1  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd PC / Re: Investigating a full linear PSU for the XXHE PC and NOS1 on: October 04, 2015, 01:40:00 am

I am edging along but it now sounds like I should pick up the pace.  I built one 5A supply and it tests fine but now I need to get in and build the rest of them as well as the motherboard control circuit for ATX startup and shutdown.  All of the parts are here except a proto board for the control board, which after two months in the post has been forsaken and refunded as of yesterday so I need to chase down another of those to really get the project happening.

Hi, Anthony

Could you  please share what kind of controler you're going to use for the ATX start and shut-down ?
So I can leave my DC/DC converter and the relays I am using now?
Thanks,
Ed

2  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: Silverstone card on: January 18, 2014, 11:58:32 am
Thank you, Peter,
The one you have, is a NEC, and that is important to know.
That's the one with the halucinating "drug" in it!

I will try thay one,
Ed

This seems not so easy ...

See below; Focus on the position of the crystal.

Let's call the first one A. This is the one I have. EC04-P. NEC.
http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=364&area=en

The next one we'll call B. I think this is aways named EC04. TI.
http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=332

Thrid one is C. This is EC04-E. NEC.
SATA Power connector, but again another layout.
http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=439&area=en

The confusing should only be between A and B and I don't think it is much guaranteed which one you'll get when you order either of them. For example, sites which show the card may show the picture of B while the box (with clear plastic) shows that A is in there.

Hi Nick,

The two different controllers are:

NEC uPD720201  and
TI TUSB7340, both used in the Silverstone model 4 card.

I wonder which one is used in the "wonder"card? Hahaha!
Maybe somebody can tell me, since I am really curious.
The one from Nec is , together with the 720202/00,  a popular couple used for a few years now. The TI controller has been put in the market medium 2013.
Ed

See what you mean, the links in the thread show two quite different looking card layouts.

http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=364&area=en

This is possibly the most unusual / interesting to take a look at is anyone has one to hand to post a pic of.

Cheers,

Nick.

Hi,
I wonder what makes this card so special in the beginning.
I thought it was the using of an IT controller, but in the later writings I see Silverstone using the NEC devices again.
What version are you all talking about?
Ed

Hi All,

I'm interested in trying a clock change out on the card but it would be good to take a closer look before jumping in. I was looking at the card in low res pictures on-line to try to spot any anything that marks out its implementation from other cards, but the pictures are not very useful.  The crystal and nest of components around it are one of the main areas I of interest because of the crystal implementation's ability to influence the cards audio performance.

Would anyone who has the card be able to post a hi-res picture of the crystal area ?

Many thanks,

Nick.

Hi,
It happend here a week ago. After trying to run a CD via the USB connection. Was only cureable by reinstalling XXHigh-End.
Happy again and will never try playing a CD ever! Hahaha!
Ed

Hi Ed,

That seems like it !
But I don't really understand what you did there. So, any baby steps for me which may copy this exhibit ?

- All was right;
- Then I ...
- When I next ...
- ...
- Then I saw the screen suddenly like this.

(and yes George, I agree it looks like having used [ S ] but that isn't the cause ...)

I just haven't the slightest imagination what can cause this.
Thanks !!
Peter

Peter,
I copied a Live recording I did to a "plastic"CD. It did not work on a laptop, so I put it in my Yamaha rip-machine, brought the PC to 'normal state' and tried to play the CD over the USB front connection of my audiocomputer using the 'windows mediaplayer'. That made one big mess off  XXHighEnd eventually. Graphics like you showed them and activation gone aswell.

What about some captions re the photo's. Presume its your wife showing good interest in loudspeaker cables for a HiFi wife. Mine would never go near anything like this preferring to go shopping for womenly things.

Would be good to see a photo of St Peter.

I've just quickly skimmed through this thread and would like to try the card myself. But the original eBay link is no longer current, and a general Google search isn't very helpful. So, where can one acquire such a card nowadays?

Cheers, Mani.

Hi Mani,

I ordered mine at: buychina.com.
Deliverytime about four weeks, Good price!
Succes,

Ed

This one should be easier, could not find it anymore!

Hi all!

This the first time I do Min. O.S. in W7.on 8.2.
I must say it does quite a lot with SQ!
Thank you for this (Best Ever) music player. ('music player' sounds far to cheap though!)
Back to listening....
10  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Not able to minimise OS on: March 01, 2013, 02:28:21 pm
Ed,

So, this Virtual Disk Service (which is "vds") apparently *is* not running. But why and how ? beats me. It should. That is, being in Normal OS it should.

Because this is not a normal situation (for Normal OS !!) maybe this will not (!) work, but try it :

Go via TaskManager and Performance tab and from there to the Services button. In the Services List, find Virtual Disk Service, go to Properties and in there set the "Disabled" you should see to "Manual" (or "auto", also good). Next Start the service (there will be a button for that).

But if there is more going on this won't work. And next ? no clue.
But let me know what happens.

Peter

PS: Which OS is this ?

PPS: Are you sure you are in Normal OS ? this can be VERY confusing with the OS in this state of yours ...

PPPS: You can always press Yes on the last message you layed out. It may even be better regarding my PPS above. And when that works go back again. Then all should be in a consistent (and understandable) state.
Hopefully. Happy

Hi Peter,

What worked eventually was NOT making the backup and answering Yes in the last message.
I can undo it as well and go back no 'normal state'.

(I did not want to continue at first because with W8 I was not able to get back to standard O.S. mode and had to setup XXHighEnd from the start including the Activating thing!)

Hey Ed, don't start doing strange things which undoubtedly are unrelated. But in any even start coughing up some decent message instead of something like "not making up a virtual disk". So, what this is literal message you receive, and exactly when do you receive it ?

Peter

Hi Peter,

The first message after clicking "Minimise O.S" is:
Create Restore Point!

The second message is:
Restore Point can not be created because the Virtual Disk
Service is not running. This can be the case when your system is in Min. O.S. mode! (?)

Third message is:
Continue anyway? (Yes or No)

Than I nod my head from left to right and reversed and choose : "No"
And thus I am back at the first step...

Any idea?
Thanks, Ed

Hi Ed,

About the backup - does this message pops from the taskbar (at the right) ? If so, this comes from Windows.

As for the Virtual disk... Do you have a playback drive defined in your settings ?

Alain

I think I have to (re)read the manual a few times and find the solution. I understand that a ram-disk could do the job as well. I'll dive into it tomorrow,
Thanks for now,

Ed

Hi Alain,
I just updated my signature. Was about time!
I don't have a playbackdrive defined. And it is not a windows message. So I need an extra HD or what?
Until now I always worked like this,
 being happy...hahaha!
14  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Not able to minimise OS on: March 01, 2013, 01:22:22 am
Did you activate and minimise the OS?

I am not able to minimise OS. Program says : make back up first. OK! But than it tells me I did not make up a virtual disk??
This did not happen in W8. What to do?
Thanks for a solution,
Ed
