I stand corrected by the omnipotent Wikipedia. I guess there once was a mister Schuyl since they tend to be named after persons (discoverer? Proprietor?).

After my above post this morning I went for my 6 mile jog along the Shuylkill (American Indian name--no one really knows how to say it) River. As I ran, it occurred to me that I really shouldn't be offering your equipment for others to borrow! By your reply I see you didn't take offence.  Thanks! Happy

Actually, Schuylkill, and (as Peter may recognize) Dutch, meaning "hidden" or "skulking" creek.  Pronounced (around here, I don't know about the Netherlands) as "SKOOL-kill."  Or sometimes "SKOOL-kull."

Check, but no creek is involved by the word itself. In current spelling it is 'schuilkel': a synonym for a shelter.

It is crazy but I just do not remember it sounding this good before. There is nothing I can think of that I have done that would have improved the sound - I just removed the BNC sockets and put the RCA's back in.

The effect of the BNC cable notwithstanding, I had kind of the same experience. That is SQ seems to improve over time, almost suddenly. I did not change anything to my system, but I am sure it sounded like never-heard-before good on my system yesterday night.

Its an encrypted connection to a server.

That server can be your home internet connected server or a server in another country.
Your internet traffic over the VPN will use a "local" IP address. This means that you can use a United States IP address with surfing over a US VPN service. Since many services check on the origin of the IP range for access (services that are legally bound to nations) you can with this US VPN present yourself as a "US resident". IP-wise that is of course but enough to pass the test and enjoy stuff that is not available in your country yet.

Apparently TIDAL only checks the IP address origin on sign up.

The internet is full of these paid VPN services.

Hi,

I do not consider myself a vinyl guy but I confess guilty of listening to LPs and enjoying it.

The urge to play records seems to come and go. When everything goes, there is fantastic flow and momentum in the music, real easy on the mind. I'm not much bothered by the surface noise ticks, dynamic compression etc etc it music first. This is so hard to achieve with digital. The biggest drawback is that it is only 30 minutes of bliss and then you have to leave your chair. I also love the aplomb it has especially on modest hifi systems. It also works wonders on mono recordings.

From a holistic viewpoint I think this natural gap in the music might be key to the LP experience. After each half you have to decide what to do: spin it again, flip it or get another disk. The ritual of selecting, sliding the disk out, get the right side up, brush clean it etc is more conscious and makes you value the listening experience more. At some stage the inconvenient and unpractical side of this all does move me in the direction of digital again until the LP tide returns.

Now I stil have to agree with Peter's statements on high end vinyl rigs and show experiences. Apparently manufacturers, reviewers and customers have decided that the LP playback sound should have "no character of its own" or be "neutral", a thing that digital does much much much much better. They've brought it to a place where it is my opinion that the essence of the medium is lost. Not that it sounds bad, but I've never been lusting for this gear after a demo knowing that my digital system at home does all it tries to achieve a 100x better.

Horses for courses thus and enjoying both for what they do now. I'm certainly not finished with my digital so we'll see what more can be extracted from the medium...

Hi,

Hi Brian, thanks for the link. I still have some doubts because some days ago I put a post asking about the Neutrik adapters and transformers and it is not clear if they will work, the problem is that the RCA connector has an impedance of 75 Ohm, same as the coaxial cable, so with an adapter is ok, but the XLR connector is 110 Ohm and I´m not sure if it needs an adapter or a impedance transformer.

Impedance transformer: http://www.neutrik.com/en/accessories/aes-ebu-impedance-transformers/

Adapter: http://www.neutrik.com/en/accessories/circular-adapters/na2fbnc

I appreciate some help on this regard because I´d really would like to test the BNC cable.

These are AES/EBU to SPDIF (75 ohm) impedance transformers naturally intended for the digital RF signal and as such completely unsuitable for audio frequencies. AF transformers are on their turn quite unusefull for RF and proper RF termination for that matter.

You could to the one or two adapter trick at the end of the BNC cable, but it is spanning the horse behind the carriage as we say here. The whole idea of transmitting a signal over two wires in opposite polarity is to minimise the interference with outside magnetic fields (that will be common to both signals). If you use only one conductor of the pair this is all lost. Anyway if you only have a balanced input on the amp there's no other way.
The only way to make the BNC cable work as intended (no rf reflections) in this case you will have to terminate the line with its rated impedance before or in the adapterplug. The plugs and circuitry thereafter have never been designed for rf so this is a lost cause anyway (if it matters at all).

Hmm, this isn't very promising.

No news on my 1m order, should have been 3-5 days, but possibly they meant 3-5 weeks.

I am going to order a couple of loose USB A and B connectors and solder them on the stock cable. Hopefully this will make better contact.

I tried this on the Mac. After a lot of crashes I managed to get music in one channel.

Hey Coen, thanks !
Is that undistorted in itself ?

Peter

That was with the old driver/old OS and music was undistorted.

It seems that people can't get it to work with the Mac version of HQPlayer. And I can't test it.

I tried this on the Mac. After a lot of crashes I managed to get music in one channel. I tried a number of audio "software patch-panel" routings to no success. NOS1 768 switch made no difference.

I allready PMd Peter,

I did not try the 2.6.0 but the 2.7.0.
Installation run very fast. After the reboot the NOS1 was recognized and music playing within the minute!

I've let it play while messing around and noticed that there are tics with certain tracks with A+ and interruptions with a "krrr" sound associated with cursormovement. This is on battery mode. In "slow" filtermode (less cpu intensive), extreme priority and/or all other applications closed the ticks seem to remain. Not saying this IS about the driver but it could be.

But otherwise I would have suggested exactly like you say now (see quote). *If* there's a GPU in there !

Confusing terminology, but the i5-2500k I use has an onboard (modest) GPU aka an IGP. When no videocard installed the BIOS defaults to the IGP for video. Powerconsumtion wise this setup is an advantage, but it didn't sound like that.

Haha!

Now we're trading places: lost and frustrated developers instead of users!
Is there an OS where we can meet? Is the Linux environment even harder to manage or does it not have enough users?

Thanks anyway for the effort!

148  Ultimate Audio Playback / Phasure NOS1 DAC / Os-x yosemite driver? on: October 22, 2014, 09:10:18 am
FYI:

I moved forward to Yosemite. Not entirely unexpected the NOS1 driver doesn't work anymore. I've re-installed the current driver in several ways but the NOS1 is not recognized.

Is the new driver Yosemite-proof?

Removing the PCI-e Videocard was a bad idea even when there was no monitor on the output. The sound became feeble and powerless and atmosphere was lost.

scratching

Mind you I have an i5. My take is that the GPU on the CPU got activated again by the removal of the videocard with detrimental effects on SQ.

But now I'm a bit concerned that with the NOS1a, setting up an RDC with a laptop to control XX might cause SQ issues. Setting up such a connection is something I'm very much looking forward to. Maybe there is a trade off with an RDC connection which then lets one disconnect mouse, keyboard and monitor? Just wondering.

This was my theory, but I only tested it on WIN8 and its no secret that I don't like that at all. Anyway disabling the KVM did not do very much, but the RDC was a nice improvement in the right direction, but certainly not enough to leave WIN7  Wink!

Removing the PCI-e Videocard was a bad idea even when there was no monitor on the output. The sound became feeble and powerless and atmosphere was lost.

Back on WIN7 disabling the Ethernet again (no RDC) was an important step in the journey back to excellent sound again.

So YMMV.
I'd say save the convenience improvements for another day.
