Can a PC realy read the data accurately from CD? is the name of your topic

It should be "can a CDP read the data accurately from CD?" answer is NO it colors for starters, maybe one could like the colloring comming from it, is another question.

Is the Accuphase just used as a transport or as DAC too ?
the Hiface is not a DAC ! its a just usb/spdif converter-->> outputting to a DAC.

So my advise is: why trying all different CDP's and not even get your ears on a proper soundcard (Hoerwege ???, dont say its bad just dont know it, usb has also issues as you know)
It all depends a lot on a decent soundcard (and drivers) to get proper digital from your PC.
Good soundcard is of atmost importance.

keep sharing your experiences, hope you'll find your way in pc playback

Regards,

Roy

I also don't beleave I have a major mistake in my PC setup...

I think you do with all respect, maybe DO swap that usb/spdif card with a HiFace bnc or tweak a juli@ with a decent BNC output.
lots of people tend to forget that you can try stuff before buying, just buy a hiface or juli@ if you dont like it just send it back, you will get refund.
You have consumer rights you know, make use of it

I have a pretty cheepo setup, all a little tweaked offcourse, and for me the opposite occurs, a CDP is sounding flat and PC playback does not.

No CDP can bring the sound I have right now, no fricking way.

I dont even recognize flat as such, I have full sound, good and fast bass.

But he thats just me!

Other subject same section,

There is also a program, to get accurate rip results out of your lossless torrent files.

It sees every folder in your download location, like an original CD (When original EAC cue and log are present in that folder)(can read logs from other ripping programs as well)
It can even correct the original drive offset (when this was not done or forgotten on the original EAC rip)
The more I use this program, the more I think offsets DO matter. (but it can be a placebo too)

Its called cuetools, best program I've used so far.
http://www.cuetools.net/doku.php/cuetools:cuetools

- can recognize and correct drive offsets (can do this be a simple setting, so no hassle)
- AccurateRip support
- it can recognize a HDCD as such.
- its fast, because it can also use FlaCuda to convert your lossless files to FLAC, this is a Nvidea operation using your videocards API's,
creating a file smaller than FLAC8 (not spectacular), and does this faster than libFLAC.(overhere (quad core) X 400 for flac  and wv files)(ape remains slow as ever)
- it creates folderstructure, depending on the tags.
- and does this all directly from your download folder, no matter what lossless file is in there (OK not all, but the most common used, check the link)
- and ofcourse batch encoding, so not just convert one album, you can do the whole bunch at once.

Really try it, it gets the job done
This is the missing link in getting your downloaded files properly on your music HDD.

So if you are ripping your CD's always save and keep the .log and .cue files in your folder, even if it is your end location.
DO KEEP YOUR ORIGNAL EAC logs and cue's with your music files for maybe future useage.

Roy

PS: one downside though, the CD has to be in the accurate rip database.

Flecko,

Its not about the ripping of CD's, its about the burning of CDR's.

All burned CDR's will probably sound different than the original pressings.
This is caused by the CD-Player itself.
This has nothing to do with EAC.
Try to rip the newly burned CDR to your hdd, and compare to the original rip (you will get same results)
My preferred settings are without C2, even if you have a drive that is capable of C2 correction, like my Plextor.

But why o why, would you still burn CD-R's ? (maybe for in the car) if you still hang on to this means you have probably other issues, then ripping problems.

OFCOURSE CDR's will sound different, thats why PC playback is the future.

Roy

Off course my first post is not completly true, and will come back from this.
Because good mastering cq re-mastering is a necessity.

But first do you know the in's and outs about Pink Floyd's, Dark Side of the Moon Recordings (Mastering)
Its just as complex as the music itself, so many versions, what mastering version do you have ?

Pink Floyd's Japanse first Pressings, but they are De-emphasized.
http://pinkfloydarchives.com/Discog/Japan/DSCD1/JADS1.htm

Peter, did already thought about a way to play these "First Pressings" in xx ?
Or was this already discussed on forum ?

