update: Checking or unchecking WS 10 services does not make any difference for either problem: anything above xQ1=3 still stutters; and Q5=1 still hangs the RD connection, or even the PC. Tweaking continues.

All my files are copied to WAV on a local usb drive first, so I never needed the LAN to persist. And I prefer not to, as it may have an effect on SQ.
I will try to uncheck the W10 services when I find the time...

I only have 2 cores (i3 6100T) and the only core assignments I can choose are 'No Appointment' or 'Core 1-2'. I chose the latter.

It now seems that the RD problem is related to the Q5 setting: Q5=0 no problem, and Q5=1 RD connection disappears.

And as to stuttering, this seems mostly related to the xQ1 setting. I can get no higher than xQ1=3 stutterless. So now the closest I can get to your settings is:

Q1 x xQ1 = 30x3.
Q3,4,5, = 1,1,0.
SFS = 20.
ClockRes = 15ms.
Custom Filter = Highest for 705600.
Appointment Scheme Core 1-2.
OSD Text = Off.
Wallpaper (front and back) On.

Strangely enough, when I choose Q3,4,5, = 1,1,1 the RD connection is immediately killed after Play, but with Q3,4,5, = 0,0,0 (and the rest the same) the RD connection stays OK.
So there seems to be some relationship between the issue and the Q settings?

However apart from getting stutters, the Remote Desktop connections is killed immediately after hitting Play.

Any suggestion how I can tweak the above settings, get a bit of the advantage, without the stutters/disconnection?

oh and Peter, I may still have a Windows 10 build 14393 Education edition lying around. Would that work? It may have extra functionalities, but also lacks some, which could be a good thing. For instance, no Cortana on the Education version, I believe.

After using XXHE for some time under Windows Server 2016 (with some quirks), I recently installed Windows 10 build 15063. So far so good: the sound is almost as good, and I did not try changing any SQ-related settings yet.
However, after playing in Minimized OS unattended, when the screen comes back up after pressing Alt-X, I see only non-textual elements of XXHE, and also of other programs. Almost all text (including button text) has disappeared. See screenshot.
Is this a known problem for build 15063? Any way to solve this?

Agreed Peter. I appreciate it that you spend time on WS2016 without running it yourself, and still made it work pretty close to 100%.

If I remember well, it was an occasional blue screen which just froze when I tried to stop or restart the pc, with the 'waiting circle'.
I then had to hard-shutdown.

Do you advise to go back to 2.08d? If I do I can give you a more precise description.

Alas, I am going on holiday Saturday for 2 weeks, and it is extra busy right now, but I will try to make some time for this.

Alas, there are only very few (and some somewhat obscure) tools that can pack DSD as DoP.
VinylStudio works but is a little awkward as it is 'collection'-based and expects to work with existing albums.
Maybe someone knows of any alternative?

OK here goes:

I took a DSD file and used VinylStudio to convert it to DoP. This is not an actual conversion but a lossless re-packaging of the DSD. The DSD stream remains intact, although encapsulated in a WAV container. Then I played this 'WAV file' – so actually a disguised DSD file – with XXHE into a DSD-only DAC. At first there was no sound, but after putting the volume slider at 100% and removing upsampling: voilà, music!

Does it make sense?

I am thankful to pm325 on the ComputerAudiophile forum for pointing me into this direction.
