272  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: Juli@ Modifications on: April 14, 2010, 10:31:46 am
Well I got off my backside this afternoon and hardwired a 75ohm coax lead onto the card, thus negating the need for that breakout dongle that kept falling out whenever I moved the PC. Doing it this way also negates the need for an additional socket/plug combination.

Tricky part was how to secure the coax cable so that it wouldn't break off from the solder pads when inserting card or removing. I had thoughts of making up a tiny bracket upon which to cable tie the coax, but ended up with an elegant solution of simply binding it to the legs of the middle header connection, using thin cotton yarn. Nice and secure. The coax cable looks huge when laid beside the little surface mount components .. haha

Russ

273  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: What are those ... in XX GUI? on: April 03, 2010, 05:32:48 am
Ignore response to question 1 above .....

You are referring to the FLAC symbol which shows when playing those types of files.
Other formats will have their unique indicator shown.

274  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: What are those ... in XX GUI? on: April 03, 2010, 05:15:54 am
Hi,
I wasn't able to find an explanation of two items in the XX GUI. Maybe someone can explain this.

1) There is a small graphic of an "f" with green, yellow and red dots next to the volume slider. What is it? It's not always there, and don't know why it disappears sometimes.

2) There is a small green bar at the left edge of the GUI next to the Double and Quad buttons. What does it mean? It turns green sometimes when I select AI upsampling.

thanks
PietPara

For an answer to 1) , I think you may be referring to Volume functionality, but not sure where the "f" comes into it. Release notes in here ...

edit: see next reply

For an answer to 2) , have a look at the second bullet point at the top of the release notes here ...

As a general rule, Peter uses a sequence of colours to indicate the state of a command being processed. Trying to remember some of the lesser used ones is where it taxes the grey matter .. hehe

275  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: not getting further with double or quad on: April 03, 2010, 04:47:12 am
Special mode with Quad Arc Prediction remains difficult for my setup - I have to set the buffer to ~200 to get a clean signal. This is substantially higher than Peter's 22 samples... or Russ's 1 sample! (or is it 2 samples nowadays?).

I've been flipping between 2 and 1, but most of the time it is 1. By processing all the tracks before play starts , and disabling the OSD, I found the occurrence of the occassional click/pop is only every 5 to 10 minutes or so. It depends on the album as to whether I actually notice these or not. Fair to say that quiet passages are more susceptible to hearing a click.

277  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: OSD Timer and its influence on: March 28, 2010, 01:18:33 pm
So, "thanks" of course, instead of accusing you about whatever. It was not meant like that, and I was merely joking around a bit.

I think I understand your humourous side by now Peter and I didn't read anything into your comments, other than a little tease. It's a common occurence to forget things when one approaches 100  teasing

OffTopic
The GP was a huge turnaround from a spectator point of view from the last race. I reckon the FIA should retrofit sprinklers to all tracks now. At first glance I thought Webber's late race mishap was caused by an frustrated Hamilton trying an over aggressive overtaking attempt, which dragged him into it, but post race, Webber apologised to Hamilton for running into him. He blamed lack of downforce while braking the reason for it, and he was simply following too close. Mark should have known better though.

I was glad to see Button get the win as he deserved it by being the smoothest driver that nursed his tyres.

For the next race I would like to see Fernando get the win, and every one after that  Grin

Hey Russ,

As happens more often, you may have been fast on the downloads, but slow on the reading of the Release Notes yes.

haha ... guilty as charged about the fast downloads, although I do read through your release notes diligently each time, quite often more than once. I vaguely recalled mention of the OSD Timer's "frailty" back in January, I think it was, when you first introduced your revolutionary KS playback model, and at the time everything seemed fine in that regard, with respect to the timer.

It wasn't until the ultra low latencies were achievable that I noticed some irregularities, and my post above is more a form of feedback to you.

I like the idea of a progress bar, and if you can achieve it with minimal system disruption, it will be used here for sure.

Thanks as always,

Russ ( the couch potato during today's Melbourne Grand Prix telecast )
279  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / OSD Timer and its influence on: March 27, 2010, 04:08:53 pm
Since the advent of KS Special Mode and it's very low latency capability, I have been tinkering with settings trying to eliminate the low level clicks and plops I have been hearing when initially hitting PLAY, and then occassionally throughout the play sequence. Up until a few days ago I had always had the OSD Timer showing, but on a whim disabled it. The improvement was immediate and noticeable. No longer was I getting the clicks for the first 5 seconds or so on initial playback, and the occassional low level click has been reduced to one every 10 minutes or so. Not perfect, but I figure it may be attributed to the very low Q1 and buffer setting I use. I would NOT want to change those settings ... they are here to stay!

For me then, the OSD Timer is a no go, and it's disabling may well help others experiencing occassional clicks.

Peter, if it's on your agenda to look into an improvement for this feature that would be great. My use of the OSD Timer was only for a rough idea of where I was in the track, and never used it for critical timing information. Even if it only updated every 10 seconds or so, it would be suitable for me. I expect the problem I am experiencing eminates from the screen update happening at a critical system time. These low latencies probably don't allow much margin for error in timing.

Cheers,

Russ ( still with a huge grin revelling in the sound )
280  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / How To attach Screen Shots or Log Files on: March 23, 2010, 07:05:08 am
By the way can someone guide me as to how to get the screen shot & post it on the forum.