Info about PF - DSOTM, did you know there were so many mastering versions,
I think I have them all by now, thnx to people whom put a pic of the CD matrix codes in their uploads.
Or you can take a look at the track-peaks

If pics are shown they are cached, even in sub folders.
You could try to disable the "showdata" setting. (or you already have)

Correct me if i'am wrong Peter !
247  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Thumbnail cache not working ? on: April 23, 2010, 06:32:42 pm
Telstar read it carefully ! (especially when doing the whole bunch at once)
Its all in Peters guide

Back-up the original covers (see guide), just to be sure (also to compare)

also:

Make Folder.jpg (Main Coverart) about <=1MB, 640x640 (or maybe the same setting as your unattended cover size)
Make other coverart (Showdata Stuff) <=1MB, 3000x3000 or maybe in your case leave 2000x2000

if covers are about 2-3 MB or bigger you have to resize, especially when you have like 10 of such big covers per album.

Thank Peter for it, he did great on this !

The Thruth About "Audiophile" Recordings

Hi All,

This is about Normal, MFSL, Remasters and SHM-CD Recordings, about "us" being fooled by the industry (probably again ??)

Some Background first, about the "Coloring" of CDPlayers
Some years ago I did a lot of CDR testing on a normal CDPlayer using original, Black, cheap metal, Gold and Taiyo Yuden Discs.
They *all* DO sound different, this has proven over and over again, certainly by me.
To me the original, gold and Taiyo Yuden discs sounded best. (used a the Plextor px-755uf drive for burning)

Now knowing this you can imagine, why a gold MFSL disc sound beter then the normal recording, but this is only the case on a CDPlayer
This also counts for the SHM-CD, its just the remaster on a SHM-CD disc (dont know exactly what material they use, but anyway)
So the SHM will sound different on a CDP player, compared to the remaster.

This is not the case with PC playback, because there is no "Coloring".
Its about the data being the same, you wont hear if it came from a gold or SHM-CD, thats BS !

After listening 2 full days to all different Alan Parsons recordings (offsets ARE correct, if this matter at all),
I can make the following statement:

Normal (first Release) = MFSL (its just the same stuff on a gold-cd) = ORIGINAL MASTER RECORDING

Remaster = SHM-CD (its just the same stuff on a alu??? recording)

I can imagine that on some recordings, mastering cq Re-Mastering is needed.

But its also better to stay away from (most) remasters, they are also "touched, infected"\
As Peter (also me by now) refers to as being Louder and "Compressed", not better, maybe it will sound better on a "cold" sounding CDPlayer,
but this is not the case with pc playback IMO

My conclusion for PC playback:

STICK WITH THE FIRST RELEASES, discard all MFSL, (most) remasters and SHM-CD's.
The one thing I learned durning the years, "if something shouts GOLD!, its probably and most likely just the same cr*p sold to you again"
(marketing guys were are you ?)
get rid of that habitat, magnum gold, master-gold card (does it make you feel better now), gold edition, mfsl gold etc

Even pure gold in the signal path doesnt sound good !

Had enough you gold diggers !

PS: This is just my opinion for now, I have files you can compare if you like, just PM me.

PPS:Is there a way to make an 100% spectrogram overlap of a track to compare, even when there is a difference in track length or offset,
would love to compare the results.

Anyhow, when I have many tracks or an entire album loaded in the playlist, after playing 4-5 tracks, XXHighend would start to replay some of the previously played tracks again, even though the track names shown at the right lower cornor of the program lists is the proper next track on the playlist.
If I press play button (while the incorrect track is playing), the music will jump to the proper track.

Wouldn't worry that much about your setup Suteetat
It happens here too, sometimes, more than I would like actualy.

250  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: The best amp and speaker setup for digital playback on: April 22, 2010, 06:05:15 pm
Just reading this topic again,

I think we are on the brink of a new age into digital playback all together.
The word will spread like fire, I dare to claim publicly,
There is no better CDP on this globe that outperforms a the decent pc driven by xx-HighEnd.

