61  Ultimate Audio Playback / Music Storage and convenient playback / Secure Ripping on: November 13, 2010, 11:05:11 am
Today I bought an album,

And 2 problems during ripping are there at once, from which I thought it could be usefull to post them on the forum.

The first is about SECURE ripping with EAC,
Its important to use the "test & copy" function in EAC, meaning, to make use of CRC-calculations,
I had to rip the album TWICE, to get it right.
If you do not use test and copy, about 2-3 albums out of 50 are not SECURE, they have not the same CRC-calculations after test and copy.

Second problem is about albums that have pre-emphasis (not so many are)
While your rip is 100% secure it does have pre-emphasis on it, there is no problem if you just burn it and play it on a regular cd-player.
But this is NOT the case with PC-playback, the album needs to be de-emphasized, which is a lossy process by itself. (SOX can do this for eg.)
Thats why it is important to keep your logs and cue-sheets, because then you can recognize this by the "flag" in the cue sheet.

Better burn the ISO on dvd if possible,

Should give less problems, its (probably) not about a "wrong" vlite created vista, its about the way you install it........so burn it, then install.

I assume, you can make 2k Euro computer, but this is not the same computer as above. Of that I am sure.

Maybe without soundcard (comes with NOS1) and casing, but it will be better and most likely sound better too.
For me its about the sound not the bling-bling that comes along, which is not always a good choice for SQ.

But still nice to see the "highend" industry finally catches-up.

Not offending anybody, at all, but come on who needs all the extra's, you ?? do you really ???
Its for show....... "the audio show"

6K and on W7 ? its just a PC

I can offer (so can Marcin) a complete build for way under 2K, with only the best stuff on the market today, you wonder where the other +4K goes, haha

I though we just "auditioned" W7 a bit too long already.  Wink

Its best to stay away from any so-called optimizers, cleaners and scanners etc.

some are even counter-productive if you do not know what you are doing, or not know what the software exactly does
for eg.

- indexing
- bootoptimizers
- prefetch

are called optimizers too, while we DO turn them off.

Hey Geeky O'Leary  Wink, hehe

Its best to rip your vista image to hdd first, then make a copy of that image and save that as backup.
So start of with 2 folders 1 backup-folder and 1 to strip-down-folder.
This to avoid ripping vista to hdd each time you screw up a vLite version

Unless Roy comes out with some ISO already done, I'm going to try this with a Vista x64 ultimate SP2.

No time at the moment, working 12 hours a day already unhappy
I have a dutch version still, need to get a english version of vista first.

Like said before: just strip most of the stuff you dont need, set unneeded services to manual, go from there.
I would be nice to have a fully stripped version of vista, because it saves space, but i dont believe it makes sense for SQ
to fully strip vista, just eliminate the bad stuff.

Hi all,

Me also back at work, after a long period without a job.
 Happy

So have to take some steps back now, although i will follow everything closely.
But unfortunately I can spend less time on testing and such.

One more thing which may come handy for others at some stage :

I think I mentioned that disk light showing a flicker each second;
Well, I tested it in Safe Mode; no I/Os are there at all (when at last after (reboot/) 5-10 minutes all died out), but that flicker remains.
It must be something the mobo is doing. I don't know.

PS: Sound seems great to me ! A wealthyness of clarity, and -somehow- an enormous amount of hall in the room (not because of sound pressure; just at low level playing).

I have that flickering light each second too !

Sound is also the same as you discribe................

What a great sounding OS i have installed here, FABULOUS !
Untweaked even on spinning disc

I dare to say and try for yourself, but its SPEED that we're after. (CPU/RAM/mobo)
Overclock as much as you can, because the cpu wont get really hot, just dont over-volt too much.

XX is really responsive from this, meaning a 9min song wil play within a second. (dep on settings and needs)

And the sound:

well, how about a field of sparkles in a dome of sound, what a soundstage, hmm

What happened here ?

@ Special Mode 32 samples, SFS 12MB, Q 1,0,0,0,0
But to premature, will take more time to test further.

Peter, thanks for the fast reply on the new activation code, this get me going fast

I think I have a GOOD working Vista Install (vLite), with RAMDisk.

I mean really good sounding, felt the bass on my hands from meters away, could play very loud and have clean hights.

I think this is the foundation for further tweaking for me........most tweaks still needs to be done.
BUT with CAUTION.

Also changed some BIOS settings, like EIST off, and overclocked Q9550 @ 2.83 --> now @ 3.48, RAM also overclocked a little.
