871  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: 9-Z3 on: December 14, 2010, 01:09:54 pm
Not sure if this is helpful given all the "Josef" changes that will be made in Z4, but I recently gave Z3 another try and my original impression of sfs.ini set to 11 or 21 remains the same, though 21 is better than 11: very clear 'thin" sound; very similar to Josefs 32 bit player. However sfs ini set to 00 is a much rounder sound and, it seems, that there is no difference, or hardly any, in changing the SFS. I would say after a day or so of listening that its the most pleasing sound I've gotten from xx. I have the SFS set to 12. I think I can now change my signature.

Josef: My system priority has programs selected, I see your pic has backround services selected. Which is preferable for jplay and/or xx?

Marcin: For me, on my system, the fuller sound of XX is more representative of what one hears live, especially with vocalists. For what it worth (not much I'm afraid) my daughters career has required a few hours of listening in clubs around the US east coast (where I'm often "helping" the sound guy in the room for "best" presentation of her voice or guitar, though I have no training in this area....just what sounds good to me  Happy ). I am always surprised at how similar the sound of XXHighend is to the sound I get at her shows.

Just my 2 cents.

Can't wait to hear Z4 cause I'm sure "things" will be incorporated as a result of the collaboration that continues to amaze  Happy.

I know I've done this before but what the heck: check her out here: carsieblanton.com.

Will give it a try, but I thought that the hiface was limited to a buffer size of 2048?.

Does anyone else find that japlay, though very crisp, clear, and beatiful sounding lacks the lower end "fullness" of XXkernel streaming. Its that fullness that makes xx kernel streaming sound so organic, especially with the lone female voice. My findings were confirmed with the wife test, the true litmus in my livingroom!

It works here with the hiface, the 32 bit latest version. I haven't tried the earlier versions. Had to get the right username, which took a couple of tries cause I assumed that my administrator designated username would be the correct one, but it wasn't.....Anyway I was surprised when it worked that it set the buffer size with the hiface to 1024:

The sound is very good "WASAPI sound" but it lacks the fullness of the lower mids and upper base that I get with XX kernel streaming. Is it being offered as an experiment for memory usage in xx or as an alternative to xx or both? Just wondering........

The only album I have is the one titled "Tommy Emmanual" and I love it. Just ordered "The Journey Continues" from Amazon. Thanks!

Agreed. So what's your favorite Tommy Emanuel album? Just wondering.....

One thing. I could only get the free download to play by loading the tracks with the explorer button in XX. Regular way of loading from embedded explorer wouldn't work.

Wonderful. Thanks Russ!
878  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Jkenny MK2 on: November 24, 2010, 03:47:12 am
For those of you, like myself, who will not be able to get your hands immediately on a Phasure NOS 1 you really ought to consider the Jkenny MK2 if you've been using either the Evo or the Hiface. I've had the Evo for about three weeks and have been very pleased with its sound, a real improvment over the stock hiface. The highs with the evo are crystal clear, without harshness. Today, though, the MK2 arrived and its really wonderful. Using a 15 db attenuator with a bnc/rca adapter, the sound is incredibly smooth which, to my uneducated ear, seems related to the mid range coming forward in a way that makes the sound more natural or organic.  In comparison, the Evo now has a more congested, "hifi" sound. Thankfully, I am still able to get a full refund on the EVO.

Though silly sounding, its always amazing how you don't hear stuff or know what you are missing, until you get to hear what you are missing!

So, we make no other changes and continue to save our nickels and dimes....... Wink

Ivo, when I recently purchased vista and installed it in my dual boot system, I did not install any anti virus software and turned off all such native stuff in vista cause it never sees the internet. I did get the "thirty day" message and found that you can register it by phone. Here's how: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/10/13/how-to-activate-windows-vista-by-phone-activation/
Its simple. You call and are asked to input you registration key; then you are given a registration number that you input on the computor and you are done....no more thirty day messages. Hope this helps.

Okay, okay I'll try to be both patient and "wise", though the latter, regrettably, may not be my style! Am looking forward to 9-z4  Happy

Like Ivo, I've had a heck of a time trying to get a bootable vlite 32 bit vista ultimate to boot. Spent all day last Thursday working on it without success. Really, given my level of computor knowledge, or lack thereof, I'm in over my head. I think I'll wait and see how things develope before I try again. Am wondering though if all the posts regarding this topic could be moved to this thread so it would all be in one place?

Appreciate the opinion, only wish the AES/EBU connection worked so I could use my ears to say, damn, that Flecko is right!

The spdif connection certainly sounds great wth the evo, much tighter and clearer than the hiface......gonna give jkenny mk2 a try too and keep the one that sounds best....  Happy

Ivo, don't know if there are other links but you definitely want to check this one: http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=1426.0

I have the day off tomorrow and am planning to create a vlite version also.

One advantage : it is mutually exclusive with an existing setting. Haha.
.

Hmmmm..... sounds like a final SFS solution?
