1  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd PC / HQPlayer on XX PC on: May 19, 2016, 05:46:44 am
Anybody (except Mani, who's traveling) run HQ at all?  I want to run it for one reason only: I have a huge amount of DSD material (downloads, SACD rips, but mostly my own DSD128 vinyl recordings).

So, it doesn't work, on my Phasure PC with the Phasure DAC, and I can't figure it out.  Here's what I get:

- With WASAPI, Phasure selected as device, it won't even play
- With ASIO, Phasure selected as device, the player plays, but there's no actual sound output

I've tried all permutations of 2-wire (which you can't turn on with ASIO) and the XX switch on the DAC up or down.

(Why try up?  Cause from the Mac Mini server I no longer use, HQ worked fine with the NOS1A, and I even got 768 Khz to work using 2-wire in HQ with the XX switch on the DAC enabled.)

I have tried launching HQ (only) after a fresh reboot in case running XX first was affecting it, but that does not help.

And this HQ install from this same Phasure PC worked fine with another DAC I had here recently.  So it's not like the player install is just broken.

Maybe it's time to reinstall the thing.  But I doubt that would do it either.

So, if anyone has HQ on Windows working with the Phasure DAC, please let me know if there is some secret, or something I may be missing.

Ah, I see: Method 1 bypasses auth altogether.  Yeah, not good.

Hi Paul,

You have to set automatic log-in into your (headless) audio-PC.
Follow this link and read / apply 'Method 2": http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-automatically-login-in-windows-10/

George

Indeed that must be the little nugget missing!  Thanks.

EDIT: I have to ask, why won't Method 1 work?  (Best not to touch Regedit unless necessary, eh?)

Do you have something like an iPad around ? At least that is used by people (did that over here as well). So if you have the same issues with that, it must be some pilot error.

Also, people don't have much reason to control XXHighEnd remotely by a Mini or something (at least that is what I think). IOW, we might not have the experience you seek. With an iPad (or other tablet or even phone) this is a different matter.

I'm using my Mac laptop, as I've said.  I've never indicated I was trying to control the PC from a Mini - what I have said is that my former music server was a Mini.  The Mini is in the box now.

All kinds of people use Mac laptops around the house, of course.  They are hugely popular, at least in this country.  I prefer a laptop to a tablet as its far more versatile.

I'd say that Remote Desktop (for Mac) is just that, but maybe it is not. You are using the Microsoft product, right ?
RD is working as smooth (if not smoother) than RDC itself. Also on Android.

Yes, Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac.  (As for the "RDC" acronym - perhaps that has a different meaning!  My bad there.)

PS: No, "we" don't need to log in. Only a first time, but check (somewhere) that asking for the Credentials should not happen a next time.

This is what I'm talking about: If I have the monitor (that I still have connected to the Phasure PC for the time being) on, and logged in, *when I start MS RD on the Mac that session on the PC is closed*.  The monitor goes back to the login screen.  So clearly the system is not allowing simultaneous control or simultaneous login.  This isn't necessarily good or bad; just an observation.

So, I don't think I have an odd use case here at all, but probably I am missing something regarding Windows/Remote Desktop.
5  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd PC / Rebooting with RDC on: May 18, 2016, 06:13:05 am
When I reboot the machine via RDC, RDC cannot connect again until I log in directly.  This means that I cannot run it headless, or at least have to connect a monitor & keyboard when rebooting.  This seems most inconvenient - is there a way around it anyone knows?

(Yes, I'm a Windows newb, having used nothing but Mac OS X for over 10 years now.  Macs do not behave this way with Screen Sharing, but then it's apparent that RDC is fundamentally different than Screen Sharing: With RDC you're actually logging into the machine again, not just controlling the screen remotely.)

I see, but I know MAC has different settings for mouse and trackpad. I am unsure if activating the two finger tap for the trackpad also activates the right click for the mouse. I could easily be wrong but I don't think it does actually (I use both a trackpad and a mouse and I have to set the options separately). Could be worth a try I guess to just connect a mouse to the MAC activate the relevant option for the mouse and see what happens to the RDC.

