Ok,

This problem isn't solved really, but I found some changes that made it work ( at least for some undetermined time).

The first is cpu appointment scheme 2. I don't paticularly like the sound of this, this got me searching further.
The second is memory to mixed. This goes quite well, but cant hold my attention. (gee i'm critical  Wink).

The third is working right now with the best sq i ever had. Settings according to the profile, however with the gigabyte cpu/fan utility running. I noticed before that app scheme 3 runs more stable or even at all with this program started... scratching

Unfortunately this does not work unhappy.

I am not connected to any network so I shut off all relevant security.

Autohotkeys also behave strange. Alt-p, alt-p works, however in unattended Alt-S brings up windows and shuts off XX. Alt-X doesn't seem to do a thing in unattended.

768  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Unattended won't play Special mode... on: March 30, 2011, 03:33:30 pm
Hi,

Since the basics seem to work consistently, Im up for the next challenge!

I've been playing music with special mode in an attended setting up till now. With the settings in my signature, this works perfectly. However when playing (ticking) unattended the music becomes unlistanable. It is fragmented like having a to low buffer setting. I'm allready at a max for that to play special mode attended.

The boxes services off are both ticked (no networking either). It takes about a minute to start.

I would have expected unattended to be less resource demanding and therefore more capable of playing in special mode. Obviously I am wrong Happy!

Any tips to get this sorted out?

UAC has been off all the time. I even checked this in the registry early in the process.

Adding the right to 'administrator' didn't work no matter what I did. When I checked the C:\ policies, the role was called administrators; why not try that for a change. This hunch did the trick, ntrichts accepted this command.

Something like this might even work for XP...

p.s. I can play SC now with a max SFS of 12.

Thanks for the replies,

Glad to report it is working now after a some persisitence!!!

I used a little trick to enforce the lock pages privilege for the administrator role. I stumbled upon a tool that is part of the win2003 toolkit: ntrights.exe. With this tool placed in the windows\system32\ directory I ran it form the command prompt:> Ntrights +r SeLockMemoryPrivilege  -u Administrators (this command is case sensitive).

The clue with my win 7 home edition turned out to be the final s in administrators. After the reboot XX was started by 'run as administrator' and in place of the doomed error message music flowed out of my speakers Shocked.

Hope it still works after the next boot  Happy!

note: I switched HT off in the Bios, so I don't think that is related.

I just seem not to be able to let this topic go.

For the record, what I found associated to a service:

Quote
SeLockMemoryPrivilege
SeLockMemoryPrivilege gives service privilege to lock pages in memory.

Allows a process to keep data in physical memory, which prevents the system from paging the data to virtual memory on disk. Assigning this privilege can result in significant degradation of system performance.

Default setting: Not assigned. Local System (or System) has the privilege inherently.

So somehow XX has to set this for the services that are involved in the SC/MC memory mgnt thing. Where does the '... reboot' message originate from and how can I check if the privilege has been set at the proper services?

Just trying to get the system working,

Unfortunately a 'lock pages in memory' is a user right according to windows: 'User Rights security settings are not registry keys'

I found some ambiguous information about this topic for HEdition and HPremium. Some suggest that disabeliong UAC will enable this for the user, some say it isnt possible at all. And I found the associated privilege above (which is set on a servicelevel) which should be set for some reason.

I find this searching a little bizarre and timeconsuming for a layman like me, I'd rather have XX play as intended on my (virgin !) windows install. I ask myself what did booleary in the OS do get passed the message and play MC??

So either the desired lock pages function is possible for the crippled W7 versions and XX is a nag not allowing it to me or it can't be done on any other version than win7 ultimate. Please gray this out for me in the next version and save me some time!

At this point I see no advantage in Win7 (HP) SP1 yet. My XP version worked perfectly on the other mobo, for shure I am going for a new XP install on the new SATA drive and gain some impression of the new system sound character.

Meanwhile I will skip the posts of users getting eargasms of SC and MC Wink.

Thanks for the replies.

After elaborate searching i discovered that i run home premium which does not allow for group settings and as such does not support the solution of the link (secpol.msc or gpedit.msc). I went all the way down into the registry to get to the bottom of this. The RequiredPrivileges key contains the SELockMemoryPrivilege, however i could not find a corresponding key. I guess i didn't go deep enough.

Any tips from here or is everything set as intended?

Hi,

Need some help.

My new (modest and experimental) system is running WIN7 SP1 HP x32. After the heroic effort to get this up and running, I was in for some exiting XX memory allocation adventures. Unfortunately something does not allow for that. The 'priviliges have been set.. reboot...not start now' message keeps appearing

I've been booting like a madman without any result. Also SFS sizes of 1 do not provide for any relief. I've been plowing through the site for information, but I've not been able to find -for me- usable or understandable clues...

What am I doing wrong????? unhappy

Current settings:
09-z-4-1
buffer: 4096
Engine:4, Special mode
Attended (no autohotkey installed yet) and as such unfortunaltely no fancy service stopping
Timeres: 15mS
core scheme: 3 (intel d525)
SFS: 220
Mixed only
Q1 @ 26 (4096)

System has 4Gig of DDR3 (@866), HT off, a Cantatis (24/192) card & diver and a pretty fast IDE HDD.
No Win7 tweaks yet. (only one: for convenience I lowered UAC).

