Peter, I really don't like the idea of saving the image file a shutdown every time, not because of length of shutdown and bootup but because you never really know what you're saving particularly if things went somewhat wrong at some point during the session. So to avoid saving the image, and to avoid possible problems I could create a batch file that would save the xxdata folder to the HD at shutdown and copy it back to ramdisk after start up. What else should I copy to and fro that might cause problems if I didn't?

Chris

Things went wrong here too, saving a corrupted image, afterall loosing all data, but you can make a back-up of that image, smart thing to do anyway.
If all settles in well, then these problems wont occur that much.

Roy,

What dpclat are you getting from your tuned OS? This is not a hard wired indicator to music performance but it gives me a feeling for how far you have gone with tuning. Are you on vista? What have you stopped / done so far?

When settled what are max, min and estimated average dpclat scores ?

Nick.

He Nick,

You guys are a week ahead on me, I was 2 days at Peters and such, repairing hdd, setup vista blah blah.
Lot of catch-up to do

So I am around 13-15 us range on DPClat, on minimal services, applyed all yours and marcin's tweaks, but i am not sure if i did all.

But if you are working organized, you should kept a log right ?

I also did, so i want to compare reg, sys and windows settings, we also need a log when we want to write something to automate all these registry entries.

Best regards,

Roy

A question, a thought and a reply, not necessarily in that order. We'll see.

Peter, does XX copy only the currently playing mp3, flac, etc. file (or part there of) to the local directory/disk or does it copy the whole play list. If the former, would it not be an advantage for the purposes of the ramdisk to incorporate a function that allows for the copy of the whole playlist; so that all xx functions (or as many as possible) during a particular play session would take place in ram (possibly the originating disk could slumber during...).

XX does this only in UNattended mode.

Quote
RE saving the disk image. It is not necessary to set "save the disk image" at shutdown and it might not always be advantageous. I for instance prefer that my ramdisk be the same as when I set it up, and to change only when I make setup changes. To do this I can save it manually. Your ramdisk should not be lost, and will load automatically until you actually "stop it." Because ramdisk space is limited I don't want to clutter it up with anything unnecessary that might be saved at shutdown.

Chris

Yes, this could be to your own preference, it does save time on shut-down, but when all runs well, you dont have to do
several reboots a day, like most of us have done here in the last view days, when I shutdown after playing music I dont mind longer shutdown time,
This will get a little faster in different setup, be could also take longer if we need more RAM space.
Discusable, but also to your own liking

Yep, I keep the log, I'll share it during this weekend.

Yea, just to find out at what level it has effect, i mean on SQ.
Rule out placebo  Wink

Funny story:

I though I bring me own music to Peter and I (should) could trust my "local" programmer with my 2TB HDD full of precious music, thought wrong there, hehehe  Wink
While discussing another subject Peter asked: "should it be possible to connect a hdd when the PC hibernates/sleeps?".
This was a hard lesson you can NOT, well not on IDE.
I think it kept the previous connected USB card/or whatever in memory, PC came out of sleep mode, and OVERwrite my hdd mft/mbr with that USB file that still was in memory.

Peter feeling REALLY guilty, he was more shocked then i was, but still there where like 5000 albums on there.(no back-up, yet)
He spended several hours on it in maybe get it fixed somehow that morning, but I told him to spend time on the more important stuff, the stuff we came for ...AUDIO !

But afterall I managed to get ALL the data of my disc, I only needed the buy another hdd to write my fixed image to,
and some 10 hours work for my pc on writing data back and forth.

 smirk
hehehe, you may stop feeling guilty now Peter, hahaha

The going back to Vista and using RAMDisk are key and fundamental in our xx project,

I'am not really sure about appying all other tweaks, I did the whole tweaking in a bunch.
And did not get the same, BIG change feeling, like i did got from the RAMDisk change.

Nick or Marcin, do you guys keep a log of the changes you made ? can you share those with me.

82  Ultimate Audio Playback / Playback Tweaks and Source related subjects / Re: RAMDisk - Setup on: October 08, 2010, 02:14:11 pm
The best way the apply RAMDisk:

First set the partition-size and fat32, then do nothing, reboot (or maybe 2 times)

Then you have image space (extra hdd) on your RAM, then copy the complete xx folder to that location.
next, setup xx with all settings that are needed, including your key.

Then go to the second tab in RAMDisk, Load and Save, and press "Save Disk Image Now" and select checkbox "Load Disk Image at Startup"
Reboot

Then finally select checkbox "Save Disk Image on Shutdown"
Reboot

Its about all those reboots that are needed, but when up and running it will work nice.

