Well I did this the other day when still valid... but it says it is unregistered still.  I couldn't find an email to send it off to.... probably that is why; they maybe buried the email somewhere?  anyway, from what I read, the "free" registration did not include new versions.

Thanks for this.  anyway ... 1st post in this Epic thread!

Hi
I believe it is a Vista only feature.  If your dac is only 16/44.1 NOS, then you may not have a lot of room to play with the volume anyway...but maybe that just gets into SQ areas.

...phase...There's one thing I can tell you : an amount of jitter doesn't behave the same in the high frequencies as it does in the low frequencies (generally, when you have it right for the high frequencies it will be wrong for the low frequencies).
Happy

Whenever you throw out the word phase, take it back to thinking about different recordings and their phase differences...(ever wonder why audiophools have their phavorite recordings to show off their equipment ... it's not just recorded well, it also works well with their system phase-wise).  So, that's what I've found a bit.  There are times I've liked up toward 18, many times I find coming back to 14 sounds better, but now I'm trying out around the +4 area,,, I used to be able to go - with earlier versions, but the laptop can't cut it on these versions.... I hear some *analog like crackling* on some recordings at +4,,, (hmm maybe hearing into the recording better? juries out), I think the system starts to stress there.

more rambling thoughts later, but here's toward figuring out where all these q1 settings will take us, and their different sound presentations may be just that.
365  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Vista & Superfetch (Shut it down) on: July 21, 2008, 12:52:57 am
I haven't tweaked Vista much ... ( i think on my next install I might try to shut down as many services as possible for fun...), but, I did try shutting down Superfetch in Vista.  It seems to have greatly cut down on HDD activity.  System is sounding very good right now... but it has been, so i dunno.  But I'm amazed at how the HDD activity light is not blinking away like it use to.

366  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Re: Idiot alert - what are cue files on: July 06, 2008, 01:16:48 am
I didn't know how you got this info.  I thought if using single wav/cue files that you could pull info from that for numbers, artists name....
It's fine the way it is now with just song name.

The top should show Artist and Album Name. This is derived from the folder structure and the "intelligence" needed for that depends on the naming you applied. This is unrelated to the data being held in the cue file because not everybody works with cue files ... nea

That you like to have the track number shown is nothing more than logic for someone who doesn't apply the track number in the name of the track. Psychologically for you this goes extra wrong because you have the track numbers in the cue data.
Anyway, here too, some intelligence can be applied to work out the track number (this is easy) and show it when not already there in the track name (a tad more difficult because how the track number is formatted (and where) is up to "you" again, and it has to anticipate on all the variations possible).
But I will dig up some brains and try (I know, for cue files this is a piece of cake, but still it can be so that cue file tracks contain the track numer already, and you don't want to have them shown twice).

I have all .jpg in the same folder area as the wav & cue & txt files.

For my little laptop the scrolng became slower.  I dunno which background I like... the black has grown on me... but it does seem slower.  Just thought that would get better with a faster machine?  No errors as of yet.
370  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Re: Idiot alert - what are cue files on: July 04, 2008, 09:39:43 am
Aaahhh, hmm well... Give me a bit to think,,,, something is messed up and i think it depends on whether your cue file is reading individual song wavs or my EAC created single album wav file and cue...

For my style of files, at the top of the cover art I see... Artist - year - Album (ie. Wicked Tinkers - 2008 - Rant)  ... is this info derived from the folder structure or the file name?... anyway,
on the bottom I see a single song title that changes with each song. (ie. Swing Set; ...).  In the playlist of the player it also just shows the individual song.

I thought it would be nice to have the song order number) artist - song ... ie. 4) Wicked Tinkers - Swing Set
displayed on the bottom instead of just the song title.  keeping the artist with the song for when things are mixed up or in various.  did i make sense yet?

The anti-CTC formed a derival and is today celebrating its 5th day anniversary. Although her main objective is to get back the path data as how it was shown at before 0.9-v2 versions and which was abusively eliminated by PeterSt, she unanimously votes for the same ideas.

When the anit-CTC, thus far known under the name of aCTC, gets recognition by the U.S.A. administration, she will put an official complaint, but, she might need the votes from the CTC and therefore politely asks the CTC to join her and form the CTCaCTC which even might go for president when enough followers sign up.

ok ok we'll join! with our unwashed brothers...

but I get to hold the gavel.
372  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / CUE TEST CONSORTIUM Wish List on: July 02, 2008, 07:59:10 pm
We have all been mulling it over here and all though there have been many disagreements in this huge community.... The CUETEST Consortium* has finally nailed down a request for PeterST.

"Please show song number and artist info in Playlist area when using cue files; just like you already do for song titile"
eg.  1) artist - song1
2) artist - song2
...
There you have it,,, months and months of deliberation in the C.T.C and that's what we've come up with.... although we're still not sure if we should ask for 1) artist - album - song ... sigh hmm Now they're all arguing again,,, hmmm

...ps
there is one crazy gent still out there that wants a "cue reader" button on the player (under the info tab?)... a button that would pop up the cue file in the particular album loaded/playing and let you only read it....most of us here dismiss the idea, but he has been talking to everyone he meets here at CueTest about it and he has been developing a following..., we'll see.

373  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: Firewire connection on: June 27, 2008, 06:43:48 pm
let's give it another year to find out. I think we are about to have the tools for it ... whistle

[Aaarrrrrgggg] but I wanted to build something this summer [/Aaaarrrrggg]

hmmm  looking to at least get spdif out to dac to try 24/96, and more importantly to me use xxhe volume.  It would be great to be able to get rid of the analog crossover and use something like SOUNDLENSE (or wait for XXHE...); but, even if I build a new computer, I wonder how running software in the background will influence SQ... Seems like everything does with my little laptop
One moment I'm thinking about picking up a FFx00, the next moment I'm building a whole new computer and thinking about soundcards, ... too many choices awwwww...... I just want it to sound the bestest... is that too much to ask?

anyway, build something around that juli@ card ... maybe???

Hi Peter and All,

A compelling new FW interface product from the very professional Swiss brand WEISS:
http://www.weiss.ch/afi1/afi1.htm

This could well be a very serious contender to your famous RME FireFace 800 (same price range about 1300€).
However, your DAC must accept AES/EBU input (or optical ADAT; which is the rarest option; only for some Pro studio units).

Cheers

any idea of the cost??  can't seem to find out what the retail is

The one that looks intriguing to me is this one:

hehe You guys just aren't using the right medication...but ya, I'm a bit of a NIN fan...distortion and all.  His album just before this, Ghosts ... all instrumental... is interesting to me... cellos and all.

Anyway, the point is... I sure hope more groups follow his example and realize the benefits of releasing the master tapes quality to the public and skirting the record companies altogether, and make their money off their concert tours.  Unfortunately I'm still in 16/44.1 territory; I hope I can put something together this summer that will break that barrier though.
