526  Ultimate Audio Playback / Music Storage and convenient playback / I say NO to SSD for music playback. on: February 11, 2011, 05:22:20 pm
Everyone,

Today i made a fresh install of W7-SP1 on a HDD. So at the moment i have it on a SSD and a HDD. Really no way for me that i would like to go back to a SSD anymore. Since the latest version of XX there was to much of the highs. Some metal irritating sound.

After the first track it was obvious that the irritating sound is gone. Now i can even play SFS 40. With the SSD I had had to use SFS 1 to get rid of it a bit. The overall sound is much more relaxing IMO. In a few weeks i hope i can explain it a bit further but for now the new pc builders may think twice. Since a SSD is a bit expensive.

That where two expensive SSD'S that i bought aggressive I still can use one for the Galleries though.

EDIT: I have an SSD with Vista also and that to delivered to much in the upper region. So i really think it's the SSD that is causing it. (OCZ V2 and Intel)

What is the ambient temperature in the NOS1?

I just had the cover on for the whole day and thought to actually measure;

Temperature around the 40.000uF caps is 32 degrees (C); the further hottest spot I can find on any of the other (small) caps is 42 degrees (this is in between the second pair of heat sinks and those large caps). So, quite ok.
Btw, ambient (room) temperature is 22 degrees.

Peter

Thanx that is very nice!  good

528  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: 0.9z-4-0 on: February 03, 2011, 10:27:49 pm
Hi - I thought I would update my recent comments about z4 after a few days listening. I find 4 much clearer and precise than 3 and overall I can hear much more detail. Vocals are really much clearer. However the sound has a hardness to it that means I listen at a lower volume. I do not know if there is some inherent high frequency distortion or some such derived from the software or if extra detail is "pushing" my system into misbehaviour. Anyway I cannot go back to three but I it would be great to get rid of that hardness to the sound. I have tried changing settings but it does not get rid of the hard character of 4. Bit its OK at lower volume and the other improvements make it worthwhile.

All the best

And when you use SFS 1? Do that help?

It will play with KS engine 4 but only to Juli@ wave out...not SPDIF  scratching

Hi Hal9000,

Just a week ago i helped a friend with his new Juli@ soundcard. The problem looks a bit a like and if you read these topics maybe that wil help.

All the "metal" has gone, z4 is MUCH better than z3.  love this

Flecko,

Well what can i say!  Good job !

You are totally right!

Thanx!!  Happy

you just hear each instrument and every instrument is made of metal Wink.

There is a lot i like with the new Z4 SC version. Went back to Z3 and i miss the clarity. But i have the same going on like Flecko says. Its just a bit to much  and do not now yet how to get rid of it.

Really curious what Bert comes up with with his SSD/HDD test.

Oh, I thought I had told sufficiently enough about this ? (Release Notes and ToolTip).

Well you did but please it is so much information and all new that my head is a bit  wacko at the moment...

This all needs a bit time....

Playing your setting there is something real real different and good at the same time. Yesterday though after a while it started to irritate me a bit. But than it could be my mood from yesterday wich was not all the best.

But there a lot of air wich is totally new.. Like it!!

Something strange. I am still in adaptive mode for now. I find that I prefer straight contiguous mode over mixed contiguous as music seems to flow better, more lively and better clarity. However, suddenly I kept getting error message about memory allocation error 03, lower SFS, reboot or change mode. Currently, I am down to SFS 10 with straight contiguous mode. However, when I lower SFS, music also becomes leaner, seems to emphasize treble more. I like the slightly darker, richer sound in mixed contiguous mode with SFS 100 but like the pacing and music flow/detail of straight contiguous. I wonder what I would have to do to run bigger SFS in straight contiguous mode?

I receive that error only when i like to play with Ramisk.
538  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: XXHE large files problem on: January 16, 2011, 07:47:26 pm
ok iīve tested a music with 8 minutes and it takes about 8 to 10 seconds to play. then a played a mp3 with 70 minutes...
and about 50 seconds... apear the logo thak says the bit rate (in this case - 160 mp3) but.... after that a still donīt ear nothing...
is very strange...  first i though that was the demo version... but than i realised not.
than i tried a mp3 file with 32 minutes and it played. than i tried another with 37 minutes and does nīt played...
so i think i canīt play music with more than 30 minutes....
my config  is a asus n61 laptop>spdf optical>dac> amplified monitores

Hi

I nodiced that sometimes i have to push 2 time's on the play button when playing large mp3 file's. And indeed it take's long before playback starts...

Ok... scratching

one year  Shocked

What is the ambient temperature in the NOS1?

Gerard,

All is about the recharging capabilities and the speed at which that goes. When this drops, the capacitor just doesn't have enough "capacity" within the time frame needed.

I'll do it a bit by heart now and the figures will be wrongish, but it is to get the idea :

A capacitor often is rated for 60 degrees Celcius. This is a fairly normal temperature within electronic devices.
At 60 degrees the best caps (which are just in the NOS1) will last 10,000 hours. This seems much, but for a device of which it is advised to keep it On always (and without that advice we'd do that anyway, right ?) - it is not. Not at all, because it would be just over one year only. Now think something like when the (for the caps) ambient temperature is 20 degrees C lower, they will last 1 million hours.

Notice that a more normal (low quality cap) may be rated for 1000 hours only (60 C).
