136  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Normal Phase & Inverse Phase And PA +/- on: September 26, 2012, 01:15:13 pm

Officially the both should be anti-poles. So, Absolute Phase = Plus goes along with Phase Alignment = Minus. And, Absolute Phase = Minus (= Inverted) goes along with Phase Alignment = Plus.

With Z7-3 I could play all the four combinations without problem. But now I can't do it: playing non invert phase with PA plus ends with a fading distorted sound and a loud crack after a couple of minutes.

I've been using an aplication named ulteven. I don't remember where I got it but it works fine for me. After every XXHE new version installation and when you minimize OS the activation message pops up. It doesn't happen inmediatly but after a couple of days. Then I fire the  program and the message disappears.

Hello Peter,

I asked you for a visual feature to remind the best PA settings for a particular folder but  now I think  it's a nonsense because it's  simpler to change the folder icon with another one easy to detect  in the left XXHE root panel and that's it. I totally agree that the other solution has to be too complicated and it would create confusion in the long term.

Probably I am off topic  but I think this post can be included here. Before the z7 version I used to identify the disc folders with a symbol "&" when the music sounded better with phase invert. This was for time save. Here we have a popular adage I'll try to translate : "We are spending the wine in tastings" (similar in other countries for sure). The wine here is time, and  time is gold.

Now things are getting more complex. Even that classification is no valid anymore because the phase behaviour seems to be different. So I am going to identify the folders again with another symbols depending of which PA settings sound better. Although this is very tedious I think It's worth the effort.

Peter, you are going to kill me to ask for that, but it would be nice to implement some kind of visual feature
like the color code for the different music formats in order to remember the best PA settings for each folder.

Hi Peter,

IŽll check later if it depends of PA being active or not ( I think yes ) but for sure in the previous version ( 9z 7-0 ) there were no noise with PA active in unattended mode ( I kept the Prodigy panel active to control the volume ). But I must say that I never used the XXHE volume control before because I was afraid of the presumed noise. With this version I felt more confident to try it and is totally silent. Only in unattended mode there are little ticks and delay but I think is as it should be. So maybe is time to forget the Prodigy panel and that's it.

No more plops at sttoping. After trying different settings with Z7-3  finally I could do it: SFS 4 Q1 30 Q1x 4. These are very good news because getting up to down the volume slider in the Prodigy panel before every stop/end was quite annoying.
 Good job !
But at the same time I have notice something weird: moving that volume slider when XXHE is playing produces a noise like if it was an age-worn potentiometer. I have noticed too that that kind of VU meters in the Prodigy panel doesnŽt show the real levels anymore  as they are always at maximum while playing. wacko
Some Prodigy's users out there with the same issues?

Best regards

Hi Peter,
with Phase Alignment plops at stopping are still there ( and quite loud indeed ) with that settings (Device buffer 1024 SFS 60, Q1 30, Q1x 40) no

Hi Peter,
Sorry for the delay. At SFS 60 and device buffer 1024 I can go as far as Q1 30 and Q1factor 40 without problems. So 1024x30x40=1.228.800... I think

Sorry Peter,
I didn't understand you well. I think your are asking for the maximum settings before some error message appears.
With 1024( maximun for Prodigy HD2 ), Q1 14 and Q factor 9 appears the following message:
" Because  the product of Device Buffer Size Q1 level and Q1-Factor. is higher than 122880, possibly only one track will play in Attended Mode. Continue?"

When I try in unattended mode the message is as follow:
"Your SFS is too low to allow Unattended Playback. The equation is that 4128768 to be smaller than 2000000"

After that, I have to set the SFS at 6 to play. Before it was at 2.

I hope this is the information you request.

Best regards,

Maxi

Hello Peter,
the maximum device buffer in Prodigy panel is 1024 and currently Q1 is 14 and Q1 factor is 4.
Without PA active I've never had problems and whith PA active the only issue is the plop at stopping. I've never tried to change the volume in XX when running because I am sure there will be a noise.

Hello,
with the new phase alignment feature we all are enjoying a new dimension in SQ : a full bodied and rich sound with an unbelievable clarity. But at the same time some of us are suffering plops when the music stops and this is a bite like an anticlimax. In my case this is worsened because I need to keep the attenuation level at -9 to get enough volume headroom.( BTW Peter, I don't know if it is technically possible, but if PA could engage at -6 it would be wonderful ).
But let's get to the point! If you down the volume slider to minimum in the Prodigy panel before the music stops the noise is almost non-existent.
It's a no ideal compromise solution but I think it's better than nothing.

Hi you all,
I've spent the last few days trying different settings and once I've found the more suitable for me and despite the problems associated with a small device buffer and a lack of gain in my system, the only thing I can say is...WOW.
When Peter started to talk about the new version I placed the silliest post I have ever writen: I said " drool
Well, my expectations have more than fulfilled. Although my finances are a little bit struggled rigth now, this is the best investment in HiFi I've ever did.

At this moment I fell the necessity of take a break of A-B tests, wife tests (how patient she is), blind tests, etc. All of them with little pieces of well known music. Now it's time to a different behaviour and listen to new musics and/or rediscover the old ones but enjoying again the  whole piece of work: a symphony, an opera, a jazz/rock recording, whatever it is ( it doesn't matter I am omnivorous).
So thank you, Peter and thank you all with your contributions to the forum. I wish I can return the favor sometime.

Joachim and all,

I appreciate all your efforts of measuring and putting up the results, but I don't think this is of much real use. So, the one puts up this, the other measures that, but the only thing which may come from it is that people may read 'less danger' while for themselves the danger is there just the same. Thus, it is not allowed to listen to others; instead you must measure and check yourself and decide ONLY based on that. Therefore putting up results here challenges for mistakes at others. And these mistakes can be expensive ...

Peter

Be careful with excursions stop. I went yesterday too far searching for a combination in order to avoid those plops and I was totally frightened when I got a loud noise and suddenly failed the sound from the left speaker.
Fortunately all returned to normal operation after a while. scare
The amplifier protection circuitry had come into operation Shocked heat
Said that sure I'm going to fall into the same reckless mistake  Smack !

Hi Gerard,
I think you need to down the volume slider to -9 to engage it.

Ok! I see.  swoon The core speed is the Bus speed x multiplier.
My bus speed is a lot higher than yours: 275 Mhz vs. 95 Mhz. Obviously I am not an expert in this stuff. blush2
