You are right. I unticked "Do not Start playback" and I can now move the slider and play will begin where I set it.

Regarding Alt E, I'm in unattended and it remains unchanged; XX simply quits.
797  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Another Hotkey issue on: March 18, 2011, 11:05:41 am
I've put my cheap pc in my signature cause I realize that it may have something to do with some issues that I have; but I must say that generally speaking I do have glitchless playback here, though I must use mixed contiguous to use a higher SFS. Was listening to music yesterday from 3pm to 1 am and had gaps in playback once; when an HDCD was playing. I unticked "Decode HDCD" and all was fine thereafter.

I do notice though that since 9z-4-1, the ALT E command to pause a CD is now just like the ALT S command; XX completely quits. Conversely, and it seems they must be related, I cannot now slide the progress slider to a particular portion of a track and then hit ALT P. When I do, play always starts at the beginning of the track.

Before I was able to use ALT E to pause and resume play at that point. And I could put the slider to any portion of a track and play would begin there. It seems that stopping services resets everything to the beginning of a track.

These functions are nice when I'm trying to discern differences between Schemes and other XX settings, though I think I'm just going to be doing alot of listening and far less fiddling with settings for at least a month.  Happy

Everything Gerard said in his first post in this thread is just true for me too. In every way the NOS1 substantially improves my JKenny/ MSB Gold Link III combo. The whole time I waited for Peter's dac to arrive, a bit over two weeks to Philadelphia, I had this little voice worrying about "what if" the NOS1 would only be a small improvement. Damn those stupid worries! After listening to "Fragile" tonight, I hear bass in a very different way. There is such a clarity and punch to the bass, and it's so amazingly well ballanced with vocals and other instruments. All just plays together with this "authoritative correctness."

But when I first received the dac on Monday I sent Peter the following:
"Decided to put the trip off for a day and take a "sick" day at home. Sure am glad I did! Peter, out of the box the sound is unbelievable; I've had it on for an hour and a half. My wife sat on the couch and smiled. She loved it. (Thank God!) I think I now know what "without jitter" means or sounds like. For me , it has opened up the mid range of my system like never before. And the mid range is the last part to burn in?!?! Holy sh*t!"

Oh, and Gerard, Eva Cassidy is like a revelation.

Okay, gonna sit back now, burn in, and hear things improve.....Ha!

Thanks Peter.

Dac arrived yesterday. Suffice it to say for now that its unbelievable. Am headed on a busness trip till Thursday evening and am wondering if just leaving the dac/computor on is okay; is it preferable to have XX or some other playback software running?
802  Ultimate Audio Playback / Phasure NOS1 DAC / Break in tips? on: March 12, 2011, 03:05:02 pm
Having read that it takes a good month, 24/7, to break in the Phasure NOS1 is there anything that may be regarded as "best practice" for this time period? Just wondering cause rumor has it there's one over the pond now headed this way!

Anyone coming to this side of the pond in April might want to consider: http://www.axpona.com/

Wish I could go but work is a bit all consuming these days.
804  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Difference between Scheme 2 and 3? on: March 08, 2011, 01:58:03 pm
Since I switched to Special mode from adaptive, scheme 3 is a little too forward and harsh here. I prefer Schemes 1 and 2 more.
805  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: XXHighEnd Model 0.9z-4-1 on: March 08, 2011, 01:52:22 pm
I also find schemes 1 and 2 better than scheme 3 ever since I switched to special mode. Scheme 3 definately puts out that "too forward" sound here.
806  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / A few more thoughts on an unpleasant subject on: March 05, 2011, 09:39:43 pm
I tried to get this done before the WindowsX reinstatement thread disappeared but I failed. I was moved enough to finish it so here it is:

The reinstatement of WindowsX was just an amazing thread in this forum and I just cannot help adding my two cents: It is always surprising to me that people  become upset when Peter stops them from taking a direction that goes against what I presume to be the essential purpose of this forum: via feedback, to benefit (Peter and Us) from the development of two products: XXHighend and the Phasure NOS1 dac. While Peter has unleashed a project whose force and beauty arise, in part, out of the committment to the sharing of ideas and experiences with XXhighend, it is in the end Peter's project and no one else's. That this project has been intentionally set up to rely on our willingness to contribute and share, is a fact that Peter has amply acknowledged and thanked us for in numerous posts. Reliance on feedback, and the ability to use and manage it, is a testament to who Peter is.

So it strikes me as really very ironic that in this thread there was a public apology from Peter (he did, after all, reinstate WindowsX), while those who have crossed the line and have, intentionally or not, gone against the essential purpose of this project continue to remain silent (Josef) or publicly instruct Peter on how to apologize (WindowsX), or chalk Peter's behavior up to "Having a bad day!" (Marcin).

What the Fuck!

