301  Ultimate Audio Playback / Playback Tweaks and Source related subjects / Re: Confirmed : PC Damping on: January 08, 2015, 02:17:43 pm

First we need to "think" is that the jitter the vibration and everything implies (including that from the listening room, the PC now assumed to be in there which is the case for most of us) is high enough to change the sound for whatever further reason.

-------------------------

Bring your PC and DAC down to the basement and you achieved nothing.

Hi,

with less acoustic vibrations (from the listening room) you get
less jitter and
the SQ improves from both units located in the basement
(PC + DAC)

302  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Program For A RAM Disc on: January 04, 2015, 02:19:33 am
Hi,

if somebody is interested see:

http://www.romexsoftware.com/en-us/primo-ramdisk/features.html

I'm using the Prof. Edition for $ 49,90 without any problems since years.

The plus of this program is, that the last setting of XXH will be copied as a backup to the HD with every shut down of the PC.

303  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: HELP!!! - I've screwed things up with IMDisk on: January 03, 2015, 04:43:51 pm

So, it seems that I've locked out most of my memory and my PC is now totally unresponsive irrespective of what I do.

Hi Mani,

there are not many possibilities left.
My proposals/route:

A) disconnect the PC from the power line for appr. 10 sec.
B) have a look into the BIOS for the RAM to ensure ..... .
C) proceed with booting and see what's going on.
D) If nothing helps, W8 has to be installed again.

kind regards

Joachim

304  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Re: YFS USB cable tour on: December 22, 2014, 02:02:02 pm
Hi,

lowered the (driver) USB Buffer size from 4ms (since a week) to 8ms (back to the previous setting on the laptop)  and there are improvements (using Blaxius) with

A) $1 USB cable - a better 3D image
B) YFS cable - more "sounds"

Joachim

Edit: Everything sounds normal again with the YFS
305  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Re: YFS USB cable tour on: December 21, 2014, 10:05:43 pm
So here an official report from someone who unofficially got hold of the YFS ...
Skip if you want to remain objective ...

Stupid stuff !!
Peter

Hi,
now I do have problems!

A)
- Peters  impressions about the YFS cable in conjunction with the Blaxius can be confirmed.
- The disadvantage of the $1 UBS cable on my system is, the depth of the soundstage is not present.  A 2D image only, with the YFS a 3D soundstage is there (and nice voices), but  .... see Peters comment.

B)
- I exchanged the Blaxius with the “old” RG 223 and played with the YFS cable. The SQ is similar to A) with a $1 UBS cable, but with a 3D soundstage and a slight harshness in the voices.
- Replay with the “old” RG 223 and the $1 UBS cable. The 3D soundstage is gone and a slight harshness in the voices**is present** too.

At present the best compromise in my system is the YFS USB cable with the RG 223.

The “expedition” for the best USB cable with the Blaxius goes on.

P.S. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a lot of amazing music listening sessions.
306  Ultimate Audio Playback / Playback Tweaks and Source related subjects / Re: Mobo main clock replacement... on: December 13, 2014, 04:08:47 pm

Thought a pic of the PC might be fun. Poor thing has its guts all over but the SOUND haha

Best,

Nick.

Bit off topic, but seeing the guts of my PC is standard here. Putting the PS and HD outside the case on vibration damping footers provided a nice boost to SQ:

YOU ARE ALL  grazy grazy grazy grazy( in a positive sense very happy)

Btw, what is your net speed at this moment ? I mean, how it shows in TaskManager ?

Where in the taskManager is the speed to be found. Can't find it.

Stanley

HI,

have a look under "Performance" and then scroll to the bottom where you see "Ethernet"

And those who were there when the floating on water experiment happened : do remember that this was all about eliminating the influence from BOTH floor and sound through air. Quite complex matter.

Hi Peter,

great writing!! good

Vibrations: What about the trafos inside the NOS1?

309  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: A new PC for XXHighEnd... on: December 10, 2014, 03:06:36 pm

Still e.g. a laptop with the normal CPU frequency (say 10 times higher) may use 30% of CPU and it takes ages to load a track in the mean time.
It just can't be compared ...

The main point since **NOS1a** is, what PC configuration produces the best SQ, and everything else (components) follows this judgement.

A) PC system with an internal PS
or
B) PC system with an external**linear** PS

Hi Joachim,

No strange performance related experiences with the laptop?
I guess a lot of system optimizations are not possible. Ok these might be less relevant SQ wise in a LPSU/battery situation but stops, hiccups etc are an annoyance too.

The HDplex is for the laptop I assume...**correct**

regards, Coen

Hi Coen,

The XXH settings I'm using are "weird", 8x AP only, no XTweaks and replay in "Attended" mode only. This settings do not favour the SQ from the angle of the hardware, but there is nothing strange during the replay, no ticks, nothing, a clean sound only.

The laptop is not as fast as ............. , but the loading speed of the tracks it is quite accepable for me, even with 192KHz/24 bit files.
I just tried to play tracks in "Unattended" but this mode doesn't work, so for this situation the CPU needs more power (and RAM).

What I expect is, that the external PS favours the SQ, and therefore  "low demanding power" components are essential. Such a PC should work when reading Peters comment here: http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=2937.msg31238#msg31238

The Intel Core i7-4790K processor (or Xeon E3-1241 v3 or Michaels Xeon type) should meet the requirement, and 16Gb RAM is a must.

We have to wait for Michaels report about his PC assembly. (hopefully before Christmas) Wink

Hi,

From my experience with” battery powered” frontend units/components this concept with the external PS (from CA and http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=3045.msg32944#msg32944 ) will enhance the SQ compared to our present “high powered”  PC configuration.

The SQ with my “under performing”  laptop (with an external switching  PS)  is the best  I ever had.  For a test I will order the” HDPlex Linear Power Supply” (< € 300,00 ex Hamburg).

Have to say I prefer battery power on its own with my notebook. Struggle with any Switch mode supply for sound it has a bright, hardness that is not easy on the ear.

Hi Robert,

you are right! good

Seeing there was talk that the USB cable Made a difference unlike before I went out and bought the Synergistic Galileo LE USB cable.

Hi,

this cable is quite expensive. Did you compare this with other cables?

I am using XT tweaks. I've lowered SFS to 1, everytime I lower the SFS it sounds better but alas my laptop runs out of energy to go much lower.

Robert

Hi Robert,

will try a battery mode during the day. I don't know if the XTweaks results for Time stabiity (not stable) and Time Performance Index (not the best) will favour the SQ. I will see (hear).

Thanx for your hint.
