What material are you going to mount this beauty in?  I'd prefer your cardboard setup to metal.  Think of a nice thick piece of not very dense type of wood  (experiment with varnishes) with a nice thick acrylic top...

and a
12V car- or motorcylce battery
257  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Re: Can anyone help me with this distortion ? on: January 16, 2009, 06:11:39 am
Then maybe a redesign of the power supply, better rejection and filtering of the mains should help.
If we build or buy it we cannot ask all the neighbours to buy a new fridge...

On the internet there is another interesting DAC wich uses batterysupply. Some companys offer an ac-supply specially for this.
Like Paul Hynes in the UK. Maybe he knows some tricks for you?

I like the idea of using a battery supply feeding the dac.
I'm still fighting electrical stuff at my place; even though I've got the system running off a subpanel ran with decent sized copper, audio on one leg/computer & video on the other leg, all front end coming out of a ps audio powerplant, and have even shut off all other circuits but the amps in the house, I still get low level noise coming through the speakers... some days worse than others.

How about 12V car- or motorcylce battery?

"Do not combine the XXHighEnd.exe from the zip (right at the bottom) with any other XXEngine3.exe !!"

I don't understand what this means?  I usually unzip the latest version XXHE over a copy of my last version (in this case W5).  Does this message mean I should delete the xxengine3.exe in my old copy and then unzip W7 on top of my copy minus the deleted xxengine3.exe ...?  Why wouldn't it just replace it like it normally does... what am I missing here beside a brain.

wait maybe I figured it out.... are you saying there are people out there that would take the xxhighend.exe by itself out of the zip and apply it to an older version of XXHe? hmmm

edit
Well, it's all working great here.  Just unzipped over a copy of W5 like I said.  I'll gush more about the volume control later, but for me, it's a major improvement in this system where I've had to change 4 xover vol knobs for forever...
Now I can work at setting the balance once and for all and using XXHE as one vol control YEA

XXHighEnd
To infinity and beyond!!!
I'm just getting home from work and saw there is a new version ... and (imagine me crying tears of joy) smaller bit perfect volume control steps.  Wow peter, you really should get a patent for that; I'm sure a lot of math/work has gone into this and I don't know of anyone else/player able to herald this accomplishment.... everyone else just says,, "aww you won't hear the bits being taking away".  Nice design with the red/green indicators.  We should all be so happy that Peter doesn't treat us as idiots and tells us straight up when things are compromised or working the way they should.  Good job and many thank yous.  Hope to download/setup soon/later.

Thought I'd add this here.  Noticed on
Pretenders - The Singles
When using W5
song 10 is called "2000 Miles"
The track number doesn't show up.
2000 Miles
It shows up for all other tracks.
11-Show Me

I checked V7
When using V7
track number shows up:
10-2000 Miles

probably a cue file thing ...

Haven't looked yet at other songs that name begins with a number.
261  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Volume control w6 on: January 07, 2009, 08:57:16 am
ooo ooo I know I know, I thought of a feature request...
Could we have a right vol and left vol control to adjust balance, (with a chk box option to lock the sliders together; like on the fireface 800 mixer).  I know that as I've had to play with with 4 vol controls on the xover that I've come to adjust the balance of certain recordings.  I can lock in a soundstage better with just a tweak one way or another; If you truly get fine gradations, I think having the ability to independently adjust right channel and left channel would be nice.
262  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Problem on 09-w6 on: January 07, 2009, 08:31:19 am
EAC is pretty easy to learn to use... it's the only one I've ever used or trusted.  (well, except for a small time with plextools when I had a plextor drive)
263  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Volume control w6 on: January 06, 2009, 04:14:27 am
Ah, that's true. I forgot. Better shouldn't have mentioned it at all. Happy
This is a setting for your Mouse in the Configuration settings. Same as the number of lines which will browse in Explorer etc.

Edit : The scroll wheel comes handy when the resolution of the volume is much finer than now ... which I have been working on, but failed so far (without losses that is yes).

GoGoGo Peter! finer volume is needed hehe... Here's hoping  clapping  I guess I'm a little tired of changing 4 volume controls and getting the ratio right on my xover....in the closet next to the listening room heh

Just getting it for "native 16/44.1 files and with a 24 bits DAC" would be great for me atm.

I think I read once you were thinking of this option.  To copy the wav file to the HDD that XXHE is on (in my case the SSD) and then load it into memeory from there... Are you going to add that option to XXHE still? grazy

Happy  new year from the states.  Just coming back from a live reggae/rock concert... man, live hit you right in heart cage... happy new year all.  It was a little "overblown" bass, but maybe I need to kick my bass up a  bit.   HAPPY NEWYEAR to all.

Have you ever dreamed of running the audio completely off the electrical grid? I have, heh.  Hoping for solar power, wind power... discovering some fast running underground stream to tap into...
I've shut off everything in the house at the circuit breaker level except the subpanel that runs the music system.... still get noise from the power lines... and I have a psaudio power plant running the front end and the computer on opposite leg of the audio equipment in the sub panel.  hehe oh well, I don't think I have a 17 khz tone, but a bit of a hum that can grow inexplicably louder once in a great while... knock on wood haven't heard it for a long while.

Oh ya, make sure to get a screenshot of your wall paper funcion. With my decent scans, I set the wallpaper # to 725 and it looks decent and large.
268  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Pictures of XXHighEnd on: December 25, 2008, 10:23:38 pm
A suggestion
I think you need a prominent and permanent set of pics showing off XXHighEnd to newcomers.  We are all about Sound Quality here, but we forget that you've also put together a player with remarkable features.  Most all about SQ players are stripped down hardly any gui... I think some people may think that's all XXHE is ... and would be wrong.  Maybe make a permanent prominent area where people can first view what XXHE looks like (the hook).  Change pics as you change the player, but as it is, the library tab and other tabs are looking very nice and you should show that off to newcomers ... I think it should be the first thing they see when coming here... not walls of text.  Which leads to my next point, XXHE is very easy to set up.  Sure all Operating Systems can be tweaked for better, but setting up XXHE is very easy, much more so than other players ... no asio or figuring out what gui to use.

I'm not sure if this applies
Most all of my wav/cue files have dashes and spaces in the name
"Taproot - 2000 - Gift.wav"
and I don't have problems?
♫∞
I rip using Exact Audio Copy ... EAC.

Maybe some powercleaning here and there could help or not?

That very well could be. But the stupid thing is "we" applied the SSD for better sound. And the sound sure becomes different from it. The question is why and if it is really better.
If the sound doesn't change, I don't need it ... innocent

I don't beat my machine up like Peter does.

True true ... with me it is a rest for one side of the DAC powerplant ... Happy

Sorry, but with my shootout between the SSD and the HDD I had I would say it was the HDD that could use some power cleaning,,, it was in that very area I thought the SSD beat out the HDD ... I felt there was less "hash" in the music and that I hadn't stripped any music in doing so.  I was pretty thorough when I went back and forth that time, I'm pretty confident this time that the SSD was better.

ps
Can I get "crazy audiophile" tags like you too peter?  I think I've earned it.
