646  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Mixed memory error? on: March 28, 2012, 09:12:40 pm
Hi Peter,

I was skipping to a next track and at a sudden a error message 'mixed memory error, lower sfs?' appeared. This is a bit strange since I am running in 'straight contiguous' mode.

Or is it not?

647  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Problem with 'Minimize OS' on: March 27, 2012, 09:58:37 am
Hi Mowa,

Just for the record, only two programs have been 'installed' on my maiden sound only pc: the phasure nos1 driver and xxhigh end.

I think the problem occurred just like Peter explained: something like an  unfinished rebootsequence for the sp1 update.

I am not bothered by too much services. Minimise os killed most services, unattended does the rest.

648  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Can't get into 'Minimize OS' on: March 25, 2012, 10:24:46 pm
I keep being hunted with min OS troubles, hopefully they are now over...

I upgraded my system to sp1 from plain vanilla (all 1k updates) and made a restore point. I booted several times into 'max OS' and decided to go to min OS.

Problems arose: it wouldn't go into min OS. After the automatic reboot all services and procesess are still there. A restore to the sp1 situation did not make a difference.

Just gave the 3 normal reboots a shot and.... It worked as intended!

Time for a new restorepoint!

Thanks,
Regards,
Coen

I also had the crackling. I don't think onboard or pci card usb3 matters, they are seperate chips anyway (only ivy bridge has native usb3), the chipsmanufacturers may differ though. When having the pcie card in the 16x gpu port there was significant cracking caused by the cpu. Error counters in the driver panel went bazerk. Still the cracking is visible in the usb and fifo error counters.

I also had cracking during play, but that seems to be fixed by increasing the minimum clock% of the cpu (in power management).

No definitive comment on sq yet.

Hi Peter,

About Minimize OS... It does not seem to work anymore. I switched from Minimize OS to normal OS, then switched back to Minimize OS, but I am quite sure it is not working (too many processes and services still running). I switched back and forth, but no change...

Uh... Help ? Wink

Alain

I encountered the same problem and reinstalled my os to fix it. Peter recommended strongly to make a restore point of the working (non minimised) fresh os install (with updated drivers). Then you don't have to install it again when you encounter this problem another time.

Maybe you can restore allready to a previous os version that worked.

I was thinking that the maximum benefit (assuming hardware and bus speed contribute as well as software) would be for folks who fit a PCIe USB card to older motherboards with only USB 2 support but access to PCIe buses. This is the case for my PC.

I have a usb3 mobo with etron pcie usb3 chip that does not work as expected. Another reason to get a PCIe card.

My impression is that USB3 is beneficial, but I am still in the process of getting my system working as it should, applying lots of changes to the setup (os). Up untill now I have not felt the need to remove it.

What kind of USB3 cabel did You use? Do You use an Adapter to connect to the NOS DAC USB? Can't find a Shop in the Netherlands for an adapter (USB3 A to USB2 B) ?

I bought a USB3 'elongation cable' with a male USB-A on one end and female USB-A on the other. The female USB-A fits in any USB2 converter I had at home (ie standard A-B in most USB 'toolkits'). Most shops carry USB2 converters, for instance Mycom sells a generic converter with all micro and macro USB2 options (all male-to-male!).

There is at sfs 440!

I'm there!!!

 yahoo

It just took a couple of reboots to be fast enough to prevent the gremlins peeping into the virgin memory.

I could detect no big memory users besides XXEngine3 in the task manager process screen (selected the 'allocated memory' column). According to my graphics utility the videodriver allocated a whopping 64Mbit for all graphics purposes. I had to be possible.

Now I still don't think my minimised OS is booting like it should.... unsure

Peter,

I sent you a PM with some screen dumps. I would expect less services in a minimised OS but I could be wrong.

Lowering the graphics memory to 32Mbit+2 did nothing for the SFS.

Scanning all corners of the OS I stumbled upon a not working intel graphics driver (in error state...). I updated the driver to the newest version and this is part of the solution because now I can play up to an SFS  of 220!

Still 220 to go...

When this is not about the 2500 and maybe the graphics part of it now using normal ram (???), it should be about additional processes loaded at startup (remember, Minimized OS Mode).

But what about those graphics ? ...

Peter

Graphics was downsized to 400Mhz, but restoring that makes no difference. The graphics does use some memory: 64mbit+2Mb, there is only one step down (32 Mbit+2Mb) in the bios...

I will make a screenshot of services and processess tonight. Maybe something is wrong with my "minimised" setup. I noticed the genuine logo of windows now appears in the system config screen, where it used to be unavailable.

Peter,

The BIOS is mostly left untouched (=default values). I switched off the USB3 and Ethernet peripherals and set HPET timer to 64 bits mode. Maybe I disabled S.M.A.R.T..

In the OS I switched to the maximum performance profile (all fancy windows stuff unticked).

Default the memory is at 1333.

I think I am running a 64 bit system with 8Gigs of memory (see attatchment).

An SFS of 500 (not more) can normally be reached with any W7 64 bit system and 8GB of memory *and* in Minimized OS mode.
It is unrelated to the amount of upsampling.

Hi Peter and Alain,

Thanks for the replies.

Peter, "normally" seem not to apply on my side. Is this about the paging file? I've read about to immediately start with playing after a reboot, but this makes no difference here....

?

Then I replaced the original 1 x 2GB memory module with 2 x 4GB and then increased the SFS in XXHIGHEND from 50 to 440...
[/quote]

I am flabbergasted, to 400  Shocked?????!!!!

With 2x4mb i have not been able to play sfs beyond 177.

Even running xx (play) five seconds after the windows screen appeared never got me more than a 'lower sfs' error. With 4x4mb obviously no problem to get to 430 and beyond.

What's the secret here???

Today I hopped into a PC store (they do still exist!) and got myself a nice oem western digital usb3 pcie card which has the NEC chip on board.

Installing was a breeze and amazingly music appeared when the nos1 was plugged into an usb3 port! After playing some music I saw in the mobo manual that the i5 (lga1155) has a native pcie bus (for the gpu) and replaced the usb3 card to the connected pcie16x slot to give this a shot.

This last move gave a different type of sound, but more importantly with now and then some cracks. In the driver panel the usb and fifo errorcounters stepped up in the same pace. Not surprisingly these cracks coincided with a sfs driver cycle in which the cpu is loaded at a peak.
Moving the card back to the chipset pcie bus, no more errors appeared. One wonders what effects a graphics card in this place might have on the interaction with the cpu, but that is another topic Happy!

Anyway, I immediately liked the fresh and open presentation dispite a slight electronicness that accompanies a lot of new components. Let's give the mobo and card a little time to get used to eachother and observe again.

Thanks again for the encouragement,

Regards, Coen