This setting works, but I am not satisfied with SQ as is. I see no reason why SC or MC wouldn't work. Do you?

thanks, Coen
775  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Best new version for XP? on: February 24, 2011, 11:00:25 am
Hi FZman,

I am a XP dynosaur. Not only that, but I also (still) use a 833Mhz PIII (MSI mobo). I've no experience with XX on Vista or W7, alltough I have a W7 disc and licence catching dust somewere.

To me the 09-4-1 is the best 09 version so far. I've been tweaking the OS by shutting off services, registry tweaks and the like as suggested by members on this forum and the C2MP website. 08 versions worked better at first, with a fuller, fatter sound, but failed to involve me into the music. You will have to play with buffers , timeres, Q and so on to optimise the sound to your liking. Everything matters.

Since I've just begun listening to 09-4-1, it allready has a wonderfoll flow in the music. All instruments are very well seperated and have excellent dynamics. The low end is not very pronounced, yet very precise. I personally don't mind this. It seems that this is typical for the 09 versions.

Generally XP is not regarded as a competent OS for XX compared to Vita or W7.  There is nothing holding you back to try it. I would even opt to make a dual boot XP/W7 on your system so you can compare with W7.

776  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / XP: XXHighEnd Model 0.9z-4-1 on: February 23, 2011, 01:37:15 pm
Hi,

I briefly tried the latest version with the same settings as I used for 4-0 (removed RAMDISK) and I can confirm that this is the best version so far. The biggest difference is that the uncomfortable hardness of 4-0 is gone and traded places for a tonally richer, smoother and much better defined sound. The time sensation of the musical flow is the best I experienced yet. Dispite the many improvements not affecting XP, the end result is definitely a big step forward on my system.

Now let's see what prolonged listening and additional tweaking will bring!

Continuing my findings on XP, I have found upping the Q1 setting (adaptive) improves SQ without sacrificing the well appreciated timing. With this knowledge I went back to RAMDISC and enjoy a very good sound with perfect timing at the moment. Though some technical aspects could be better, I find it very engaging with excellent clarity (purity?) and dynamics. You can almost drown in female voices Happy!

Like Peter said the position of the cursor does make quite a difference. Never noticed this before, since it is allways on the XX window. When the cursor is on the outside, the sound looses focus (much more fluffy) and a lot of the special magic is lost. Very important to keep in mind where you leave it when optimising XX!

Though the relevancy may be low on this forum, my settings for v4 are at this stage:
-VSuiteRamdisc, adaptive, 512 buffer, attended, Timeres = 4msec, mixed, garbage collect, services off, SFS=20,Q1=6, cursor on XX (!), music and OS on SCSI HDD

(note, not a complaint: special mode does not work, mixed contiguous does not work, unattended sounds flat as a pancake, have to make a bigger RAMdisc for temporarily storing music)

778  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: 0.9z-4-0 on XP on: January 24, 2011, 09:35:18 am
My first impressions on my XP machine match posts above. There is an unmatched clarity in z4, yet silibants and the like (is rock guitars) really have an unpleasant harshness. I ameliorated tis by lowering the timer to 2ms; this acts like increasing contrast on photos. The slight loss in clarity is a worthwile payoff. Yet it still is a little too lean form my taste, voices just lack warmth.

Other stuf that helped sq is moving from RAMdisc to the regular SCSI HD. It was surpising that on the RAMdisch I had to increase Q1 to 2 to get tick free playback (adaptive mode), while on the HD Q1 played without problems. The only memory setting that works is 'mixed'. I can boot as long as I like, but mixed cont.. refuses to play. But that is another topic...

There is one thing I like to mention about v4 that I think is very right. That is that it seemed to play slower, like every note and breath making more sense. I reverted back to v3 and v2 a few times in a few settings, and it was immediately apparent that v4 did not speed up and 'disorganise' the music. Since the sofware nor the soundcard do anything different it must be the superior definition of leading edges that define the timing of the music.

There is still a lot of settings to explore. Maybe I can keep the (near) perfect timing and add some lower harmonics to the sound .

This is what I was afraid of: total transparancy backfireing, laying bare all the good and all the bad. For many a recording, a tiny little cosmetics makes our listening experience exctatic, the naked truth might leave us only desillusioned. All we need now is a good visagist who can prescribe just the right dosis for our needs....

So far XX has done a terriffic job in satisfying my hedonic quest for an intenser repoduced-music-experience without having a totally transparent reproduction chain! I'm very curious where this quest into the digital unknown may take us.

Keep up the good work,

Interesting!

The paralell with audio is that I beleive the foveon technology to be potentially superior to CFA (no AA filter, 3 layer tech). In its SD14/15 implementation the result can be very pleasing but is not allways accurate. Engeneers have perfected the three layer technology for the upcoming SD1. Sample pictures have been stunning, both accurate and beautifull. This is probably the equivalent of XX and NOS1 in digital playback!