I know its bad form to call people out and name them but my purpose here is not to start a fight. I just want to be as specific and transparent as I can be. Josef and WindowsX  offered actual "alternative products" to XX, while Marcin offered extensive system tweaks that Peter warned were untested and not always the best. (I was one who didn't listen, applied some of those tweaks and completely crashed my system) Thus Peter asked that no one respond to Marcins last post of extensive tweaks. (One could go on and on here explaining all the reasonable and necesary reasons why Peter needed to slow Marcin down, but it's really not necesary to do that, is it?) Since that time, ego bruised, Marcin has had an "edge" to some of his posts, if he posts at all.

Although there are several reasons why these developments have been unpleasant to watch, the one that saddens the most is that Josef and Marcin  once made important contributions here (Sorry Windows X, with my rather limited understanding and your not being a user of XXHighend, I've never understood a thing you said.) There was a moment in this forum where the pace of collaborative thought was dizzying yet, from my seat, exhilarating . To now see anger and hurt feelings troubles the soul.

I am heartened though that Peter acknowledges and takes steps to correct his occasional overreaction to what amounts to the abuse of this forum. Like the reinstatement of WindowsX, I'm also heartened that one can still access information on JPlayer through this forum. I'll bet Marcin got his code too.

Extraordinary work Peter, you set a fine example. Thanks.
807  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Error Messages at Beginning of Tracks on: February 27, 2011, 04:25:42 pm
For the file shown below, I get the following error messages at the beginning of each track when the desktop disappears. The first message (2-27a) appears and when I close it the second message (2-27b) appears, the album art does not appear though I have "Show as Wallpaper" ticked. When the messages come up the music plays without interuption. So far, when the desktop disappears, I have only had these error messages occur with two albums. All other albums have played fine.

this is one of the things I didn't mention - although I implied something with changing the (digital) volume being faster even at the higher SFS settings - possibilities seem endless now. Or said differently : how to destroy this.
And again IOW ... HEADROOM.
Well, for something.

I never said it much in here, but one of the virtues of vinyl seems to be the headroom before things start sounding wrong. To me (as a personal observation without asking wives etc. etc.), it seems that this headroom now is there. It just feels like that.

Reading the above made me think of this:

Split file size and volume
« on: August 23, 2010, 01:32:53 pm » Quote Modify Remove

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ever since Marcin posted the reducing the split file size to the minimum produced very good sound for him, I've been experimenting with it as well. With vocals, Leonard Cohen, Dylan, Patty Griffin, Eva, Dianna,  etc., the "correct" setting changes for each singer depending on the volume level. Take a singer and turn the volume to a moderate level. Here, on my system, setting the split file size to 12 does sound very good, but, turn the volume up to very loud and everything sounds way too detailed and etched, like a too sharpened digital photo. Keeping the sound very loud, turn the split file size up to between 80 and 200 (depending on the vocalist) and it sounds very pleasing again, though it looses some detail it sounds very realistic.

Its interesting that reducing the size at loud volumes initially sounds "best" but it soon becomes fatiguing. In a way, the split file size acts like a master tone control: reducing it makes all ranges, low, mid and high,  sharper and more revealing, thus for moderate volume it sounds "best"; increasing it, at very high volumes, rounds all ranges off and makes them feel more pleasing. Give it a try........and let me know if I've lost my mind......

Now I'm not entirely sure of everything Peter means by "Headroom" but I think volume must have something to do with it. Back in the early days of 9z-2, I was pretty sure that most of the differences in SFS's I used for different recordings was due to the recording, so I advocated that the SFS "knob" be put on the face of the GUI so it could be quickly changed. It just didn't seem possible that it could be a set it and forget it setting.......boy was I wrong.

The amazing thing about 9z-4-1 is that using large SFS's the sweet spot of my volume control has  been significantly broadened, as a result I don't have to change the SFS depending on the recording; rather it is only with an adjustment of volume that I account for the differences in recordings. It seems that this has been made possible because all frequencies seem to have become more stable, present and smooth(??). Before, with 9z-2, as SFS was increased the music would flatten (unless you turned it up really loud!)

From my not at all technical perspective this is really a great achievment in XX, making using the program much simpler.
809  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / DEP settings: 9z-4-1 on: February 25, 2011, 02:16:19 pm

Peter,
you are right, I had DEP settings "Only essential Windows programs and Services".
Now I set it to "All  programs and Sercices". (Tip: include this in some kind of usermanual or Release Notes)
Furthermore, I turned the Pagefile back on (only on SSD C-drive, I disabled the rest).
As a result, My MaxSFS for MC has gone up from 116 to 184 !!

When I read the above I checked my DEP settings and changed it to "All Programs" from only "Essential Programs". Am pretty sure the default setting is "All Programs". Now my maximum MC SFS  changed from 165 to 200. However, my SC SFS went the other direction, from 20 to 2. Just an FYI.