G'day Arvind ( and others ),

on your keyboard you should find a key labelled "Print Screen" or similar. This key may also be labelled as dual function, in that you have to use the SHIFT key to perform the upper function, but that is something you will need to determine yourself of course.

When you press this "Print Screen" ( or hold down the SHIFT key while pressing it if needed ), a snapshot of the desktop is storaged in your clipboard.

If you then open up the standard "Paint" application ( normally residing in the Accessories menu ) , and choose the "Paste" option , you should see an image of the desktop appear. From here you can simply save it in its entirety, or edit it to show just the area needed using the "crop" function. The latter is handy when all you want to show is an error message window.

When you have your image saved in a folder you will later remember, you can then proceed to attach it to the bottom of a posting reply.

When replying to a message ( or starting a new one ), you will see " + Additional Options... " at the bottom. If you click on that text, it will expand to show a dialogue box , with a "browse" button that allows navigation to where you have stored your images , or log files if that is what you want to attach. If you want to attach multiple files, click on the "(more attachments)" text, which will open up further dialogue boxes.

When you press "Post" there will be a momentary additional delay while the files are transferred to the server here.

Trust it all works,

Cheers,

Russ

281  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: UI suggestions on: March 19, 2010, 12:33:32 pm
For small screens, the left area is too large. Therefore i suggest a smaller footprint for the album

hmmm ... if the left section is made even narrower, it will seriously restrict the number of characters displayed when browsing the listing in the galleries. As it stands at the moment, it's marginal at best when you have long titles to contend with. I find the height of the gallery listings a bonus when you need to rapidly scroll through it.

I agree that some of the buttons need a rethink for size an positioning though.

Peter has been hinting at some revamps to the GUI so I'll just sit back and see what comes out in 0.9y-9  Wink

Cheers,

Russ

I am liking the software very much, but can;t figure out what all the commands are for the autohotkeys- so far i have found alt-x to start xxhighend, alt-e to exit, and alt-n for next track - i cannot find the command for previous track...

Allow me to guide your fingers on the keyboard.

283  Ultimate Audio Playback / Playback Tweaks and Source related subjects / XXHighEnd installation -- an orderly approach on: March 08, 2010, 11:42:35 am
hey Folks,

there are a number of ways to currently "install" XXHighEnd as you may have gathered by now, and I offer my approach to help newcomers over this initial hurdle.

While it has often been said that you can simply dump the contents of a new release over the top of the existing one, that assumes that the files and layout of the previous release are all working well together. It may be the simplest way, but lacks the flexability to jump quickly back to earlier versions for comparison, or for trouble shooting endeavours.

My suggestion is to have a separate and uniquely named folder for each new version you try. Doing it this way allows you to start from a clean slate each time and may well avoid startup issues some invariably have with each new release.

At the bottom you will see the layout of my folder structure, with a main folder located right in the root directory. You will notice I use a common folder for the "Data". This Data folder contains items such as your Playlists, Favorites, Bookmarks etc., so it makes sense to only have one of it. I also have a copy of XXHighEnd1xx.DAT ( which is created when you advance out of demo mode ) kept outside the unique version folders. When you create a new folder for any later version, simply copy that XXHighEnd1xx.DAT into the new folder to unlock it.

Create a shortcut for XXHighEnd.exe onto your desktop and you're ready to go. If you have multiple shortcuts from the different versions, be sure to rename the shortcuts to uniquely identify which is which. Be aware that flipping from one version to another will entail a restart of AutoHotKeys.

You may also notice than in the listing of drives, that I use a separate one for the Galleries. If you have the funds aplenty, this would ideally be a SSD. Mere mortals such as myself who are budget constrained are limited to the fastest drive in our system. If you are technically savvy to understand partitioning, create one large enough to accommodate forseeable expansion. This will ideally occupy the outer edges of the disc platter, where data read/write are at their best. Having the first partition of any disc dedicated to the Gallery will ensure that will be the case.

If you aren't able to have a dedicated gallery partition, consider periodic defragmentation for the drive it currently resides upon. Some of the better commercial defraggers allow you to specify which files or folders get relocated to the sectors on the outside of the platter, where performance is best as I mentioned earlier.

In due course Peter will have a proper installation process developed, but in the interim I trust this example of possible folder layouts helps a little for those still coming to terms with it all.

Cheers,

Russ
284  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: CPU performance on: March 08, 2010, 08:07:17 am
hehe ... I did write in a "get out" clause that it "might" cloud judgements  whistle

Without the benefit of your extra logging features it is hard to judge exactly what is happening behind the scenes, but your logging extract had shed another light on that now. Interesting.

I've attached a CPU usage graph of my system FYI and comparison. I also get those regularly intervalled spikes as you can see.

Setting as per in signature.

Cheers,

Russ ( loves waking up to new versions )

285  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: CPU performance on: March 08, 2010, 12:36:28 am
An observation here if I may that could be clouding some judgements.

The amplitudes of these peaks we are seeing are influenced by the refresh rate of the graph. Go to the "view" menu, and drop refresh rate to low , assumming you were in "standard" by default, and notice the peaks drop considerably. Increase the rate to "fast" and observe the peaks are now more intense.

The mere act of having the CPU Usage graph active is causing those spikes as has now been surmised. Could it be implied that not having the CPU monitor running at all would flatten the peaks even more ? There is good cause to suggest that may be so.

Use the graphs as an indicative tool for sure, but the absense ( or presense ) of clicks and plops should be your final indicator that things are OK or not.

Cheers,

Russ