Hans

You're implying that RDC will actually make use of mouse settings even when a mouse is not connected (it won't be in normal use).  I kind of doubt that's true, but maybe - RDC seems to be a strange beast in many ways.  I'll give it a try.

Sounds like you should try activating "secondary click" for your mouse on the MAC. I have a MAC and I can right click the mouse because I have that option activated. Right clicking (with this option activated) replace the ctrl click on your MAC and presumably also on your RDC connection.

You can find this option under settings and then mouse.

Seems worth a try to me since the fact that you mention ctrl-click to use sort of tells me that you do not have that option activated.

Hans

I use the trackpad, not a mouse - but it has the same option, and I have it enabled (always did).  The two-finger tap just has no effect on the Windows side.
8  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd PC / Re: Windows RDC From Mac on: May 16, 2016, 08:10:08 pm
So... one teensy little hurdle left here.  I can't right-click from RDC on my Mac.  This means I can't do things like:

- Select tracks in the play list, right click, and remove
- Use the right-click menu on the Save button

On the Mac (native), ctrl-click is right click.  This does not work in Windows over RDC.  I have scoured forums and Googled and tried every damn thing to get this silly little thing to work.

So, if anybody is using RDC on a Mac to control their Phasure PC and you've figured out how to transmit a right-click using the Macbook keyboard/track pad, please do enlighten me.

At first I thought those two vases in the background were two DHTs poking up out of the case ala Modwright, etc. Happy  Peter, if you built a "DHT-PC", you'd be guaranteed to sell a ton of them... it doesn't matter what (if anything) the DHTs would do...

FYI, I got this to work, by following directions here:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/1523bbbd-e1f1-43f6-8efe-fabe732fa487/problems-connecting-to-windows-10-with-mac-remote-desktop-connection?forum=winRDc

Even though I had just downloaded the RDC client the first one I had was not compatible with Windows 10.
11  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Ripping on: May 14, 2016, 12:36:22 am
What software do people recommend for ripping in conjunction to XX for playing?

I did a search here and nothing really on this going back to 2010.

(I've been a Mac guy for music servers going back 10 years - not familiar at all with Windows rippers.)

I hit the Village Vanguard in NYC two nights ago for Steve Coleman (absolutely amazing show) and am happy to report no major "disconnect" upon returning home and listening to the system tonight.

For me, the XX/NOS1A combo is the first digital that has eliminated all traces of digititus.  It just isn't there.  This is a huge achievement.

I may dismantle the turntable this weekend, actually, so I can fit the Phasure PC on my rack.
13  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Dead in the water... on: May 10, 2016, 05:49:07 pm
Meridian 200 CD transport(upgraded clocking), Illuminati BNC interconnect and Benchmark DAC 1(Upgraded power supply and output chips). I mainly listened to blues rock(anything from Hendrix to Jeff Beck), now jazz fusion, nu jazz, electronic, drum and bass and even dub step.

I had the Benchmark long ago and found it nowhere near good analog; in terms of naturalness it was not close to even any mid-level vinyl setup (though obviously it would "beat" it at the frequency extremes; etc.).  To each his own.
14  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Dead in the water... on: May 10, 2016, 03:19:13 am
Gosh I had a 20k vinyl setup 15 years ago and my best CD setup beat it $10k then my 5k laptop computer audio beat that, now gosh beyond master tape(the old reel to reel tape).

BUT a chronic shortage of good recordings still prevails in any format.

Robert

Please tell me what that digital setup was 15 years ago; I am curious.  Are you speaking of the same thing I was - acoustic music recorded in analog?
15  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Dead in the water... on: May 09, 2016, 05:56:12 am
Tonight my wife picked XX/The NOS1A over my $11K vinyl setup (with a snazzy new $5K phono stage) playing acoustic jazz 45s vs. the commercial *redbook* version on the DAC, blind.

She's always preferred vinyl.  Always.  Just like me.

This setup is amazing.
