286  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: A superoir SQ of the NOS1 with 8x AP only! on: April 27, 2014, 01:50:05 pm
Hey Pedal glad you've given it a try too! It's been several weeks  since I changed to 8x and I've not felt like I wanted to go back to 16x. We will see. Regarding 24/192, are you saying that you generally upsample? For me HiRes always sounds best at its original sample rate of 96 or 192.

I'll give switch 5 up (with other settings described in Peter's post above) a try this afternoon. Had yesterday afternoon off and spent the time so pleasantly lost in the sound of music!

My impression is that the SQ of 16bit/44,1KHz recordings is smoother with a finer note/less overall harshness  (of the cymbals)  and a bass/kick drum  with more resonances/reverberations. The soundstage has more width.

Interesting. I've spent the last 3-4 weeks listening with 8x upsampling but didn't want to post about it until i was "sure" about my impressions. What prompted me to experiment with the upsampling was a listening session where my Phasure NOS 1 was compared to a Meitner MA-1. I've had this opportunity twice now in two different rooms and the first time the NOS-1 sounded better by a mile. The second time was with runs of 25ft interconnects, and the sound of the NOS-1 compared to the Meitner was a bit too polite and soft sounding, Though the NOS-1 sounded excellent the Meitner had a bit more pzazz or energy, bass was a bit tighter and louder. The meitner used a pre-amp and we tried the NOS-1 with and without the pre-amp. Though the NOS-1 sounded better without the pre, in both cases the Meitner had a bit more energy or sparkle. When i got home, I played around with settings trying to replicate the sound of the Meitner and found that the 8x oversampling instead of 16x added that bit of sparkle (similar to the Meitner) that provides, as Jochim described, more resonances/reverberations with a kick drum. Unlike Joachim, though, I'd say that 16x sounds a bit too smooth compared to 8x, vocals and solo violin  have slightly less body and presence than 8x. In this regard when I first tried 4x oversampling I thought it sounded best but over time it sounds a bit fatiguing. 8x seems a good compromise. Anyway, the guy with the Meitner is coming back in mid-may and we are going to give them one more listen in my room where the NOS-1 was clearly better the first time we compared them. So, for now, it seems that 8x sounds more pleasing than 16x. Would be interested in others impressions.

according to the website this is how songs get on the list:

"The week's most popular current songs across
all genres, ranked by radio airplay audience impressions as measured by Nielsen BDS, sales data as compiled by Nielsen SoundScan and streaming activity data from online music sources tracked by Nielsen BDS. Songs are defined as current if they are newly-released titles, or songs receiving widespread airplay and/or sales activity for the first time."

I haven't listened to the radio for music in years cause there's never anything "new" that I like. So I guess it is as bad as you say. However, my wife's daughter, Carsie Blanton, a musician, has introduced me to a whole world of unknown singer/songwriters out there that never get "radio play," but if they were born in the 60/70's they'd be stars. So it seems that the current radio play "system" is broken (in the US not enough competition).

Writing too fast. Happy I have two 3tb drives: one running W7 and the other running W8. Each was formatted with the Seagate DiscWizard utility and then I was able to load the OS's, which are able to see/use all 3 tb's respectively.

Not sure I understand your issue Paul. After using the utility and formatting in GTP I was able to load the os (both W7 & 8)on a 3 tb drive which recognized all 3 tb's with no partition. Hope that makes sense.

Yes, there's a link to a "DiscWizard" utility at the end of the article. It works for W8 though it only discusses W7.

Hey Paul, in the paperwork that comes with your 4tb HD, there should be a link to a Seagate utility that you need to download to format the drive for UEFI. Once you've run the utility you can load W8 and it will see all 4 tb's.I've done that now on two 3tb drives. Let me know if you can't find it cause I saved that utility somewhere.....I think.

It started happening about a week ago on W7. Though I haven't checked, I'm pretty sure there is no anti-virus running on the W7     partition. Am traveling right now so I'll post the log file next week. Thanks!

*If* it is so that now "recently" always some instance of XXHighEnd doesn't want to quit its tasks then something else is the matter (and I never heard of that so far).

I think this is something new. It happens with a fresh boot, play a track, hit Alt-X and the "XX is already running message appears."
298  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Speaker Wire on: March 21, 2014, 01:07:17 pm
I recently purchased some used Kimber Cable 8TC speaker wire from Ebay to compare with my AntiCables speaker wire. The 8TC is the equivalent of a 9 gauge wire and the AntiCables are 12 gauge. I was pretty amazed at how well the Anticables compared to the 8TC, the highs were as clear and smooth and the bass was as tight and natural sounding; however, the 8TC added a depth to my soundstage that has been a revelation. Where before I had a bit of congestion with very loud orchestral passages, I now have vivid front to back separation. Am very pleased with the purchase.
299  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Alt-X issue in Unattended on: March 21, 2014, 12:52:48 pm
Recently when I use Alt-X to bring up the GUI while a track is playing, I get the "XXHighend is already running" message instead of the GUI simply returning to the screen. If I then hit "cancell" and redo Alt-X the GUI returns, or I can just hit "Okay" to start a new instance of XXHighend and the GUI returns. No big deal but a bit annoying.
300  Ultimate Audio Playback / Playback Tweaks and Source related subjects / Re: EMI susceptibility of audio and USB clocks on: March 02, 2014, 10:12:36 pm
Hi,

I just want to update information above regards using a dexa clock to replace the 22.5 MHz audio clock of the NOS1. I have also copied the following text into the first post in this thread so that the comments are also in context of the original post.

I had the privilege of visiting Peter for a couple of days last week. Whilst at Peters we had the chance to listen the NOS standard 22.5mhz clock and the dexa 22.5mhz clock to get a feel for how they both sounded. In addition to this Peter used his FFT measurement equipment to measure the the audio band psu noise of the NOS clock and the dexa clock.

This all made for some interesting results which I need to update here in order to keep information current.

After listening to both dexa and the NOS standard 22.5mhz clocks, the NOS standard clock provides the best sound quality.

The audio band FFT traces of the power supplies to the dexa and NOS1 clock showed the NOS1's clock supply to be around 45db quieter than the dexas psu. This is not a direct indication of the clocks performance but it does show how the lengths to which Peter has gone to give the NOS1 clock the best environment to perform in.

In summary the NOS1 standard clock sounds better than the dexa used as an audio clock. Stick with the standard clock it works exceptionally well !

Cheers,

Nick.

Nick, I am so very happy that you were able to spend some time at Peter's with the"Dexa" mod, such commitment on everyone's part! Really an incredible community here.  Am also glad that I can stop wondering about how a non-DIY person could manage the "Dexa" upgrade.  Happy

Keep tinkering!
