Hi Boleary,

I have a ESI Juli@ soundcard, And yes Its better to get a decent soundcard instead of using the on board one.
The on board one, sounds like Cr@p. (in my case that is)(even a cdp sounds better then that)

I really like the Juli@, It sounds really good and especialy for that price.

Also get W7, its much faster then Vista and maybe it sounds better too (I think it does)

Peter will say get a dual-core (just for audio), but if you are using it for other applications maybe get a Quad core.
452  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / For xp users get W7 instead of Vista on: October 25, 2009, 01:37:10 pm
To all new users:

Iīve you are still on xp, Donīt get Vista get W7 instead.
Its just better in combo with SSD.
And its overall much much better then Vista, believe me.

453  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Phasure NOS1 listening experience on: October 25, 2009, 01:31:36 pm
Hi all,

This week I had the opportunity to listen to the Phasure NOS1 DAC,
For me its only a 100 km drive to Peter's place, So I grabbed the change.
He also stacked the fridge with "some" beer, and said its no problem if I spend the night there.
So we played music all night, I believe it was 6 or 7 o clock in the morning, before I put my ears to rest.

I believe we played 10 to 12 hours of music, and tied to keep up with the technical stuff (stories, discussions) Peter came up with Wink

I've been to Peter before, about six months ago.
And had the change to listen to SPdif vs I2S and had my first NOS experience.

NOS is absolutly the way to go as many people know by now.
That combined with a decent connection like I2S or FireWire (FW), FW is still work in progress. (happy tweaking with your new proto-board, Peter)
Add the ARC upsampling to that.
And you have Best sounding DAC I've ever heard, Its not that good but its not as bad as the "rest" out there.
Its just clean.
And because its that clean, there is more place for music and yes I'am still discovering new things in the music I never heard before.
10 hours of listening and NOT A SINGLE PIECE OF HARSHNESS, not anywhere.
Even with music playing really loud, we could easely understand each other, without being annoyed by the harshness in the music.

I won't go into: what songs I've played and why, because I don't think I need (like) that, It needs to be good on all music, and it does.
So we took all kinds of music, there was a humble choice of 18.000 albums so............ hehe

Everything beyond this is new for everybody, for me too.
So I had to trust my ears, and I do, believe me I really do.

I LIKE IT, I LIKE IT A LOT

If this would be the end result I would be really happy with it.
But you know Peter by now, not taking this a step further.
But the overall sound will stay like this, I know for sure.

I wanna thank Peter and Ciska for there hospitality

Roy

Hi PNCD (Peter)

Sorry for my rude opinion, just trickering a response.

Quote
PS  I think SQ is a quest with no end, Roy.  CDs have problems.  DACs have problems.  Music production and mixing has problems.  Jitter has problems.  There is only so much XXHE can do to try and get a clean digital stream from wherever it is coming to wherever it is going.  XXHE is just trying to not ADD to the problems!

Agreed on that.
But CD-player is almost 30 years old, so we all try figuring out what is "next".
There is always place for opinions en suggestions, so............

Just rapping up my Library, man what a lot of boring work, but its on hdd's now, ready to be played.
Jukebox thats what it is, (where do I drop that Quarter?)

PeterSt, how does XX work on track-level, ayway
If I load 10 Tracks of 10 albums, do I get coverart with each track.(Guess not)
Can try this myself ofcourse, never had need for it, but would like to make some playlists.
Reference file list maybe, or best of, or best in genres and that shuffle is there too.
I will give this a try in the next coming weeks.
You have made adjustments for that.

Roy

Hi PNCD,

Sorry but FGS,

Start using it, it grows on you.
Just simply compare it with foobar.
Then you know why xx is here, and if you don't, just use foobar.

You will have to spend some time on it, and there are so much people willing to help you.
Just be patience, I have been there, believe me.

REWARD: All 16/44 material sounds like HiRez.

Just make decent albums/folders structure.

There is only one objective here, and thats SQ.
Things are running very smooth now IMO.

XX Rules good

Roy

IMO

The Attraction DAC is designed to be powered by a single 12V car- or motorcylce battery,
as battery power is pure, and a prerequisite for precision DA conversion. Power consumption is 200mA.

I see

Altmann Attraction DAC?

Hmm, you are being busy, looks interesting, how is that being powered.
It could be that simple, yes.

for so many years perceiving everything differently.

Thnx for your explaination.
This is the case for me indeed, and for many people more.
From now on it will be completely NEW.
How to compare, with what, with reality, I guess.

Still trying a way to find why ARC should be wrong, but I canīt.
Iīam not even sure about my DAC specs, but its just plain good
It is straight to the point, its me that should ajust, thats for sure.
I have to set my own merits right, I guess.
And I am not the only one.

How do instruments sound, and how have we perceived them for years out of our system.
This keeps me occupied for weeks, but this is very interesting.
Maybe try some classical music, next week.
Its not my thing, really, but now is the time  to give it a try.

Maybe some advise on certain tracks we do know,

and maybe even make an audiophile Top 20 test track list.
To determine some merits.

What to look for...................
461  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: 0.9y-4 - w00t on: October 11, 2009, 08:32:54 pm
Peter,

Can It be so that the sound is sometimes, to much center-focused instead of more wider.
too much pronounced in the center, can sometimes be overwhelming
You have the album by now, I guess, haha
track 8 is a good example, but again it can be just some tracks.

I think it has been said before, by someone.

thats all, still very happy with latest version.
Dry and tighdy basses, and the hights I can only say, WOW, this was never been there, this was missing from cd-player day 1.

HOUSTON WE HAVE REACHED MUSICALITY
462  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: Help me find a new DAC on: October 11, 2009, 06:10:37 pm
And in the mean time "learn" why a DAC is THAT important.

So don't be a BIG spender without understanding what it is you are looking for, I know what I want.
And aint about the money, Its the knowledge of the subject that can provide you with a decent DAC.
Lots of people, can help here.
What is right and what is wrong, by just some specs, I mean just listening is tough enough, as you know, and also do.

Hope Peter will succeed
463  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: Help me find a new DAC on: October 11, 2009, 04:47:19 pm
I think the ones you mentioned are also good price/quality.

But the NOS1 has some benefits I like, as a maybe digital filtering for speaker XO, that way I save up 1000 euros on x-over parts, anyway (maybe some sofware costs, OK)
No preamp hopefully, no modifying needed, update-able, REAL online service.
Looking forward to A WHOLE NEW project of connecting amps and speakers, haha Wink

This is all because I still have a "card-blanche", have nothing special right now, but really enjoying how xx makes it better and better.

Maybe I get one "in between" myself, because for me its a lot too, you know?
464  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: Help me find a new DAC on: October 11, 2009, 04:19:23 pm
IMO get a good "in between" DAC

I will, but I think the Phasure DAC will be more than I am willing to pay for a DAC, if 3-4k is in Euros.

Not implying that there is something wrong with the DAC you have, in the first place

This is still in beta stage, peter is learning from everyones opinion, respect your honesty.
Only then ''we" can learn.

But yea, ist in euros but I believe Peter said something around 3300 euro's (VAT ??)
Rediculusly much, I don't think so.

But do you have an oppertunaty in listen to the ones you have mentioned, don't buy without listen to them !!
465  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: Help me find a new DAC on: October 11, 2009, 03:51:30 pm
Hey Fidelio,

I can't wait untill I hear Phasure NOS1 DAC in combo with xx ofcourse.
It will be around 3k to 4k but it will be best price/quality out there.
For me thats a LOT of money, but I spend it wisely.

I'm looking for new DAC too, but I wait for NOS1 first.
I think its gonna be good, very good.

Peter is taking this to a whole new level, never seen someone working with this passion and dedication.(and so much "in house" knowledge)
He is doing this for himself, just himself, but willing to share this with all of us (audiofreaks)
This will set the standard.
No industry cutting costs somewhere, think about it.

IMO get a good "in between" DAC
