exception error pop up from time to time also, and I don't think it was one of those. The difficulty I had identifying the exact message contents was partly due to the text in the message being the same colour as the background. Casting my mind back to the event, I "think" i noticed ChangeWP consuming a heap of CPU cycles when I went looking into the process manager to check what might have been happening.

If (when) it happens again I will activate full logging and see if anything turns up thereafter.

ciao,

Russ

Something very weird just happened. I've been listening to Diary of Dreams album when suddenly the sound disappeared. OK, I start XXHE again, push stop and play again - nothing. Looking for process in task manager, nothing strange. I change the sample rate, try to play a test tone in playback devices properties - dead silence. Quick restart, hit play in XXHE and get horrible distrortions followed by To many buffer errors window.

I just experienced a similar situation.

I had an album playing in UNattended mode and it completed OK. 5 or so minutes later I went to queue up a fresh album, hit PLAY, and when the GUI disappeared a flash of a error message appeared, but happened so quick I was unable to read it. Thereafter I was greeted with silence. No coverart or anything was forthcoming. ALT-X'ed back to GUI and tried again with similar results. Tried same album in attended mode and still silence. Went into control panel but couldn't even produce test tones from "Sounds" applet.

So whatever happened during initial error, it mangled the resident audio driver code. A quick reboot and everything back to normal again.

Couldn't find anything amiss amongst the system logs either which might have identified that error message.

Will continue to monitor.

Cheers,

Russ

You entered the world three years old, and I've watched you develop from a raw temperamental bundle of coding, to one of stability and maturity. You have developed some unique skills along the way, and you have your own way of doing things which might frustrate some outsiders who haven't got to know you fully, but most importantly, your voice is now unequalled amongst your peers.

Well done, and I'll look forward to the day you come of age, which shouldn't be too long now, according to the proud father!

I'm sure all your friends here will join with me in wishing you all the best.

Best wishes,

Russ

Smells like an oily substance that eminates from snakes.

I suspect the only purification that will happen, is to your wallet, as your hard-earned money is removed.

I had a good laugh while reading thru that site so thanks for the link.

267  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: moving XXHighEnd on: April 28, 2010, 12:03:47 am

When the re-install is needed can I move XXHighEnd from C to the D partition, format the C partition and re-install Windows and move XXHighEnd back from D to C?

A couple of things to note when you do this Wimck:

  • The network name (and environment) will need to be the same as previous, otherwise you'll be asking Peter for a new unlock code.
  • Your previous XXHE settings won't be available to reference, as they are stored in the "Documents are Settings" sub-folders, so you will need to manually set those up again.

I don't think the effort to move your current working XXHE folder across to D: and back again is warranted, as it will be just like setting up a new version anyway, so you might as well use that approach by grabbing the latest "install" zip when the time comes.

In the meantime, just make a copy of your current XXHighEnd1xx.dat file on your D: drive somewhere for safe keeping, then subsequently copy it your newly created XXHE folder when you have resurrected your C: drive.

If, on the C: drive, you have your galleries structured by different genres etc. that don't mimic the actual folder structure of the music files themselves, then you should copy the gallery across to the D: drive in preparation for a re-install of your operating system. If your gallery is on the D: drive currently then nothing needs to be done.

Cheers,

Russ

I could write a bit about 'listening' to equipment and I will probably do a much longer post on it one day.  Suffice to say I am not that big a fan of it despite the fact everyone says its what you should do.  One reason is you can be easily fooled - and I have been.  I tend to trust guys who listen to a lot more stuff than I do and who technical skill is beyond reproach.

G'day Bill,

that's an interesting approach to choosing equipment, however, it's not one I adhere to.

I would rather suffer the consequences ( if they occur ) of making a fool out of myself, than have someone else make a fool of me. If I am going to buy a wheelbarrow, I like to push it first !

Music enjoyment is a very subjective and emotional game, and while there may be others that share ( to a degree ) your philosophy on sound reproduction and techniques, and can offer some insight as to how certain combinations work together, I think it is limiting to one's enjoyment if you rely exclusively on others to make the choice for you.

It takes a little effort to train yourself to recognise specific aspects of sound reproduction, but it's not beyond the capability of the average audiophile given a little guidance.

Just my 2 cents worth for the moment,

Cheers,

Russ

BTW ... a friend recently suggested "Rapigel" as being very helpful in reducing the effects of arthritis and muscle pain. Widely used in the sporting world apparently. Do some googling about it.

As for posting the screen I don't really know how to do that because in all the years I have been using PC I have never had reason to do it.

This should help Bill ...

Hi

Just downloaded the demo version XXHighEnd to check it out on my desktop PC (not my audio pc which I haven't set up yet).  Got around the 8.3 name error by changing the registry.  However whenever I play anything I get no sound then after a while a no track given error appears.  Since this is just for checking out purposes I have not connected a dac or anything like that; simply using the motherboards soundcard.  Anyway hoping someone can help with whats going on.  The main thing I want to do at the moment is check it out.  I am trying to decide whether to go for a Windows or a Mac as my music server.  Personally I prefer a Windows set up, but the posts I read all seem to say get a mac mini.  I am not 100% convinced about this.

Noticed someone else had a similar problem and it seems to be associated with nothing appearing in the KS Mode box.  I have nothing there and it does not matter what I try I cant get anything to appear there.

Tried using an older version of the software.  Still got the same problems.  So reinstalled the latest version.  Now I still have no sound but now get out of memory error.

Thanks
Bill

Bill,

can you give us a quick rundown on your desktop PC's components? O/S , CPU type , Ram , Motherboard's sound device should be sufficient for the moment.

In case you haven't read it yet, the "Installation Guide for Dummies" ( http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=833.0 ) is a must read initially. I would presume you have but thought it necessary to check.

The lack of entries for KS in the setup page is likely due to limitations of the on-board sound device ( or drivers ).

We'll get you going before too long Happy

Russ
