I need to ask a stupid question regarding editing SFS.ini file ( 11, 21 etc). I have absolutely no idea how to edit that  I suppose I need a little remedial help on this. Thanks Hi, I also had a little problem finding that but you can find the .ini file in the folder of XX. Open that file and on the top change the 11 in 21 or something else. Thats the trick i guess  |

Can you mani please explain it again with some screenshots? Hi Gerard. Do you mean how to use the MS Interrupt-Affinity Policy Tool? If so, I'd be happy to do this when I'm back home this evening. It's pretty straight forward, and Nick's document helps a lot. Mani. For others who are thinking of doing this, Telstar's suggestion worked for me - "bcdedit.exe /set nx AlwaysOff” If you would like to do that and also this thing that Nick came up with. This seems superfuous, but is not; It will avoid copying the XX stuff to the RAMDisk again (maybe two times); no big deal, but setting those settings each time is not a nice thing.
Moral : first wait until the RAMDisk shows up automatically after a reboot (thus, maybe two), and when that works, copy in the XX data, set the settings, and finally check that box "Save Image on shutdown" and also save the Image at that point. This latter again is "necessary" because each change (like from the mentioned checkbox) is only dealt with *after* the reboot. So, just one step too late in fact.
Like Roy said : when it works, it keeps on working. Really a nice tool IMO.

What kind of problems have you encountered trying to install XX on your Vista partition? Just wondering cause I'm planning the same with my desktop. Boleary, Did you say somewhere (i don't now were) that you would explain how to shut off services? I use my pc for music only and would like to play around a bit with those. If it ends up in a new install from Vista so be it. i do not now if it is a lot off work but it would really be appreciated! (maybe a few screenshots)? |

If XX/Ramdisk sounds too laid back, you might want to lower your SFS by about a third. SFS changes are much more subtle, or they have less effect in Ramdisk, but, to my ears, its not (yet?) completely irrelevant. Overall, on my system, Ramdisk is as significant an improvement as the switch from wasapi to kernel streaming.

So, last night did setup RAMDISK on my W7. Did compare both - XX from HDD and XX from RAMDISK. Well, the latter is a bit aggressive, smoother, space is a bit more. Overall, it is good for me so far. Maybe will not go Vista/RAMDISK, because I think I might experience to much laid back sounding as Peter described. Will see.

A question, a thought and a reply, not necessarily in that order. We'll see.
Peter, does XX copy only the currently playing mp3, flac, etc. file (or part there of) to the local directory/disk or does it copy the whole play list. If the former, would it not be an advantage for the purposes of the ramdisk to incorporate a function that allows for the copy of the whole playlist; so that all xx functions (or as many as possible) during a particular play session would take place in ram (possibly the originating disk could slumber during...).
RE saving the disk image. It is not necessary to set "save the disk image" at shutdown and it might not always be advantageous. I for instance prefer that my ramdisk be the same as when I set it up, and to change only when I make setup changes. To do this I can save it manually. Your ramdisk should not be lost, and will load automatically until you actually "stop it." Because ramdisk space is limited I don't want to clutter it up with anything unnecessary that might be saved at shutdown.

I might be writing complete nonsense now...
Is it possible to partition ramdisk with 2 separate cluster sizes?
Then the small files and coverart can sit in the 4k cluster sized partition.

The sound It should be possible to create 2 ramdisks, but i think that the dataram software that we are using doesnt support 2 ramdisks at the same time. (i still cant see the letter unit, which must be "O" btw  ) I did install two yesterday. As it started i nodiced it was the wrong one. Then downloaded the one i like and activated that one to. I thought that i closed the previous wrong one but it did not. The sound was terrible but that also could be of the two time´s 1500mb setting. I am not sure  |

Ha ! Afterall some news here ... It was just (ignorantly ) occurring to me that lately I can predict when actual sound will start. How ? well, you can guess ... A faint tick just in advance. Hahaha. But then (less ignorant) I thought "wait ... what OS is Arvind running on ..." and yes. Vista. Like I do now. So ... most probably still not solved, but at least I have a tick now, and somehow it must be related to Vista (and not to the 24 bit output ?). Well, just to let you know. At this moment I can't find anything further anyway, and maybe it is not the same as you have at all. So I'd rather wait until 0.9z-3 and you tell me that it is solved. The tick is very faint, and from the left channel ... Peter Had that in Vista too. I think that i have said that one day? But installing Vista again so see if it comes up again. Can easily switch between W7 and Vista now. |

I'm very happy that my work is appreciated I keep tweaking OS, XXHE settings, because sth is always wrong and I can't sleep at night, haha. To be honest, the reason behind this is probably the same with everyone - to achieve the best SQ. Now I must admint I enjoy music like I've never have before, but it's not just because of RAMdisk only. I applied series of tweaks and those that Nick http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=1398.msg13228#msg13228 are amazing, I'm speechless. This is the new dimension of sound. I could only imagine what would happen if I turned network services off, etc... but I don't want another OS just for XXHE playback, at least not now. SFS still matters, unfortunatelly, and I haven't found optimum for me yet. Greets, Marcin There was someone that made a small program to do this automatically. Is there someone that can do it again? |