Roy

PS: correct me if i'am wrong, I will adjust it.
83  Ultimate Audio Playback / Phasure NOS1 DAC / Re: World's first NOS 24/192 filterless DAC ? on: October 08, 2010, 01:54:15 pm
-A poor recording will show all the issues where they are as they are not "corrected" by filters or other means. Really poor recordings are unlistenable, and it cannot be otherwise if we are not adding or correcting anything. But so-so ones can be enjoyed or re-discovered (i.e. REM - Everybody hurts in the original release, way better than the remaster).

This is for me the MAIN problem, it can never be good (not anoying, enjoyable) without some kind of filtering.
Not to blaim this on Peter's DAC, but it is about those bad recordings the industry provides us with !!
almost all HiRez albums, 20-24bit remasters are "touched" in a cerain way during mastering. (bad filters etc), its destoyed "forever"
And ofcourse the usual not so good recordings because of recording equip.

The fact is i can provide a playlist, with all amazing albums, they while sound absolutly AMAZING, goosebumps etc
But I can also provide a playlist, with some "critical" albums, you will never play them again.

But there are "critical" albums that I DO like to hear, but they just sound bad

I think the NOS1 is very good (The Best !) its a superclean pipeline, but you have to judge the NOS1 on its thru merits (nl being filterless)

So in the end:

If we do not find some mains in software to "repair" those bad albums with smart filtering somehow. (they are destroyed anyway, so for the sake of god, they NEED to be filtered)

Those albums become onbearable, well, for me that is.

You wont play them again.

Also a tip for people who still think W7 sounds better, should maybe raise the db in their tweeters, by adjusting the resistors.

I modded many industry loudspeakers, including several expensive onces and its very common that industry lowers te output of the tweeter just a little too much
just to get that smooth sound as being reffered to (this for hiding flaws in their own audio systems), you got no details for sure,
otherwise it could never be smooth sounding.

Just beware of this....................
85  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: We all fell in the W7 pitfall on: October 07, 2010, 02:01:14 pm
Music should NEVER sound agressive, music should sound enjoyable ALWAYS, even with lesser sounding albums !

For now, and maybe never, w7 is NOT the OS you want to use for high-end audio playback.
When experience this thru a NON-filtering DAC like the NOS1, this becomes very obvious, I couldnt stand w7 for 5 minutes.
While enjoying Vista for hours and hours, but also only with RAMdisk. (very important)

Take a Piano part with high notes in it, being striked pretty hard, ..................its so obvious.

OK, by me  Wink

If all can be find just here, its FINE and works for me too !

Its gonna be a VERY nice topic then
87  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: We all fell in the W7 pitfall on: October 07, 2010, 11:09:45 am
Can we please make another topic on registry settings and such.
With the purpose of ending that topic, with some .reg files.
And ofcouse improvement in sound, AGAIN.
 Happy

Its fital to find the information that is shared fast.

PS: the same counts for the vLite thing that we got going.

Thank you
88  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: We all fell in the W7 pitfall on: October 07, 2010, 10:48:36 am
THANK YOU Nick, much appr.

You will get feedback from me and many others,
BUT, I will first get used to Vista and RAMDisk a little bit more, then apply yours and Marcins tweaks.

Please people take the time for this all, do it step by step, so you can experience it for yourself,
and like Peter said: "don't just follow the crowd".
Even Peter himself made that mistake (this will not happen again !), it was Peter who started this topic afterall,
and we should have listen to him, WAY back in december 2009.
Windows7 ? hmm ... maybe not !

Respect the fact that Nick and Marcin spended a lot of time on it, so they DO deserve PROPER feedback people.

There was someone that made a small program to do this automatically. Is there someone that can do it again?

 Happy

We will work on that too, if there are people with experience on this, please come forward.

We need to make .reg or .bat files to apply reg and os settings automaticly (maybe sound-card and xx settings too),
Also be patience with the vLite subject, we'll go to the bottum of this, but as you could imagine it will take time and lots of experimenting.

Hello ALL,

I just want to thank everybody on forum for working together (Marcin, Nick, Mani, Peter, Telstar and more)
I still have to read all posts again.

I know that many people will be eager to hear my findings about the NOS1.
As you could imagine i spend this week over 40-50 hours on the xx project.
I think i will come up with a very nice post this weekend, so stay tuned.
Please give me some time.

For now I only say NOS1 and XX are TOP NOTCH, I will eleborate this, wait for my post !

Peter, Ciska and Paul, you are TOP NOTCH people as well, but I think you'll already know that.

The xx project evolved so much this week, but only due to the fact of combined forces on forum.

I am proud to be a member on this forum, working together with so much smart people.

SO to all who made it happen this week:
