Hi, Stefano!
Nice to see you've notice the same kind of improvement in the sound. It's seems that we have reach the same spot in different ways.
But I have a doubt, What were your core frequency before the change? I've notice that is higher that one specified in the CPU: 3,89 vs 3,40. Maybe I am wrong but I thing it is overclocked. If so, you must check your temperatures with RealTemp or something like that.
Another difference with my settings is the multiplier: yours is ¡x40! and mine x7,5. I think I'm getting lost wacko

Hi all,
Checked again with DPC and XXHighend running in attended mode. There are several peaks when the music starts to play and then zero.    scratching

Peter,

Yes, the 100us peaks  in measure are before the underclocking. After that, when I fire a program like XXhighend there is a peak of 1us as much. But apart from that remains at zero all the way.
Howewer (I am obviously in the normal PC boot session) I'll check it again when reboot  to XXhighend session.

Thanks
Maxi

Hi, Peter!
The latency drops instantaneously when I push the setFSB button and the change in frequency takes effect. The latency checker was only a visual constatation of what I have noticed before in the sound. I haven't use the DPLatency for a long time too and I am not sure about the connection with the underclocking, but the improving of the sound is clear to me.

Thanks
Maxi

Booleary said:

Last night I remembered the above exchange from earlier in this thread. I went into the ASUS bios and, in the Ai Tweaker (overclocking) section I played around with the memory frequency settings. I've always used the EZ Automatic overclocking function of the bios and have wondered why it automatically set the memory frequency to 1373 MHz when I have GSkill-1600, CL9-9-9-24. Anyway I set the Memory frequency to 1648, 1373, and 1098 and gave each a listen. There was a very significant change in sound for the better the lower the frequency. There is a 824 Mhz setting I've yet to try, but it seemed that the sound became so delicate and smooth at 1098 that it I really need to listen "here" for a while before changing this setting again.

Just an FYI regarding things I don't understand but which my button pushing nature and ears regard as worthwhile!

I can confirm this. Lowering the FSB ( underclocking ) improves the sound. More airy, more open, more all. pleasantry
I couldn't change the frequency in the BIOS because mine hasn't this option  avalaible, so I had to change it via software. The only one that worked for me was SetFSB. You need to find your MOBO clock generator in the list and get the FSB, then lower it.
Two drawbacks in my case (or not) :
- I can´t go beyond 275 Mhz from initial 333 Mhz. (1.330 Mhz to 1.100 Mhz). But the sound is so good that I am satisfied with that.
- You have to adjust it every time you reboot the PC. This can be an advantage for people, like me, with two diferent boots, one for normal use of the PC and other for XXHighend.

You can see the effect in the image. The latency readings falls to almost zero. So thank you very much for the advice thankyou

Ehh... well, the text is the icon itself. I wanted to say I was wondering what kind of improvement could be and what a great expectation I had. I obviously did not clearly express it. Tomatoes !

The thread of this, my experience is that before the last XX version there were some albums that theoretically had to sound good but in practice  sounded bright and harsh. Well, now are among the best sounding. It seems to me that there are some "special" recordings  that only sound good under certain conditions but in those conditions they sound really good.
PS. I have not learned English suddenly. This is a google translation. blush2

160  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Challenging hiend cd player/transport result on: December 11, 2010, 11:04:51 am
This is a very interesting question from a theoretical point of view. But it seems to me like a byzantine argument. Like Gods talking about their issues.
Let´s go dawn to earth and focus on the ugly main problem: MONEY.
My experience with hifi over the years is that you pay more and more money for less and less difference. And this at best ( so may times dissapointed ). Of course, even when my system sounded OK.,  I always knew that out there were better sounding systems (most of them). But I knew also that I did not have the possibility to get them.
And then came Peter with the XXHighend (sounds biblical). And this broke the rules (Commandments): with a ridiculous investment you got and unbelievable improvement.
Furthermore, if you have not a wealthy budget to get a super high end DAC, you have many options avalaible. This is my case and I had to build my own DAC and my system never sounded so good by far. Of course you always are looking for improvements but not at that prices please. That is why I am so grateful to Peter (and all of you guys for those ideas in the forum).
Probably I am off topic but I felt the need to say it.

161  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Re: 16/44.1 vs. 24/176.4 on: August 17, 2010, 08:26:31 pm
So am I ...

But I already feel the need to say that might it be so that people thought "hey nice, let's download some hires" ... there are other sites for that. So if that is the case, notice you took away the download facility for others with more real intentions and I already feel the urge to track down who the other gang is. So if you see your name popup outside your own posts, you know what the origin is.

But not yet !  Happy Happy
Hello,
First of all I have to admit that my intention when I downloaded the archives was only to make a comparison between them and my own vinyl recordings just to confirm how good all of them are for me.
I don´t make vinyl recordings very often because is a tedious job,  the record has to be in good conditions and then you have to cut the archive and generate a cue. My opinions at this respect are not relevant because I have not the so called "golden ears". I have a syntetic ears instead an analytical ones.  I like it or I don´t. I am so simple. Furthermore my Dac doesn't admit 176,4 so I can't compare to 16/44.1
Well, said that I must confess I feel sorry about the inconvenience caused to the forum and to Mani in particular whose question was very clear. But honestly I didn´t expect the number of downloads were so conclusive.
To amend this I have the intention of make a recording at 16/44,1 ( as I use to do ) and at 24/96 (maximun admited on my DAC) but as I have explained above, don't expect very clear conclusions.

162  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: 09-y8 on: March 15, 2010, 04:10:34 pm
Hello everybody!
In my tube based system 09-y8 in adaptative mode is more detailed but no less warm than special.
In any case either of the two is a major improvement.
Due to particular conditions I have to use headphones more than I'd like to do. And there is a clear sympton to me: before the tube mods of my DAC ( this summer  www.lampizator ) and mainly the discover of XXHE ( this autumn ) I hardly could hear a CD without a heavy sense of fatigue at the end ( apparently it sounded OK. but after a half of hour or so ...)   heat very exhausting
Well, yesterday I could hear a entire opera ( 3 CD's in a row ) and even so I wanted to listen more  love this
Furthermore, the low level detail made unnecessary increase the volume to hear more and this is very healthy for my ears. very happy
To conclude, Peter, thank you very much for make me believe again in digital after many, many years of bitter decepcions. thankyou

163  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: 9y--504 DacMagic USB no sound on: February 08, 2010, 04:03:25 pm
No, my OS is XP, not Vista. I get sound with 0.9y4 and previous versions, using Engine 1 or Engine 2.
"Dac Needs" is enforced (greyed) to the the option "DAC is 16 bits 44,1khz" (I know the DacMagic USB only allows 44.1-48khz and 16 bits).
With 0.9y5 I do have the option to choose, and I choose "DAC is 16 bits 44,1khz".

I was wondering, may be the problem is related to the name of the device (USB)...? With 0.9y4 I choose "C-Media USB Headphone Set" (in English) and it works. But with 0.9y5 the USB option I am given is "KS: Dispositivo de audio USB >> #global" (in Spanish). I don´t know if this has any relevance.

Hello! I had the same problem: the program seemed to play ( time slider running ) but there were no sound trough the DACMagic. The Q1 was at 0 as I use to play with SPDIF. Moving up the Q1 slider to 10, adjusting the Dac settings to 44.1 16 bit and , of course, without upsampling , the DACMagic began to sing. Then set again the Q1 slider to 0 and all is OK.(¿?). Too soon to judge the SQ differences  anyway.