I can only imagine that when NOS1 releases a new standard into getting digital into analog emerges
This will redefine standards (and possiblities) for amplifiers, speakers and the whole chain behind/between it

So I dont hope it will just end here.

If I am correct we a working a kind chain here:

1. The whole subject about how to get the music ON your PC (EAC, DBpoweramp, Cuetools, accurateRip, audiochecker etc etc.)
Maintaing a music database - pretty well under control

2. How to get music OF your PC, using a well build and tweaked PC and ofcourse xxhighend software
And get it into your DAC - pretty well under control

3. next point, DAC --->> Peter's NOS1, will get it into proper analog, all explained pretty well by Peter his nice posts.

yea, IMO lets go on to nr 4, please

What I dream about and foresee in the near future, is when the whole sytem works as one chain.
And can be controlled by PC and software (xxhighend)

See it like this
for eg. a cd-rom drive has an certain drive offset--->> you know this offset (by reference)-->> you correct it before procedure-->> output will be zero offset (thus original)

Now see *this* in your audio-sytem,
with PC-playback you will be able to correct all certain problems like input/output differences in amps/speakers/crossovers/room-correction etc.
By knowing (measuring) the difference between input and output you can theoraticly correct this by software means (thus PC) before procedure (or coverting)
And get "zero offset" (thus original) out of your speakers.
This is tweakers heaven, my man !
No CDP can do that, rest my case.

Peter,

Can you tell "us" maybe a little more about the future after NOS1.
What further plans do you have or not have, hope you keep the community alive.
I see this all just as a decent starting-point.

Do you think you came to the end of your project or will this open up more projects.
I can say you made your point against the "standarized thinking" of how things should be approached.

Will Phasure make more products and/or projects available ?

Or do you take a long vacation ?

I dont believe you just can stop being an AUDIOPHILE  whistle

And to DannyD you never get bored around here, how come ?

Did you already tried adaptive mode, played with Q sliders and such.
showed of to friends,hehe

What about music ?
have nice suggestions in all genres.
Music never bores me !

252  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Thumbnail cache not working ? on: April 21, 2010, 09:35:26 pm
Maybe you turned off CPU caching in BIOS or something related, it happens on both your "fast" PC's
Must be related to your settings you made on both of your rigs.
This problem "lays Around" your cpu.

Did you resized all your coverart properly (folder.jpg) and other "showdata" stuff.
xx has bulk resize options now !
Check your thumbnail (library) settings
253  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Thumbnail cache not working ? on: April 21, 2010, 09:14:01 pm
PS: the thumbnails of the gallery do not cache completely. Scrolling the library is very cpu or gpu dependent.
this is what i meant in the gallery interface to be not responsive (cant find that thread so i'm writing it here).

Huh,

Telstar,
Cache-size on max (1920) and do you have gallery on SSD ?
Thumbs must be cached first (to the max of 1920), so scroll thru your genre once slowly till all is cached.
Next time you go thru that section, it will be lightning fast.

Do you mean this, your problem layout is sometimes a little on the short side, if I may say so sorry
I thought "we" (us users) were happy about gallery speed now, or do you still encounter lack of responsiveness ?

I have Quad core @ 3.40 and a 9800GTX (not optimal for audio), you have E5800 ? dual core and on-board (optimal for audio), this shouldnt matter that much, does it ?

yes Peter, it grows but doesn't seem to stop growing just runs to the rhs of the box, I'll give it a closer look and see what happens when taken to full screen size.  I was expecting the line to end at some predetermined application box size dntknw

Peter,

I recognize this problem, its about screen-size settings.
Because I use temporary a 2nd monitor with different resolution, I have this too.
The slider goes beyond the form, even on full screen.
Adjust the slider on screen size settings (resolution or width) in your code, Peter.

Mani.

First recognize the problem (if there is @ all), then maybe solving it.
How to know if a recording is made with a PM machine, anyway (besides from the HDCD's ofcourse)
